Sideout still has a registered trademark for "King of the Beach." The original trademark was officially granted in 1989, and renewed in 2011. The trademark is for goods and services related to clothing and apparel. A Delaware corporation with Steve Ascher as owner also has a trademark for King of the Beach related to PROMOTING SPORTS EVENTS, NAMELY, BEACH VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENTS, FOR OTHERS. This was originally granted in 1999 and renewed in 2010. Other trademarks/service marks related to volleyballs, volleyball equipment and ski equipment have expired. There is an existing service mark for King of the Beach for a bar/restaurant in Florida. A search of the US Patent and Trademark Office is the most reliable source for information: tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=searchss&state=4808:6j2qm7.1.1(enter king of the beach in the search field to obtain a complete history) Ascher also holds trademarks for "Queen of the Beach" for apparel and volleyball nets and equipment. Fonoi also has a live trademark for Queen of the Beach for apparel and for "sport camp services". There must be some sort of specific distinction between Ascher's and Fonoi's trademarks since the same trademark is not usually given to two different applicants. The AVP has an abandoned trademark for Queen of the Beach for "The name of a Professional Volleyball Tournament all promotion, advertising, merchandise, and filming of said event."

I would love to see something like this. My thought would be to take the top 7 pairs (mens and womens), then have a fan vote to determine the final two players regardless of partner. 16 TOTAL PLAYERS MENS AND WOMENS TOURNAMENTS Round 1 1. Seed each pair and put pairs into the same pool, this way each pair would have to compete against each other for two of the three matches. Have the winner of each pool advance to a championship pool. Round 2 2. Whoever has the best record in the championship pool wins the title "King/Queen of the Beach" and the tiebreaker would be one set to 15.
In terms of TV, my suggestion would to show the highlights of the first two matches of each championship pool, then show the final match from the championship pool live on NBC in the regular slot.

Eric Fonoimoana ran a QOTB for high school/college players this past summer in Hermosa. I think there was a King's tourney as well.

I loved these things. Went to four of them, 1997-99 in Vegas one somewhere else. I even have a $5 KOB chip from the Hard Rock and a really sexist tee from one of them. I loved them, especially the novelty of the format. It was most fun to see hardened left-siders like Karch and Hovland have to decide who was playing on the right. Hated sweltering in the 105 degree heat, but took breaks in the casino. I missed the big payoff on Fonoi at ridiculous odds, but I did get something like 10 or 12-1 on Swatik the year he won. I'm with VBJim: I'd buy my plane ticket tomorrow, but now it would have to be on Allegiant!

One of the best events I ever went to was the King of the Beach that Adam Johnson won, maybe 1994 or 95. Karch had won everything to that point.
The chance to see players completely out of context is so much fun. Enemies playing together (Stokie/Steffes) old partners reunited (Sinjin/Karch) Big/big and little/little (Nick and Todd) etc.
Id love to see this again

Well, she has played in them in the past. She won Las Vegas "Goddess of the Beach" in 2006, took second in 2007. Looks like the last time the AVP did it in LV was 2009, when Jen Kessy and Phil Dalhausser were the winners. It would be nice if she graced the sand volleyball world with her presence at such a event. Does she realize she would be a huge draw? Time to move on from the Walsh Boycott of Chicago. Whether she was right or wrong was so 2016 and it's now a new year. Chicago 2016 turned out just fine without her. Just as this sport will continue long after she retires. Seems as though she as well as Sun has moved on from it. Lessons learned all the way around I would assume.
