We clean up in Beach, indoors our men do nothing, and our women come up short of a medal.....all in all, a disappointing indoor effort!

I think Kerri and Misty will win gold and Elaine and Holly will win the silver, but I don't think the men will win any medals. Indoors, I think the men will have a respectable finish, while the women will take at least bronze.

Whay is the status of Misty's injury? Is it now past the point of no return in terms of a sub if Hermosa happens again?

Roll the dice. It's basically a crapshoot.
RPS to 25 reeks.

Whay is the status of Misty's injury? Is it now past the point of no return in terms of a sub if Hermosa happens again? Huge interview today in the Long Beach Press-Telegram with Misty May. She says that she is 100% now, and that the injury was totally blown out of proportion and was nothing like the one that she experienced 4 years ago in Australia(shoulder) or the abdominal problem of a couple of years ago. She and Keri apparently practiced hard all last week and they fully expect to win the gold.......my money's on them! I saw her last Tuesday night at the Pyramid, when she came in to talk to Brian's VB Camp, took Q & A for about 20 minutes and then stayed after and signed autographs for another 45 minutes.....she is an unbelievably modest person, whom these kids just went nuts over!

Do it college-style to 30. THAT will make a difference! oH i just killed my own idea with my own eye roll! It'll give you a better idea which team is better. It won't remove luck from the equation, but it will minimize it. You can't play to 25 RPS at this level. It's like playing 3/4 of a basketball game, 6 innings, etc. IMHO.

The effect is bigger as teams get closer to each other, but its not as big as you might think. Using just random numbers, a team that wins 55% of the points will win about 91% of the time or so (based on a simulation of about 500 matches) in games to 30. In games to 25, it is about 90%. Not a big difference. When I go to 52.5%, going to 30 the better team wins 77% of the time, but only 72% of the time in games to 25. But 52.5% is pretty close, on the whole. Unless you think teams at the olympics are almost perfectly equal, it doesn't get much tighter than this. So it might make a difference of 5% overall. OTOH, depending on how you look at it, you might also say that when going to 25, it is 20% more likely to be an upset, which makes it sound a lot more significant (even at 55%, an upset is 10% more likely)

Oh, I hope and pray that she's being genuine about the 100%. I'd love to see them whale on everyone. Huge interview today in the Long Beach Press-Telegram with Misty May. Or meters. Seriously, I just don't think 6-5 in real points scored proves much of anything...

Do it college-style to 30. THAT will make a difference! Yes, but playing to 30 points is more BORING than playing to 25. At the last AVCA Convention, one of the coaches during a panel discussion mentioned "...the long, slow death march to 30." At the next college match that you attend, watch the audience occasionally. Watch them lose interest in the match at around 17 points. Just watch them. They are talking amongst themselves until 25-26 points. Let's just face it; rally scoring super sucks and nothing can be done to improve it.

Women's beach: May & Walsh gold Men's beach: nada for the USA this time
Women's indoor: USA gets to the semi-final at least (what the hell, they win gold) Men's indoor: Scrape out of pool-play, lose quarter-final

All I'm saying is don't run a 60-yard dash to find the fastest 100-yard runner. But I just told you, it doesn't make that big of a difference. When teams are really close, it might change the chances by 5 - 10%, but they have to be really close for that to happen. The variation in play and even ability is larger than the difference between 25 and 30. It's not a big issue.

Yes, but playing to 30 points is more BORING than playing to 25. Depends on the match. For a close match, taking it to 30 continues the excitement. It's the non-close matches that are the "death march." OTOH, a mercy rule would be an easy solution. A 15 point lead at 20 (not too common), or a 10 point lead at 25 or later. Cut the game at 26 -16 if that's the score. It addresses one of the more valid criticisms of RPS, that it prolongs blowouts compared to SOS to 15 (no one wants to watch a SOS game of 23 - 2, which happens these days)
