Lotsa gambling references. Setter from UNLV? Would that be a big deal? Alexis Patterson Already not listed on the 2017 UNLV roster. Your sleuthing skills are better than mine--haha! I just noticed that Patterson is not listed on the UNLV 2017 roster.

So, the guy named doubletrojan is complaining about hyperbole? Nope. Wasn't even thinking of that. Just wasn't sure who the VT world would consider big time. I was just making a joke. Doubletrojan = double entendre. She's probably still only the third or fourth best setter in the Big West, but it solves any setting questions for the season.

Even if she is the 3rd best setter in the BW that could still mean she is a top notch setter since 2 of them are playing for various USA teams this summer.
She was first team all conference in the MWC, set her team to a win in the NCAA tournament over Utah and was a decorated high school player both indoors and on the beach. That is success at every level and she will do the same at LBSU.

Um Taylor nelson hit 0.17, o.45 blocks, o.47 kps, 11.5 aps... arguably the premier setter in a one bid league Patterson hit 2.67, o.67 blocks, 1 kps 10.75 aps in a 3 bid league Not saying patterson is better But also would not relegste her to '4th' so easily, plus she s a lefty Gives long beach an entire new dynamic going in to the sesson as long beach was facing a significant possibililty a of very steep learning curve with their other 2 incoming setters As to poly, nelsons really subpar non-assist numbers last year beg the question what/how crosson is using nelson effectively for such a talented all around player at the setter position

Everyone was shocked at the three bids and complained about unlv. The knocking off of Utah shut everyone up and Patterson had a lot to do with that.

Transfers way down this year in numbers (per this thread). Anyone know the cause? Power 5 four year guarantee in play for players that are now rising juniors. Could some of these kids that normally would transfer for a continued schollie, now staying put even though they won't play. Just riding out the guaranteed schollie? For every action there is a reaction...so what effect might this have on the coaches recruiting going forward? How does this effect c o a c h e s trying to use the usually lucrative transfer market? Any other reasons for drop in transfers or am I just reading tea leaves that aren't there? Power 5 four year guarantee in play for players that are now rising juniors. Is this true? When did this go into effect?

I see Zuri Smith has transferred again this time from West Virginia to Florida Atlantic.
Mimi Marion is also listed on their roster, transferred from NC State.

Are we sure transfers are down significantly? By how many?
I think the one thing is that we've seen a lot of major coaching changes NOT lead to transfers (Stanford/Oregon/Illinois/Louisville/both Virginias). Usually power 5 coaching changes would shuffle the roster more.

When did this go into effect? January 2015. It would include rising Juniors (it may exempt if signed Nov 2014...I'd have to review the exact details). But yes, but it only applies to Scholarship athletes that are freshman. There are some exceptions and ways around it but not many as this was a pledge by the Power 5 that came out of the NCAA joint committee that included athlete representation in 2014. I'm just curious if this has affected how coaches recruit or how they offer scholarships? And how they handle kids that haven't worked out but aren't interested in transferring? Are they allowed to just minimally participate and still be guaranteed the scholarship. I think the power 5 rules now say "yes". That's got to be a pain in the neck for a coach and obviously would affect behavior going forward (i.e. Recruiting). www.wralsportsfan.com/power-5-schools-vote-in-favor-of-cost-of-attendance-guaranteed-scholarships-/14365214/Ironically, the student athletes on the committee thought it was a bad idea to guarantee scholarships for the exact reasons I mention.

I think the one thing is that we've seen a lot of major coaching changes NOT lead to transfers (Stanford/Oregon/Illinois/Louisville/both Virginias). Usually power 5 coaching changes would shuffle the roster more. My DD is attending one of the above schools that had a coaching change this year. I have to give her a ton of credit because she made her decision based ON THE SCHOOL and her major - and NOT the coach. Don't get me wrong, she liked the prior coaching staff a lot and loves the new coaching staff even more. So I guess in this case, she benefited from the coaching change. But ultimately she recognized that her future isn't based off of volleyball. Volleyball is just allowing her to start her future in a better position - playing a sport she loves and getting a college degree from an amazing school with no debt. IMO if more kids and parents waited to make an informed decision and not just an emotional one, we could see less transfers. My daughter waited to make her decision till her Junior year. Yes, she lost quite a few offers by waiting, but the offers she received once she had matured and polished her game were significantly better and worth the wait. I think all sides (player, parents, coaches) want it to work like this but it usually doesn't because of the things that corrupt all our decisions (fear and greed). In the case of volleyball it centers around the player's progression. Coaches recruit early kids that they think will continue to progress. Parents and players take early offers because of fear of slower player progression and offers not being available. This train of thought is amped up because it is reinforced by recruiters and club coaches. But the train of thought is real! Kudos to your daughter for a continued strong progression and being patient. That's how it works best for all sides. But the bigger issue is weaker progression and lack of patience. That leads to a bad situation and usually a transfer...under these new rules it may just be a bad situation for the coaches and no transfer!

I think the one thing is that we've seen a lot of major coaching changes NOT lead to transfers (Stanford/Oregon/Illinois/Louisville/both Virginias). Usually power 5 coaching changes would shuffle the roster more. As I mentioned, We don't know that they are down. But they are way off if you compare the VT transfer board listing from previous years. That's a very unscientific analysis...I realize that. That being said I think you nailed the biggest issue with this rule. Coaching Changes! You can also throw in a couple more (Clemson & UGA) and you've seen very little, if any, transfers. Which as you note, is very different from prior years. I think this new rule is a major inhibitor to the usual transfers you see after a staff change. I'm not making a judgement on the new rule, just an observation. I would imagine the scenario looks like this many times: A new staff is there for a reason. Most of the time because of the poor performance of the team. New staff would love to change some of those parts but is now restricted. Returning player was part of an underperforming team. She is part of the problem. But there is a new staff that she likes more than the last one. Why transfer if not forced to? My guess is that some AD's are getting an earful about this Power5 only pledge a couple years removed from implementation! And Nick Saban is saying "I told you so".

Setter is now listed as a student assistant at UCSB Oh, wow. She was a Badger before. Injured herself a couple of times during her redshirt freshman year and couldn't practice, fell behind in her development, and transferred to UCSB for a fresh start. She lost a year in HS due to injury, too. But she set UCSB's offense last year, so I'm thinking she might have gotten injured again and chosen to retire. I really hope the best for her. She's a good kid who's had a string of bad luck, injury-wise.
