Is Arizona really that bad or are people overlooking them. ... I don't think anybody is overlooking them. This team has had potential for the last two years. I think a lot of people, me included, are waiting to see that potential make a serious run at the top of the Pac 10.

Is Arizona really that bad or are people overlooking them. They have everyone back and the Glass and Abernathy combo is deadly. If they fix their passing problem, they can be dangerous. I am not a fan of the Cats but I think they have a lot of potential and can easily reach the elite eight Potential, yes. Potential achieved, no. They could definitely contend and turn things around. Considering how poorly UCLA performed back in 2002 and how they turned things around, it would certainly be possible. And Arizona has a lot of weapons.

In 2003 Arizona started the season ranked 10th, with all the players returning and experience gained, yet they are ranked 17th in 2004, I think they can prove a lot of coaches wrong this season

I don't think they'll be proving anyone wrong if they succeed. Being ranked 17th is a sign the AVCA voters expect better things this year. But it's up to them...

Ruffda- why don't you limit yourself to the Gophers. You can write to IB about something you have seen and can pretend to know about.
Arizona had problems, last year, with team chemistry, ball control, freshman setting, and right side.
Rubio is a great recruiter of athletic talent-almost too good since he gets a roster that is fully talented and must persuade some players, of great talent, to assume a lesser role.
Take a look at this year. Succeding setter is Butkus- frosh last year, soph in the present campaign. Recruits Dyke ( Idaho), daughter of Rubio's men collegiate VB teamate; big talent, listed as setter on the roster. Is it a year of transition? Butkus starts, but part way replaced by a frosh. Dyke is a talent, has right side potential but has underlclass newness at the setter spot.
Big time hitter, Glass, Abernathy ( who didn't show up until the 2nd half of last year) and the middle Ladd. Can these players waste another year of talent with less than great setter? These are the cream from the class of 2006. If these players don't get fed , on time, and in rythmn look to next year for success.
17th ranked is too much- like 10th was too high last year. Last 2 weeks week of Sept. is the story. Back to back from the Bay Area ( Stanford, Cal) and So. Cal (USC, UCLA). .500 - in the hunt; .250 or less- get a note from home; .750- let's rock.
Never been clear why Rubio has been a weak recruiter at the setter position-since that was his position in men's college ball- to give him credit did have some career ending injuries from the class of 2005 player. Lived with 5th year transfers from other programs over the last two years, first as a starter, then as a backup.
Great frosh in Lamb at middle-she, Glass and Ladd show you the physical prototype of the volleyball future on the net line. That is why the coaches give them the high vote. They were aall salivating and recruiting these players.

That pretty much sums up their problems last season. You could almost argue that he pursuaded almost all the players... I know that I'm not alone in thinking that Arizona has amazing talent, but hasn't lived up to expectations. Even (R)uffda thinks so! I'm huge on Dyke. She'll start as soon as she figures out the offense and the college game. Excellent class of players, yes. But they haven't been able to put anything together... most of us non-Cat fans don't WANT to see them underperform, but are starting to accept it. Eh, I don't think that they are ranked overly high, if you account for the potential they do have. There were times last season that they could have beaten any team in the NCAA's... that potential is what gives them the respect of higher preseason ranking. How does Baum fit into the middle-lineup? She was a pretty high-profile recruit for that position.

You know, I'm just not that impressed with Glass. Sure, she can hit hard but you also need to get it into the opponents side of the court. Against UCSB last year in two matches, she got 40 kills. That looks pretty impressive until you see the 27 errors. 13 net kills over two matches? She needs to learn control.

diamond, I'd respond to you, but I haven't a clue what you were talking about, let alone what I wrote that would provoke it.
Let's see. BeiBei said they weren't ranked high enough. I said they were ranked very high considering their 2003 results. I think you agree?
BeiBei said they were going to prove a lot of coaches wrong. I said Arizona is obviously well-respected, so which coaches are they proving wrong?
Now, tell me again what your complaint is?

Do any of the Stanford folks believe the rumor that Ogonna is going to redshirt this year??? Seem to be hearing that one more and more!

From what I have heard, Nnamani is expected to return to her team once she is done with the Olympics.

john would have a hard time finding places for all that talent. But would still have problems in the middle! If she does reshirt, this season is going to be a real struggle.
