This is probably a little of topic here, but when a team runs a 6-2, is there really a MB1 and a MB2? Wouldn't they both be the same as compared to the rotation of the setter(s). In theory or in practice? I would say the role of the MB1 vs. MB2 would be applied the same to the weaker of the attacking setters (or subs) to keep the offense options maximized.

Way to take volleyball nomenclature and morph it into something it is not.
MB1 and MB2 are used simply to differentiate the two positions in rotational order. MB1 and OH1 being the court positions adjacent to the setter in a 5-1 system.
It doesn't mean MB1 > MB2. Although most coaches tend to put the better attacking MB in the MB1 position (same w/OH1), that is not an absolute. There are many factors in determine a team's best rotational order.
As an example, the USA men actually put their big bombing OH in the OH2 position in Sydney 2000. With the libero easing the passing responsibility of the OH2, their receive patterns allowed the OH2 to always hit on the leftside in all 3 frontrow positions.
Now, if it was intended to say MB1 = top middle blocker and MB2 = #2 middle blocker on the team, it would probably help to desiginate it as "#1 MB" "#2 MB" or something like that. But using nomenclature like MB1 or MB2 in that manner is confusing.

But using nomenclature like MB1 or MB2 in that manner is confusing. Granted, it's not 100%, but nothing is in this sport. You seem to thrive on that. We've for years been discussing the roles of MB1 typically vs. MB2's. The MB1 is typically a better offensive weapon to compensate in a 5-1 system for the lack of front-row weapons. The MB-2 is typically the weaker offensive weapon due to their being 3 front-row weapons in that offense. An MB-1 will get more sets than an MB2, whereas an OH1 will get more sets than a OH2 typically as well, in a well-distributed system. It's theory. It's what we talk about when we are in the mood. It's probably good that you reminded us to throw out our little disclaimer, but sheeesh... quit stalking my posts, analyzing every little thing, bob.

Back to the thread topic... Colorado State will cruise once again in the MWC. Not only are they loaded but if you throw in the, "let's win it for Andy." They are a dangerous team. Utah will probably start out sketchy as they did last season and put a run together to finish strong. BYU... so much talent there, hopefully they are all team players because there will be some really good players sitting on the sidelines at all times. and the rest... SDSU: will finish 4th just because Mark Warner will get the best out of what he's got. Wyoming: 5th because Maytorena will be an All-American in home matches, oh yeah, they have to travel too, hence 5th place UNLV, UNM, Air Force: Up for grabs, it's a battle to avoid the basement.
