I hope Bratford is ok, that sucks she got hurt. Its a definite bummer, especially since she was dealing with knee tentonitis for much of the latter part of last season and I believe she took off some extra time during the off season to allow that to heal better. Fingers crossed here for her injury against USC to not be serious. For the Gophers as a team though injuries to Tree Bratford or Erin Martin are about the worst injuries they could be forced to deal with because left side is where they have the least amount of depth.

Glad to be of service. I just wish we could have been the bearers of better news. Although, a five-game, 3-point loss to the two-time defending national champs in the second match of the year with your L2 out for all of game 5 is nothing to sneeze at. (R)uffda! syas this was the best collegiate volleyball match he's ever seen. I'm sure he'll fill you all in as soon as he gets access. No later than Monday, for sure. I bet (R)uffda! will disparage poor Mick for badgering (apologies to Wisonsin fans) the refs into giving USC questionable calls in the last two games.

>-(Gorf)-<[} link=board=general&thread=1093743051&start=106#7 date=1093753522] I bet (R)uffda! will disparage poor Mick for badgering (apologies to Wisonsin fans) the refs into giving USC questionable calls in the last two games. This has been done. Actually, as you know, it started right off in game one. I'm just a lot nicer than he is (as you already know), and so I toned it down when I posted for him. Good night. Mrs. (R)uffda!

AFter tonight, it shows that USC is going down. It's only the beginning.

AFter tonight, it shows that USC is going down. It's only the beginning. And maybe it shows that Minnesota is a better team than many on this board thought. What do ya think IB?

Wow. Gentil with 37 digs, Seilhammer 30. Looking at the numbers, I can't believe Minnesota lost.

Wow. Gentil with 37 digs, Seilhammer 30. Looking at the numbers, I can't believe Minnesota lost. The Gophers led in most stats, unfortunately one of the stats they led in was in giving USC points on errors. That combined with Trisha Bratford being out in the 5th game because of an injury hurt the Gopher's chances of winning the match.

Gophers outdug, outhit, outblocked, outset--they out-everythinged the Trojans. But, as Vagabond said, they couldn't out-depth the Evil Empire. OK. He didn't use the "Evil Empire" term. I did. Just there.
So Steve, the Gopher's SID, says some clown tripped over the cord (or whatever) and yanked it from the metaphorical wall socket. Guess what? CSU had no one there who could re-connect it. Poor Steve didn't know, until game 3, that he was off the air.
Anyhow, don't blame the good old U of M for the technical snafu.
What else did I want to add? Mrs. R got it right. It was Candelas that Mick was moving around. This was a very good move and kept the Trojans in the match until Burdine came to life.
All tournament team:
Paula Gentil Erin Martin Keao Burdine Staci Venski Dre Downs (CSU) Jayme Gergen (GT). Gergen made a living hitting the inside set. MVP--Bibiana Candelas
I think Kelly Bowman should have been on the team. You can dock a setter some points for being part of a 6-2, but not if she's also hitting and digging like a demon. How's this for stats tonight? 40 assists, 18 digs, 17 kills (.355). So she only hit .111 last night. She had another 18 digs.
This was a great match. USC really raised the level of their defense after game 2. I take it back about Seilhamer. There is not that big of a drop off from Davis.
Minnesota did a great job of taking USC's middles out of the match. Adams only hit .200 and was blocked fairly often. Candelas also did not have much success out of the middle--but did a lot of damage outside.
Tree was hurt at 16-14 in game 3, when Copenhagen ran into her on a tight set. She stayed in and played all of game 4. I have to think she further aggravated it late in game 4.
Jen Bowman was put in a tough spot. Unfortunately, the Gopher serve receive went down a notch in game 5 and Taatjes had to go to her a lot.
It's as good a loss as a loss can ever be. I think USC was EXTREMELY fortunate to come away with the win and I think Mick's intimidation of the up ref had something to do with it. That being said, you have to give them credit for winning game 4, when they were obviously rattled--and, of course, for game 5.
I always thought that this was the best time to take them down, before they worked the new players in. But I think their setting is still a question mark and that Robinson is not April Ross.
I'm having a real hard time coming up with a better-played college match. This was simply terrific volleyball. And, of course, the only NACWAA championship in recent history not to be televised. Great.

Gorf, there weren't many "unforced" Gopher errors in this match. Most of their errors came at the end of very, very long rallies.
Honestly, I don't think they could have played a better match.

((* Sarcasm detecters going off everywhere. *))It sure is a good thing we've gone to rally scoring to get all the extra television coverage! *sigh*

That's fair, you were there watching while I'm only looking at the stats and heard Steve mention (before the netcast went down) at times the ball being hit into the net, antenna, or out, and knowing that they've been prone to getting into some strings of ugly hitting errors in the past. I'm glad they played as well as they did against both USC and CSU. I'm looking forward to seeing them play in person. Did you notice they almost had the 4H club in coaches? Hebert, Hilbert, Haley, and sHymansky

Yeah, kind of weird K Bow wasn't on the all tourney team..
1 Bowman, Kelly....... 5| 17 6 31 .355| 40| 0 3| 0| 18| 0 3 0| 1
17 kills, hitting .355 with 40 assists and 18 digs?
Congrats on a triple-double.
You'd be very hard pressed to find a more impressive line over the rest of the season, and this in her second match as a "starter"
