Here is a short compilation of notes and things to think about for this season.
Feel free to add more!
- It will be Dave Shoji's 30th season at the helm of University of Hawaii. The schedule/poster they have printed reflects this and it's kind of the "theme" for media.
- Minnesota's Paula Gentil's name is pronounced: "Jenn- shoe." Gazundheit.
- Back 4 more Appears to be Pepperdine's motto for the season, in reference to their potential 4th WCC crown, and possibly their first Final Four appearance?
- 49-straight match win. USC stays the team to beat this season with this remarkable streak, which coincidentally, is the same number as Idaho
s record home winning streak from 1993-1996. - Libero's to serve in 2004. UCLA's Chrissie Zartman will probably make the most of this rule change with her incredible jumper. The libero must be designated to serve one rotation in the lineup, though.
- Relaxed net rules. NCAA rulemakers relaxed net violation rules for the 2004 season. So if the guy next to you at UCSB or Long Beach is screaming his head off because the setter is in the net, please do us a favor and let them know that incidental contact with the net is now allowed (at the discretion of the referee's). I can see some inconsistent calls coming already. Examples: A setter may brush the net after a jump serve as long as it's not a quick set, and after the ball is released.
- In what is probably another rule that will end up changing the games' popularity, the "under" rule is also going to be lightened in enforcement in 2004. A player may now land their foot completely on the opponent's side of the net as long as the play is not taking place there, or there is not an opponent in 'immediate' proximity.
- All-Canadian team? There will very probably be at least 3 Canadians on the All American team this season: Sarah Pavan, Nebraska; Stacey Gordon, Ohio State; and Sarah Meek, Idaho. There are a few other Canucks that could make major contributions at the All-Conference level, as well... are we going to have to change the name to All-North-American?
