Hmm. Goes to show how important Kele Eveland was to that program. Also goes to show what Dave Shondell has done for Purdue. He has landed a bunch of studs and has a bright future. Big Ten is a tough place to try to improve your program but he seems like he is on the right track.

I think you'll see a lot of teams who are breaking in a new setter this year, really struggle early on. Some, more than others, obviously, but for a team like Tech, who relied on the quick offense and the experience of Eveland, it's gonna take some time before they get in a groove.

Wife is from big Purdue family so I follow website closely. Purdue is playing without two starters from Butler match. Ukovich (hitter) and Berg (lib) are out for min. 3 weeks with knee and foot injuries. Good win for Purdue who started three freshmen against a team who had five starters back from an Elite Eight squad.

Ukovich (hitter) and Berg (lib) are out for min. 3 weeks with knee and foot injuries. However, Berg was actually a backup and only started in replace of a minorly injured Darin Poe at L. I didn't look at the box, but Darin was expecting to play this weekend. Besides, Anne Somethingorother would have replaced Berg as L any given her match against Butler. So right now I see Berg as 3rd string L and the 4th back row specialist (behind Poe, Anne, and Dildine). Mel Ukovich has been off and on all preseason, and Mader has been getting a lot of good practice time in her place. Not a big drop off there. Purdue has some depth, so they will be running a lot of different people in the starting lineup.

Poe played at DS yesterday, while Mastandrea was the libero. I think that is an improvement for the Boilers, as Poe has some nice back row skills (passing a bullet serve from Moster well, for example) and Mastandrea is really quick did a good job of digging offspeed shots. It just gets them a net gain of one good defender in the back row from last year, in my opinion. Mader played pretty well yesterday, but she obviously benefitted from Dargan getting her the ball on the money in good situations. I am not sure how dominant Purdue's hitters are, with the exception of McConaha, but Dargan really showed what a good, experienced setter can do for a team against Tech. She is better than I thought she was. It will be interesting to see how the Boilers fare against Mizzou tonight. I expect the Tigers to win a tough match, but I will be watching the LSU Tigers start off the season in football for a while, so I will wait to go to the Field House until the epic UW-Tech match for third place .
