This thread is hilarious. You guys should try driving to and from Richmond on Memorial Day weekend. That sounds like your problem, not SCVA's problem. You should try paying the bills with the cost of living in the Orange County area. You chose to live in an area that doesn't have as much volleyball and doesn't have as big a population density. Other regions tournament's driving distances do not impact the SCVA region and it's tournament in any way. Maybe the reason SoCal teams are better is because they don't have to drive as far to play good volleyball. And love this idea that San Diego is more convenient and better for flying teams. LAX and OC airport are bigger/better/more flights than SD airport. Convention centers are convention centers, they all the same. I'd rather play in ASC than a convention center.

Moving to San Diego would be dumb. It'd definitely be real fun and a cool change, but I would feel terrible for the guys and parents from like Manhattan and North LA. That's terrible to have it that far south. What about the Santa barbara teams or central Cal? Holy Crap

Holy Crap I think they will all treat it as a travel tournament - did the Santa Barbara teams go home every night from Anaheim? I would guess even most of the OC teams will stay the weekend in San Diego.

Is there a single affordable hotel within walking distance of the Convention Center in San Diego?

I would welcome the opportunity to watch our boys play in California, LA or San Diego, in January. Sure beats driving to Chicago or St. Louis (or Indianapolis in February 2017) in the winter. Though we still do it because we love boys' volleyball!!!!

Just so you know its not a west coast bid tournament. USA Volleyball allows and owns all of the events. They just pick and choose who runs them. Its a USA VOLLEYBALL QUALIFYING EVENT FOR NATIONALS for anyone to come to. "Just like when Canada teams like to come to them and some times win them."
And is it really stealing a bid from the west coast if someone down right just beats you? Who would not of gotten a bid last year if we did not qualify before we came in Rochester? It looks like a non west coast team got the 10th bid at 18s "Hitmen." It looks like this year this event is first. You will probably get a few of the midwest and east coast teams that you did not get last year but will lose the Northern California teams this year.
More and More west coast teams are traveling to Chicago this year. Or at least this is the rumor
"Tear Drop" That you may actually have to work to get a bid and travel to more than one qualifier to do so. We went to 4 qualifiers last year and we would of qualified at all 4 of them. 5th Cali, 2nd Rochester, 2nd BANE, 3rd INDY.

I'm not saying I agree with, or understand why they've changed locations... but everyone is getting really bent out of shape about this. California is such a long state, so it isn't all that different than teams from other states driving to out of state qualifiers. I've never been to this specific qualifier, but it's never been terrible to leave a qualifier from out of state and get home by a reasonable time.

Nobody is getting bent out of shape, but why make it more difficult for the majority of teams? It makes it easier for about 5 clubs, but more difficult for about 40. Where is the logic in that. For out of state teams, it means more expensive flights. For the OC and south bay crowd, now you have to get hotels and eat out meals. Yes, Calif is a long state, so why put it at the far end?

Like I said, I don't understand or agree with why they changed it... but everyone complaining about this definitely comes across as being bent out of shape. My point that it's not that different for teams who travel across state lines compared to what the 40 clubs you've mentioned will now need to do. Maybe it will draw other teams to the tournament, maybe it won't.

I am asking for a number. And would you be upset if SCVC, Balboa, and 949 all went to the Chicago qualifier and accepted every Chicago bid?

PSA, Freedom of Information Act of 2017 (just the facts, of course), plus I'm including everything LEFT of Denver: 18 Open: 5th Aspire 18 ROX (AZ) 7th AZ Fear 18 MS (AZ) 11th THE HBC 18 Black (SC) 17 Open: 1st THE HBC 17 Black (SC) 9th AZ Feat 17 MW (AZ) 16 Open: 8th AZ Fear 16 RW (AZ) 9th Pac6 16-1 (SC) 12th T.O. 16 - Stephen (SC) 15 Open: 5th Bay to Bay 15-1 (NC) 14 Open: 4th Bay to Bay 14-1 (NC) So not that many SoCal teams at all; at least, I would not call the number "a lot"
