Losing AA Maglio, the team will definitely be weaker next year. Granato will be Granato, Iosia will be Iosia but unless we get a big time transfer, Wahine will be in for a much tougher season. I think we will be fine, IMO, there is absolutely NO WAY we dont get some sort of impact transfer, with the scholarships we have available. Even if its a grad transfer. From today's newspaper article: "Ah Mow-Santos said she receives an estimated 150 emails a day from players interested in playing for the Wahine, including foreign nationals and transfers from the D-I and junior college ranks. Her two criteria are: buying into the system the UH staff is implementing and contributing right away." Sounds like RAMS is not going to have any problems finding impact players that can come in and contribute right away....

Just wishful thinking on my part but you would think that there are a lot of highly recruited Power 5 players who are sitting on the bench because there are more talented players ahead of them.

Agree with both....UH will most likely be fine next season. Good core returning, just need a couple key components added. As much as recruits could be turned off by Ah-Mow Santos style, I am sure a lot of recruits didn't even look at Hawaii in the past 5 or so years with Shoji's pending retirement. In many of the mid level P5 schools, there are probably more than a few non contributors/starters who may be looking for a change. Not playing and winning a league or NCAA title is one thing, but not playing and finishing 5 or 6th in conference is another. Lets not forget Olivia Magill and Victoria Prince who transferred and made such a huge impact for Hawaii.

I caught the first 30 seconds or so of the NCAA post-match press conference. I don't like to see sniffling and crying and too much emotion. Makes me uncomfortable. Stopped watching after that. I always assumed RAMS was the quiet and stoic type. When did she come out of her shell?

Sounds like RAMS is not going to have any problems finding impact players that can come in and contribute right away.... Well, what I'm wondering is: of the 150 emails/day, how many are 6'2" hitters who can bang at the DI level? For every Heather Bown, Victoria Prince, and Sarah Mason, there have been an equal number of transfer duds in Wahine history. My guess is that most of those emails are from back row specialist types or 5'10' hitters. Also, if these transfer-wannabes are like me, they would send out feelers to a lot of different schools, not just Hawaii. So, Hawaii might get 150 emails/day, but so are the Penn States, Texases, UCLAs, and Floridas -- and they may be the same set of players! For the same pool of candidates among the 150 emails/day, Hawaii is competing with all those other schools and there's no guarantee that these candidates will opt for Hawaii once Penn State or Texas or USC enters the picture. I remember Dave or Charlie Wade saying something similar to RAMS re. number of email inquiries, but Hawaii hasn't always had the impact transfers. That tells me they lost out to other schools.

If anyone is wondering about former Wahine Megan Huff, she's doing well as a basketball player at Utah. In 7 games played so far, her numbers are: 13.0 pts/g avg. (I think that's 3rd on the team), 6.9 rebounds/g (2nd on team), 10 total blocks (2nd on team), 24.7 minutes/g, and 42.1% 3-pt accuracy.

Aside from relying on impact recruits, the returning players should do some self-reflection and just train hard in the off season. Watching the likes of Willoughby, Hartong, Hewitt, Kaufman, Danielson. Although many started out being good, the ended their career being great. Although, it might be difficult to have a mediocre year to an All-American year, it can be done.
The greatest year-to-year improvement I've seen from a Wahine was Nikki Hubbert from 1997-1998.

I hate to say it but with the loss of Emily Maglio and Savannah Kahakai, Hawaii needs an almost complete overhaul. On the current roster, there are no proven terminators, back row defenders (except for McKenna Ross), and consistently reliable middles.

And a few others say "we'll be OK" next year. Most years the "we'll be OK" folks are right. I"m in that camp looking at next year. We return more than we usually do. This isn't the first year an Emily Maglio graduates. It happens most years. And we are OK the next year. Are we going to be a Final Four team? Probably not, but that doesn't happen often either.

The loss of Mitchem and Taylor was tough but at least we had Maglio and Kahakai in the cupboard (all-American and first team conference players). With a new coaching staff, quality transfers may be tentative to come as the program Might not be considered the same powerhouse as under Shoji. It's not impossible, but it might be tougher to recruit for the next couple of years. Things will eventually stabilize but the first couple of years could be tough.
