I think some of the information on here is a little off. Sydney Reed is not one of Mike's recruits, she has been in the UNC pipeline for awhile coming to multiple camps the previous summers and they had already put an offer on the table to her before the new staff came in. Also her Flint Hill coach is one of Joe's closest friends. The other idea in this thread is that Tyler and Eve were the laid back coaches in the program which is absolutely untrue. Eve kicks athletes out of drills for not giving enough and for Tyler who plays in practice is extremely intense and demanding. With 7 athletes no longer being part of the program ( Leath, Julia, Borup, Holly, Mariah, Sydney and Sahrena) I think there must be some underlying issues about what is going on at UNC to make people want to leave. Tyler and Eve were laid back when you compare them to Mike and Susan...yes they would not allow you to get away with anything, but the point here is that Mike and Susan are more structured in their approach from what I see and not as fluid. Eve and Tyler seemed to take the approach of player input being relied on as a way of structuring their drills and etc....Mike and Susan have a way of doing things and they want the players to buy into the system. Im not saying one group of coaches are nazis and the others lazy. I am saying their STYLE and APPROACH are different. They may do the same things but the way they do them are different and may or may not resonate with players the same. Also regarding Sydney Reed, she has been in the "pipeline" for multiple years. Her father is very active in her training and her family has thought UNC would be a fit academically and athletically. She came to campus last weekend and visited I believe and made her commitment then. However, that was after Mike went on a recruiting trip in the same area. She was going to commit to UNC most likely, but it was ultimately Mike and Susan that bought her around to deciding to commit, because she had other options. This came from a family member that lives in the Flint Hills area.... Mike, Susan, and Joe are all very active in recruiting and have met with all the new recruits together. I think the issue at UNC is not a coaching issue...I think it is a changing of the guard issue. Joe is a good coach, he knows how to coach. He is also the kind of guy that cares about his players. However, he does not allow his players and staff to get out of line either. We have already rehashed a million times why people are leaving. There were murmurs back in December but nothing official or confirmed. In January is when I started talking to people on campus and saw where this was headed, and no one expected this many to leave, not even the coaches. Leath became a star at UNC and was from the State College Area. She knew if she had the chance to go to PSU one day should we take it and Rose contacted her about it months earlier with UNC's struggles. Julia is done with indoor because of medical issues, UNC does not offer it so she has to go elsewhere. Mariah is not leaving. She is retiring medically and is still with the team in a manager role. Holly, Borup, and Fields are choosing to leave because their core group is dismantling and there are other schools they origninally had interests in. I do not think they are underlying issues. You have to wonder if UNC stayed healthy if these players would still be leaving. As much as that sounds naive, I think these players realize UNC is going through a reboot with a new crop of talent coming in and they are choosing to leave. UNC is in a time where they had a chance to rise to the national stage last year, higher then their Sweet 16 finish in 2016 and maybe their Elite 8 run in 2014. However, other schools are challenging them and injury derailed them. So it is almost like they have to pick up new pieces and make this run again and these are players that want to win and are ready to leave for an already established, recurring national program. If you have any insight into these coaching issues or underlying issues that you have hinted at then why not let us know? I am just stating from my time at UNC and on campus and observing some practices, that the program didn't build the last few years to the level it did without a great leader. Given the program's perceived shaky status, it would be understandable for a psa who had already indicated a lean toward that program to change direction. I would say full credit should be given to CURRENT coaching staff who were able to show her and her parents that it is still her best choice. Good job on their part. There are threads, one that ended up being locked, regarding departures and transfers with negative feelings either between athletes or between the athlete and HC. Has anyone seen or heard anything regarding this type of animosity? No, you can't find anything. The ones I specifically know of had only positive things to say about Coach Sagula, just that it turned out to not be the right fit for them. (This can be possibly be covered in early recruiting threads.) But asking that question over and over again in hopes of a newer, more "interesting" answer is futile. Everyone can find something about their preacher, coach or boss they don't like. Leaving doesn't necessarily mean there's drama. Change is usually good for both parties in the end. I hope that's the case for all here as well.

There's an issue that's sort of sitting out there. 8 players left the program before completing their eligbility. The reasons in each case are different, but all 8 players had a significant injury or health concern last year. Several of the physical problems happened very early in the season. Event though these were injuries that wouldn't ordinarily be season-ending, several of the individuals never played again for UNC. I know this is odd, because UNC has a medical school with an excellent reputation, but there could be issues with the medical staff. While there are players who come back too early from concussions, there are a lot who come back within a couple weeks and are fine.

Not that we didn’t already know. But Julia posted her official transfer announcement. I’m actually sad to see her go now that it’s official : (

Long time lurker... first time poster.
Is anyone going to the Spring Tourney today? Looking forward to updates...
It has certainly been a chaotic post-season for the Heels. Its amazing how things can change over a year and a half. The 2016 season was a great ride, so much promise out of that class. Scoles in particular... I've had the good fortune of watching her play in HS and Club and was really looking forward to following her Tar Heel career. I think someone said it earlier, and I agree, that she was the glue and when she decided she wanted to move on it put the dominos in motion.
I understand Leath's desire to go home for her final year and she did struggle IMO last year due to all the injuries around her and inconsistent setting.
Evans medical retirement I think really hurts as I thought she was great in the 6-2 last year.
Hull had a chance to be a valuable utility, I got to watch her play in HS & Club as well. Great athlete, fun personality from what I have heard.
Hunter had pretty much disappeared from the bench mid-season so her departure isn't surprising.
Carlton is a bit of an enigma... extremely high ceiling with her height and skill, but she did seem to struggle with consistency at Setter. I'm surprised she is leaving, but she started working out with the UNC Club team over a month ago so I had known she was looking to transfer for a while. Hopefully, she finds the right fit for her.
Borup could have been the leader of the OH's this coming season, but I guess she didn't want to be a part of a rebuild.
With all that said... lots of potential with the incoming class, new staff, and possibly different system (Atherton in a 5-1). Patience will be a virtue in the Fall, but looking forward to watching none-the-less!

Today was the last day of spring season. UNC swept UNCG, and split 1-1 against Tennessee and Wake Forest.
Couple of quick notes: Ava Bell is really good, the back row defense is better, blocking is still solid, Ava Bell is really good, and the offense needs to be more terminal.

I also thought Bell looked really good yesterday. For various reasons, Tom Lagarde, James Michael Mcadoo, and Luke Maye were all at Carmichael yesterday. Might have been an interesting generational basketball game: 3 NBA championship rings and 2 NCAA championships.

Curious why Mcadoo was there... the other two have obvious ties to the program.

Lauren Atkins, who was a very good outside hitter, married James Michael Mcadoo just before her senior season in 2014. I think he's taking classes this summer between seasons. They were there with their daughter and maybe lining up a scholarship for 2036.

Tom Lagarde’s daughter Hadden is a freshmen outside hitter who enrolled early for the Tar Heels. I think she can be a surprise star for the Heels. In her first spring games she played really well. Since then it’s been typical freshmen up and downs but she has potential.
Bell is going to be a big time freshman. Wait until Cox and Harrison join her. Atherton’s setting and leadership with the young offense is going to be fun to watch grow.

Hate it for her... really liked Evans. Fit in really nicely playing the 6-2 in 2016. Thought her presence was really missed last year.
