There's an issue that's sort of sitting out there. 8 players left the program before completing their eligbility. The reasons in each case are different, but all 8 players had a significant injury or health concern last year. Several of the physical problems happened very early in the season. Event though these were injuries that wouldn't ordinarily be season-ending, several of the individuals never played again for UNC. I know this is odd, because UNC has a medical school with an excellent reputation, but there could be issues with the medical staff. While there are players who come back too early from concussions, there are a lot who come back within a couple weeks and are fine. It's funny you mention that. When you look at UNC sports as a whole last fall, the injuries were astronomical. The football team ended with around 20-25 guys who missed a majority of the season, if not the entire season, and I know women's soccer had a significant amount of injuries as well. Along with the volleyball injuries I wondered if it was somewhat systemic. Someone mentioned that they got a new head of sports medicine at UNC recently. I'm not sure if that means anything, but it's possible that the transition could have had some affect. I thought the amount of injuries across all sports was extremely high.

For anyone wanting to know the future of the Heels given the string of exits, here is some of the recruits I know Sagula has managed to get verbal commitments from. I’m sure there is more but these are the ones I know of and I’m sure more will be added. 2019: Olivia Diaz L/DS. Karenna Wurl. L/DS. Parker Austin. OH. Skyy Howard MB/OH 2020: Kaya Merkler. MH Sophie Fischer. MH. Sydney Reed. OH/DS Parker Austin looks solid but Skyy Howard's highlights were really exciting to watch. She'll be very dynamic in the middle for us. The one thing I'm worried about moving to a 5-1 system going forward is that our middles (as of right now) don't play well behind the setter. I think this recruit would definitely help with that. She's a top-50 out of Charlotte. www.hudl.com/video/3/10177225/5a31dcbfd21c690ddc6ec6bd

However, Skyy is so versatile. She was at UNC camp this past weekend and she is like Ava Bell, she can play the pins and the middle and attack from the back row. And her vertical speaks about her name! Esterly and Clark have been working on the slide this off season so it will be a work in progress. While we wait to know the true extent of Harrison's injury, it is nice to know that many players on the roster can fill multiple positions.

Diaz is an amazing defender if her video is anything like her true performance. Fischer looks promising in 2020 too. Reed - I really think there is little defense work on that reel to judge. I don't think they'd pull her OH. Maybe they see something rockstar in her in person. Let's hope.
I'd love to see them bulk up the back row in anticipation of a young group of girls and strong defense is so important especially when you have low or inexperienced offense . Thank goodness Jacobs & Fradenburg have a year or two left barring any defense injuries.
Although by the time '20 rolls around that group will have matured and hopefully progressed to that next level.
Can't wait to see what Diaz does though. I watched a video of her awhile back when it was announced and you can tell she's still developing as a player. This potential is so fun to see in a player as they continue the growth curve into college.

Nice coverage of the recruits. I did not know we picked up Carly Peck. She will add to the pin depth of the 2019 class.
Whereas UNC has primarily been an offensive team in the past, the defense looks to be an area the coaches want to add depth to. Next year we will have possibly 6 DS/L players on the roster. Combine that with the offensive power Sagula will have this year and next, and its not hard to see that even though he is going to have to reboot this year, the future looks promisingly bright.

I've been able to watch Howard, Fischer, and Peck in both HS and Club over the past few years.
Howard is a dynamic athlete. My daughter played against Mallard Creek during Howard's Freshman year and you could just see her potential. She was very raw then, was forced to play 6 rotations out of necessity, but it certainly has paid off for her development. Extremely high ceiling and versatility. Very exciting.
Fischer is still young and has plenty of room to grow. She has a thinner frame from what I remember, but there is great potential with her as well. Her current club team has 4 girls (including her) that are committed to D1 schools already (3 ACC) so they have some talent.
Peck is another great athlete and power hitter. My only concern with her is that she developed a reputation in Club as being a bit of a drama queen/prima donna. That was her 15s and 16s years, and she switched clubs for her 17s season - now playing on the same team as Howard, Emma Ellis (Purdue), Isabella Bell (Kentucky), and Maylen Mitrovich (one of the top 2021 setter recruits in the country) - so not sure if that talk has changed. Otherwise, she is very skilled and has a high ceiling.

I've seen Jacobs' name brought up a lot in regards to bolstering the defense; but, I feel like she's a liability. Am I just missing something? She's very streaky. She had some good games last year, and she provides a lot of energy, but when opposing coaches are purposely singling out your libero (last year) to serve to (happened a lot last year and Eve did almost exclusively during the last spring scrimmage) there is a red flag there. I feel like she'd benefit the team most as the serving specialist or a sub to bring some energy from the bench. I think you go Fradenburg as the libero and then Moseman as your DS, yes?

I may have only watched matches where she wasn't streaky. I haven't kept up as much as I'd like on the Carolina matches. What I had seen she was solid but you may be spot on for sure. I'd never argue my point with anyone and maybe saying something based on my small bit of watching match experience this past season was fool hardy. I never claimed to not be a fool though! Edited to add: What I will say is what I saw from Jacobs was great and I do like her energy and that may play on the audience effect more than a really solid player (with less energy) would. I stand by my point on Diaz. She looks like a terrific recruit for that back row.

My question is just consistency. I think her energy is undeniable and maybe it's one of those "X" factors that the coaches need on the court. I agree, I think Diaz looks really good - very smooth. Wurl looks solid too - she almost makes it look incredibly easy. On her highlight video it looks like she sees the game much slower than the rest.

I'd say that Jacobs is very positive presence on the team. She works hard, has a good attitude, and has always had the physical tools. She essentially had a full ACC season to claim the job; she didn't. In fact, she played less in the last few matches of the season.
She definitely had her moments and some very good matches, but the libero is also the team's rock. All players make mistakes, but really good teams can't afford to have a libero who makes multiple mistakes, especially at key moments. As pointed out above, it's never a good sign when the other team starts serving your libero (fwiw both UNC and FSU took to serving Karelov when playing Duke, so it does happen some to good liberos). There were some matches where Jacobs either disappeared (Pitt and FSU) or where she made more than one mistake at critical points in sets (a couple first contacts over the net come to mind).
Some backrow players are naturally steady; some develop it. I'm not saying that Jacobs can't get there. For example, Taner and Kaylie Gibson were very different as seniors than they were earlier in their careers. That said, I think Jacobs currently looks more comfortable either in the DS or the service specialist role.
My sense is that Fradenburg is probably the best candidate for the libero role. She's the one of the current group who makes the routine plays the most consistently both digging and in serve receive(at least in the matches I saw). While Moseman often had very good stretches, I'm not sure about her consistency in serve receive and her range side to side seems a little suspect on defense. She is really good as the designated server though. I just haven't seen enough of Hough. One area that really needed improvement all around though was plays where the libero winds up setting. We were sort of spoiled by Taner who was originally a setter and Doyle who technically wasn't as fancy, but who was remarkably consistent with her bump sets. Last year, there were a fair number of libero sets that wound up either out of bounds, on the other side of the net, or in the net.

Here is a quick Video from Parker Austin - 2019 Commit Full Rotation Pin. didn’t even watch that much and she looks really solid. I’m shocked I’ve never heard her name before.

She is going to add to the pin depth next year. While this year may be the beginning of the reboot, UNC is going to be stacked in every position next year. Imagine Cox, Harrison, Parker, Peck, and LaGarde all as pin options.
I also can’t remember, ever, when Sagula has had two stellar recruiting classes in two consecutive years. Normally, he stacks the talent every 2 or 3 years. But next year he brings in Austin, Skyy Howard, Carly Peck, and two VERY strong DS players. Patience will be key but the future looks stellar. You know....barring injury 🤦♂️
