Tyler is a great asset to the program and he will continue to help Sagula in offensive development and on blocking schemes. That is his strength. Losing Eve as an offensive coach is a loss, but her recruiting is what Sagula needs to look at in who he hires. She recruited the #8 class in 2012 and the #3 class in 2016. This years 2018 class will likely be top 15 or top 10. Sagula player a hand in it but she has really helped get the recruits to make the program relevant.
I think he will look for either someone with club connections who can be a good recruiting resource or a previous player. Usually, no one knows a program better than someone who has been in it. However, it’s a different dynamic when you are partners with your head coach versus a player under the coach. I agree the pool there is limited. He could also go for an assistant at a B1G or PAC School that wants to move from assistant to the associate head coach position.

I agree that Tyler Adams has been a great asset to UNC volleyball and that his contributions have been underappreciated.
If UNC wants someone familiar with the program, Paula Giles was last year's operations manager and she has experience as an assistant at the college level.
There are just lots of questions headed into 2018. The question of how to best use Carlton never exactly got resolved, among other things.

From a historical standpoint, between 2002 and 2012, UNC also won the ACC 2X, in 2005 and 2008.

Sagula's hope was that Carlton would run a 5-1 75% of the time and then to frustrate opponents and change it up he would add another setter in the back row a couple of rotations for her to hit. It will be interesting since she has had a season to get better and will train in the spring to see if he gives her the full reigns again to start the season in a 5-1. However, I doubt that. Evans is a tremendous asset. Not only is she a great setter but she has the leadership that the team needs. Plus, adding in Harrison, Cox, Bell, LaGarde, and Scoles returning, and there is a lot of talent to use on the pins in a 6-2 and that does not include Carlton on the right either. We have not even discussed Leath and Borup. The pins will be loaded.

Last year was a very difficult season, but I think it was especially hard on Carlton. She lost a lot of training time because of the ankle injury and I don't think she ever recovered full mobility. Each week, she was setting different hitters and after the team went to a 6-2, she was hitting off a setter who worked very hard and improved a great deal, but who also had limited experience at this level.

I think that Carlton definitely struggled because of the load she was carrying. I agree that she was not fully healed with her ankle injury. I was very tough on Koetter and I didn’t think she was consistent as a setter at all, but when you point out the changes because of hitters being injured, I see why consistency could be an issue. Leath even struggled because she had so much pressure on her to produce offense and defense.
If Carlton heals up and gets more setting reps and to hit off of Evans more, she will be a 6 rotation player that breaks out in her sophomore year. This 2018 roster is loaded with potential ACC team members and POY candidates. But the defense is my biggest question. Setter should be answered this year with Evans and Carlton returning but I think libero comes down to Fradenburg or Hough.

I think one of the big questions headed into the season for UNC is who will provide floor leadership? If the team goes to a 5-1, it's critical that Carlton be more of a floor leader than she appeared to be last year. Whatever system Coach Sagula settles on, UNC needs to find a player or a couple players who are going to hold their peers accountable both by example and emotionally. It's really hard to know how something like that will work out. I do think the better teams has someone on the floor who serves as the team's leader. In 2016, Anjaku made a huge difference for Stanford even though she only played half the rotations. I think Hunter and Albrecht did that for Nebraska last year. For UNC, I think Sheila Doyle set the tone for the team in a way that wasn't always noticed and Curry did it in a way that was probably more noticed. Someone this year needs to be out there sending the message, "This is the standard for Carolina volleyball."

I think hands down the leaders will be Leath as a senior and Scoles with her hunger to return

Update on UNC
Injuries: all players are now practicing with the exception of 3. Evans is still out dealing with some lingering concussion symptoms. Laufenburg is healing from her stress fracture and is practicing minimally, but she is getting some reps in. Fields is still out as they still have not found out how to deal with her passing out spells. They are hoping to get news in the next few weeks. However, it is encouraging that Scoles, Hull, Fradenburg are back. Also, Lagarde and Bell are early enrollees and are already rumored to be impressing.
Coaching: I have not heard any news on finding an Associate Head Coach to replace Rackham. In fact, I have heard that Adams is also considering leaving....if true I have a feeling whoever Sagula hires, will be with intentions of him grooming them to take over and build the program more in the next few years.

How did they all get their concussions. Did Evans get hit in her temple I’m not sure. I know Scoles was hit during open gym last summer and then in the upper head area the second game of the season to cause reinjury, Evans was hit at the beginning of preseason, Fradenburg was hit during practice twice. Hull was the only one that happened during a game and it was her head slammed into the floor going after a ball. Scoles was cleared back in November to practice, and Hull and Fradenburg slightly after. We will know more on the extent of Evans depending on if she plays spring or not. Spring will be interested to see based on the talent level returning and coming in and the coaching vacancy or vacancies. Next year we may see a completely new coaching support behind Sagula which could mark a new brand of Carolina Volleyball. Not to mention it will be the most ranked recruits on a team in a season (10).

Thank you for the update. Losing both Eve and Tyler would be a huge blow to the program, but Joe should be able to attract some high quality candidates for both positions.

Losing both Eve and Tyler would cause a shift in the coaching style and paradigm. One reason UNC has been a great blocking team has been because of Tyler and their offense because of Eve. It will be interesting to see if both left if the UNC identity and strengths would remain, grow, or change. I do believe that whoever he hires he will intend on grooming them to take over the program the next few years and encourage them to begin establishing a culture.
