These will always be huge human factors that can't be ignored or hand-waived away: - playing up to your competition, on a live BTN (not plus) audience - playing down to your competition - being physically, mentally, emotionally drained after a huge match (Wisc in Madison) - over-looking your opponent or dismissing them as having a chance (somewhat similar to the second point)
I believe all of these struck in a perfect storm at home vs Michigan St. That's what I'd like to believe, anyhow. Until proven wrong, I'm going with that.

Still say it was just serving. MSU had a great match from the service line and that pushed it to five.

Seeing Rutgers take MSU to five makes Minn's own five setter against MSU, at home no less, all the more mystifying. Yeah, I know, I know. "MSU played out of their minds." Etc., etc. Still . . . you sweep everyone but Nebraska and Wisconsin and then go 5 with a team that had won just one set in it's last 19 and which 10 days or so later just manages to squeak by Rutgers? How is that even possible? Maybe someone put a hex on Minn. It's matches like the one against MSU that make me insecure just about every time the Gophers play, no matter what the record is, no matter what Pablo says. Some teams' strengths just happen to match up better against others. As Ruffda has said, it was about serving. If you can serve extremely tough to take away the speed of MN's offense, you'll have a chance at scoring a lot of points. I remember remarking during the match how the passing for MSU is so low as they push it toward the setter. I wonder if that tempo tended to challenge our middle block a bit more as well. Maddie Haggerty served and passed generally well, but we continued to go to her for whatever reason. Cathy George's squads can give us fits.

Nov 3, 2018 22:50:19 GMT -6 mcmike said: MSU did not play like a team who was 3-10 in B1G play. If this was a typical MSU performance you can be sure they would have better B1G record. Did anyone hear what Hugh had to say after the second set? "I thought our first contact was a little cleaner in set 2...if we can get our side out rhythm we're generally in good spots...but if we can't pass it gets to be tough..."
As mentioned above MSU swept the Gophers in MPLS 13 months ago and their serving pressure had us out of system... a lot. They are still delivering hard driven flat serves that are a challenge to receive.
I watch MN and I see 2 Achilles' heels. Great warrior but two vulnerabilities: Defending the slide Succumbing to service pressure
In system and not hitting into the opponents' blocks (which they did a fair amount of early vs MSU) MN may be the best team in the country. For all of the BTN, SEC, youtube & ESPN matches I've watched or scanned any team can look great if they have good passes, a GOOD set, and a competent striker.
I agree with the above comment that sometimes you play up to the level of your competition... or down.

re. Maryland? Whew!
If we have a start against PSU as we did against Maryland in Happy Valley we won't be feeling happy at match's end.

People always talk about the depth of the present team or previous Minnesota rosters. However, it is not Hugh's MO to go to it much at all. Even when a player or two are struggling. Like mcmike said, we struggled for 1 1/2 sets against Maryland. I just feel a NEW SPARK might do wonders for a team. Especially when you are that far into a match with very poor stats.
IMO Hugh's double sub just has NOT PRODUCED the numbers he is probably looking for. So why does he continue using it in matches? I know he didn't during this Maryland match. Is there another surprise in the works somewhere? If there is, we could have used it last night to jump start this poor start (again).
I know it has been a grind and a long season, but when certain players are in a funk can't a coaching staff go to the bench once in awhile to give us a much needed lift in a set? If I was betting, I would certainly put my money on about 3-4 eager candidates in waiting.
Maybe it is time to start focusing on our coaching staff.

That's also how you lose. You fall behind and rather than trusting the players you know are your best, you panic and start running players who aren't as good in there. And it snowballs.
I'm also not sure who he would have pulled. Samedy was the one playing the worst to start the match. Do you pull her? For Martin? Pull Morgan for Swider? Hart for Martin or Sheehan? CC for Beckley? Sam out for Sara?
Not a chance.
As for the double sub, it *has* worked. It also has not worked. Seems like you want to work on making the former the case more often?

It's simply not who he is as a coach, or who this team is (which is also why the seniors didn't play much on senior night): "Play every point as if it's the same" gets tricky with different personnel. Heck, I'm surprised when he switches up the rotation the Gophers start a set in.

Then he should quit using the rhetoric - Hugh is the one that preaches “meritocracy” and about the incredible depth on his team and how not much separates the players. If that is the case then how does Martin who earned the L1 spot get benched for the year after one shaky set. How does Sheehan who was a starting six rotation player at her last school not get subbed in when someone is struggling and how do you not play the seniors for some decent time on senior night against a team that they were beating fairly easily. How do you not give Swider a little bit of game time experience or the smalls. It’s his team and he can do what he wants but at least be transparent about it. My concern is what if someone goes down with an ankle or something like that at this point of the season you will be putting in a player/players who have had no significant game time experience when there have been plenty of opportunities to do so. Coaches/teams want and need depth for a reason - so use it!

Ok struck another nerve - this was a conversation about using the depth on the team so I guess based on your post you also disagree.
