Interested to see what the projected lineup would be. Do you think it’s possible Atkinson will play 6 rotations and DS the outsides? That would imply a 2 man passing scheme - gosh this team is so young.

From the looks of video, Atkinson is playing all the way around. Almost like Purdue 2015 where Drews played all the way around and Epenesa/Stahl were the outsides with Workman/Smith as the DS. Granted, Epenesa eventually played all the way around for a spurt, something that maybe Newton can develop into.
From what I can view on practice video, the current A-team is:
S: Bush OPP: Atkinson OH: Newton OH: Joined MB: Nobler MB: Johnson (?) L: Peters DS: Hornung DS: Otec
I believe Reisinger will work her way into a serving sub.
Also, from what video/photos I can gather, Atkinson might be involved in the passing scheme. That will be interesting. Otherwise, I think Newton is intended to pass unless she struggles. Maybe Joiner too. I can't see the Boilermakers passing with two just yet. If either outsides struggle, I've seen Hornung take a few practice swings and I wouldn't be surprised to see Otec swinging too. They're undersized but both have great arms.

I see Atkinson having a stellar senior season. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone who developed as rapidly as she has. She came in as an unknown and ended up as a 3rd team all American. I absolutely love her game. The real question marks obviously are Bush and Other OH - probably Joiner. With Cavanaugh helping Bush that boosts my confidence but does anyone know how Joiner will fare in the B1G? I saw she was originally committed to (west)Virginia? They have to make sure they develop offense besides Atkinson, or they’ll wind up one-dimensional like with Turner. Oh geez, not that. I'm sure they'd hate to have a NPOY candidate and an Elite Eight run.

Purdue takes down Wofford (25-15, 25-18, 25-17)
Starters
OH: Newton (Hornung) OH: Cleveland (Otec) MB: Mohler MB: Cuttino S: Bush OPP: Atkinson L: Peters Serving Specialist: Reisinger for Mohler
Set 3 had Johnson in the middle for Cuttino.
Interesting Notes: MB Cleveland is playing on the outside. Atkinson dominated, of course, but she also got quite a few digs playing back row. When Hornung is back row and Cleveland is front row, Purdue only passes with two. Also, for half a rotation, Atkinson swings from the left, Cuttino from the right, and Cleveland in the middle.
Bush looked solid with a few questionable set choices here and there. Johnson.... is still a freshman. Cuttino played a better all-around game. Atkinson's serve has gotten even better.
In set 3, we ran without a libero for a little bit and Reisinger got a lot of back row play toward the end of the set until Mohler subbed back in (along with Peters for Johnson.)
A lot of potential on the floor. Newton looked sharp and Otec/Hornung are definitely the future for Purdue's back court.

Is Cleveland on the left a permanent thing? I guess that’s where we are youngest - she actually looked really good out there. Surprised to see Johnson play - I thought maybe she would redshirt. If Cleveland is sticking to outside will Joiner redshirt? Oh the possibilities.

I definitely feel like the rotation isn't anything close to set in stone, I'm guessing the coaching staff will do A LOT of tweaking this weekend.

Just came home from tonight’s match. It was really weird not seeing Evans/Stahl/D. Cuttino...but it was nice to see the freshman hold their own. Cleveland/Bush/Hornung played very well tonight. Like I always say, I don’t know much about volleyball and skills...but they looked great. The future looks bright ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

Purdue sweeps the weekend. Good start, though these teams were definitely just a warm-up.
It's too early to call anything definite but:
• Atkinson is going to be a force this year. Her defense has really gotten better. Her serve is on point and she's hitting great from the front row. Would love to see them develop her back row attack to be more impactful. • Newton/Cleveland is interesting. Both look eager; Newton definitely improved as the weekend went on. Love when they run the X play with her. • Hornung isn't going to take long to adjust. She looks great out there. Love that she and Otec are swinging from the back row when they get the chance. • Peters... dare I say it is a beast. She controls that back court. My only complaint is her setting is a work-in-progress. A major work. A "let someone else set when Bush takes the first ball" work-in-progress. • Bush is a gamer. Her body control when the ball is forced too close to the net is wonderful. She's going to be quite the setter with this program. • Mohler! Her blocking is ridiculous. And you can tell she wants to be an offensive juggernaut too. But that blocking... wow, she's going to shut a lot of hitters down. • We'll see how this two-person serve receive holds up in B1G play. Now that the MSU Tour de Force has graduated, there's no dominant serving team in the B1G but there's still some servers who will give two passers fits. At least Reisinger or Van Zelst can sub in for Atkinson in the back if needed.
But it looks like it'll be a fun, learning year. We won't lose as much as last year when the season is over, which bodes well for 2019 and 2020! As long as Newton continues to progress, the Boilermakers can once again out-perform pollsters expectations.

I like your assessment of these matches. I agree that I liked seeing Hornung attempting some kills in the back row. She was hitting hard and could probably get some kills when catching the opposing team not paying attention. I agree that Peters could improve on her setting the ball. During the match against BGSU, she made a bad set for Atkinson. Her digging has improved and she was chasing balls all weekend. I was pleasantly surprised by Bush. I thought that she would be less aggressive for being shorter than our setters in the past. I liked seeing her going for a kill and going over on 2nd touch. I also enjoyed watching her block well too. She was just good all over. Purdue sweeps the weekend. Good start, though these teams were definitely just a warm-up. I was catching up on the videos on Facebook that Coach Shondell did and it seems it will be the plan. They are going to want Atkinson to be in there as much as possible as an offensive threat. It looks like Hornung and Otec are comfortable hitting in the back row as well...but how effective will it be against more formidable opponents? I think Newton, Mohler, Cuttino and Cleveland can also develop into better offensive weapons when everyone is looking at Atkinson. It’s always better to have an evenly distributed offense rather than just one star. I also just noticed that Coach Shondell gave #20 to Cleveland. That is a huge honor. Lynch and Cuttino became eventual stars. I am hoping she will develop into something special. I have a question. Who does people think will be redshirted? Coach Shondell spoke highly of Johnson and Joiner. Maybe save them for later?

If I'm correct, you can play in the practice gym and participate during the spring, but if you play a single point during the season, you lose that eligibility to redshirt that year. I think pre-conference counts toward playing.

I want to say they changed a rule in football that let you play a certain number of games, does anyone more knowledgable than me know if something here changed too?
