This one simple line from the USC website: Sorry, USC. But you've got to do a little better than that. I don't care how messy the separation with Haley may have been or even if Haley behaved in a horrible manner...you just don't put out a release like this without throwing a few props to Haley. Take the high road, fercrisakes. A lot of thought goes into these types of releases. Swan could have said something about Haley's succcessful career. Crouch could have talked about how honored he is to replace a legend. Instead that one puny sentence. 22 paragraphs and you can't throw Mick a bone? Says a lot about the class of the USC Athletic Department....and it ain't high. Not sure how most schools handle this; but, an official release about a new hire is about the new hire, not the accomplishments of the previous coach. The official release which discussed Haley's departure is the one which should have touted Haley's accomplishments. When Pete Carroll left USC, did the official release of the new hire (Lane Kiffin or Steve Sarkisian) include all the accomplishments of Coach Carroll?

Good for Brent but holy crap what kind of decision is this from USC? Imagine the fan base if they did this in football. Incompetent. I would have been happier if we poached a coach from your mighty conference, the AAC. I would have been quick to refer Bakeer Ganesharatnam. He's done a really solid job at rebuilding Temple. Oh, and Broad St aint that different from Figueroa Agree

This reminds me of the U.S. Presidential election back in the early 1990s. Ross Perot's running mate was James Stockdale, an unknown figure. During the Vice Presidential debates, Stockdale said:

I think Crouch applied for the job, like you would when you walk intom McDonald's and a sign says, "Now Hiring. Applications available at the desk." Haters. That’s all this board does is hate on someone that’s not their person. Lift a human up! Be thankful and hopeful that someone who’s not “your pick” to do great things! My goodness. The thirst is real. I don't think it's about being haters, or "not your pick". This is a very underwhelming hire. Not to say it won't work out, or that it won't be great, but it is without a doubt underwhelming. A program like USC should have the power to go out and hire a head coach that has proven he can guide a top 25 program consistently, maybe even a top 15 program. On the outside maybe an extremely successful mid-major program (i.e. Northern Iowa, Creighton, etc...) or an assistant coach that has put in their time at other top programs legitimately in the championship hunt. Good luck to him, but if I'm a USC player or recruit, I'm likely very disappointed in this hire.

Don't see how you get rid of Mick Haley for Brent Crouch. Tom Black, Dan Fisher, KBB, Olmsteads, etc. would be justifiable. I have to have hope and support my team, but the way the USC AD handled this will always leave a sour taste in my mouth. Mick didn't deserve this. Fight On! I agree and was very surprised by this hire, But best of luck to him and USC. Why get rid of Mick if they didn't already have a top coach lined up? Did something else go down behind the scenes? Still puzzled by this, but hope he does a good job. He seems like a good guy.

Don't you think the lawyers had a say in the wording?

it’s obvious that USC looked to fill this job like they were doing the candidates a favor. USC is not a no questions asked-destination for everyone. Not when you can have great programs in other parts of the country with better crowds, better quality of life, with just a good if not better recruiting areas to work with.

But, yeah, USC should salute him for going public with claims of age discrimination and a lawsuit.

Last time USC hired, they were able to lure a National Champion coach away from a major athletic power. I hope Couch comes in and does a great job and wins his own national championships, but I am not the only one that sees a difference here, right? The landscape has changed in 17 years. Times change, and there has been a recent cluster or major retirements that make this a particularly tight job market, I think. In 2000 (or whenever Mick was hired) was there the recent retirement/firinig of 4 HOF coaches in a 12-month period?

In 1999, when Mick was hired, he was not the first or even second choice (one of those retiring HoF'ers was, and turned it down). USC was also a program that hadn't seen a lot of success in a while. Today, USC has a much higher academic profile, and the women's program has also come a long way. But there is simply no way imo to cast this hire as worthy of where USC ought to be. Good job, Donna!
