Anyone watches Rick Steves' Europe on PBS? I always like his travel show. Now that he got his youtube channel, I enjoy going on his channel to watch episodes from the earlier seasons. Unlike the abrasive "in-your-face" attitude of so many youtubers these days, he doesn't do outlandish stuff to attract hits, he just gently displays his expertise on Europe's history and sights. He has a friendly, approachable and soothing style that I find quite pleasant and refreshing:

is it weird to revive a almost five year old thread? maybe. but i want advice from maybe cultured people to a non-cultured one. are the "third party" guides to the Vatican Museums worth it? (or even legit) something like thisor would I be better off just getting the one from the Vatican site (either guided or guideless)

It is immense and you can easily miss things if you don’t know what you’re looking for. Pro tip: when you go through the Sistine Chapel, stay right and take the door/staircase that says groups/tours. Takes you directly down to St Peter’s. Otherwise you end up in the cue heading back outside and you may not get back in. These are the kind of things guides are great for. However, after the first time, now when I go, I just kind of wander around and try to find new things to see.

I prefer to read guidebooks and such in advance, but then explore things on my own when I get there. (Note, I have never been to Roma or the Vatican. The closest I have come is Firenze and Napoli.)
