I'm a SoCal guy, and I was trying to imagine what an All Star SoCal team would look like (with driving distances in reason). Its funny we make a big deal about TAV and A5 and such, but if SoCal didn't dilute talent, would be crazy to see how good of teams they would have. A5 has been so solid, bummed if it starts to dilute. I used to live in SoCal so I can relate to the fact that it can take forever to get somewhere. The thing about A5 is that the kids do travel. We have 1 girl on the team that lives 2 hours away from the club. Several others live an hour away. We live 50 minutes from the club. There are several kids in the club that are South of Atlanta and drive by A5 South to get to A5. We drive by GA5 to get to A5. I don't know the culture in SoCal, but A5 is on such a higher level, parents and kids make the sacrifice to go there. I think I read somewhere about an A5 player that actually took a flight to get to practice. Was that A5? Regardless, that’s dedication.

We have a couple of families that moved here for the club... that much I know. I think one of the families is only here for club, then they go back home for the rest of the year (benefits of home school and money).

Yes, dedication to mowing down any obstacle standing in the way of your (kid’s) dream.

They werent at the Beast of the Southeast! Doesn't A5 own/run that tournament? Sounds like club politics at it's finest.

Beast was an 18s Qualifier, but considering they punched their ticket in Nashville, I guess they didn't need to be there.

Isn't part of the point of playing in these big tourneys to condition a team to consistently play at their best potential?

Yes their event. A5 had 20 teams play. 18-Scott won an 18 open bid. 18s was the only bid division. That 20 does not include the 7 A5 south teams of which 18-Jeremy won an 18 American bid.

So they actually chose to play in the TOUGHER event even though it was in KC instead of their backyard.

I should get my first look at the 17-1s team this weekend at Bluegrass. Their 17-2s team is solid; they split with GA5 and lost the the A5 16-3s team at 1st Lady. As a new club, it is probably smart to stay clear of the A5 tournaments. Most of the local clubs like Cobb Atlanta and Tsunami usually only send a few teams.

TK Volleyball is playing SA Magic on Periscope right now. It looks like the parent streaming is a TK parent.

Circling back to this thread now that qualifying season is almost over (at least in the SO). The A5 family (A5, A5 South, A5 Chattanooga, and GA5) ended up with 23 bids to Nationals, so far. 18 of those bids were from the parent club. All of the A5 18s, 17s, and 16s teams qualified. TKs 18s finished ranked higher than A5's 18-1s team at nationals finishing 29th compared to 41st. I don't believe that either of TKs 17s qualified, they don't have a 16s team, their 15s qualified at Big South in the Open division, and their two 14s teams did not qualify.
Overall, I would say that this was a great 1st season for TK. Their 18s team was loaded and getting their 15s qualified is awesome too. Next year, when they move to their new location, we will see if they can continue on their start. They will need to beef up their younger teams if they want continued viability.
If you rank Atlanta Volleyball based on bids, this is what I think I see (if I missed anyone, sorry): A5- 18 Tsunami- 5 A5 South- 4 Cobb Atlanta- 4 TK- 2 Rio- 1 Atlanta Extreme- 1

I completely agree that TK had a great first year, but in the initial question about what kind of shake up would TK create in Atlanta, I don't see where there's been much. TK's 18 and 15 teams came straight from A5. Those were the only 2 teams to qualify. As qualifier season ends, it doesn't seem like there's any talk of A5 upcoming (current 15, 16 or 17) going to TK next year except the possibility of a couple overflow kids that TK might get for 18's next year. TK is certainly doing everything they can to take A5 kids, including opening a building not even 5 miles from A5. But in my opinion, the only way TK will become viable is by building her own players from 15 and younger. The older kids just don't seem to have desire to leave A5. TK is affecting Cobb, NAVC and those clubs.
