McCutcheon, for me, is one of the best coaches out there. He's a master at adjusting on the fly. What does he do that makes him a "master" at adjusting in-match?
He's quick to make the proper rotational changes when his team is struggling.
Where other coaches are annoyingly reactive, he's much more proactive.

This thread seems to have brought out the trolls from under the bridges where they live.
I always thought that trolls live in caves. Just sayin'.

McCutcheon is pretty much a systems coach. Are you saying he is quick to sub players in or out, or he is quick to adjust his rotations I.e. "Spin the dial" (which can only happen at the beginning of a set?)

Spinning the dial. He doesn't delay.
Other coaches wait to see if their players can "figure things out" and end up losing another set. I like how Hugh quickly identifies weaknesses he can exploit and gets after them.
It doesn't always work out, but more often than not it does. It's frustrating seeing a coach sitting on the sideline looking perplexed and wondering why things aren't going according to the original game plan.

It's frustrating seeing a coach sitting on the sideline looking perplexed and wondering why things aren't going according to the original game plan. Spinning the dial isn't a particularly strong tactical move. The main reason to use it is to obtain one or more favorable match-ups across the net. But it can only happen once at the beginning of the set, and is available to the opposing coach as well, which can make it difficult to ensure what match-up you're actually getting. McCutcheon may well be one of the best college coaches currently in the game, but it's not for the reasons you're putting forth. McCutcheon's strength isn't his in-match adjust on the fly use of tactics. His success is based on teaching and developing an understanding of a fundamental system. McCutcheon emphasizes efficiency within the system.

Any evidence that he does this more than other coaches? Seems like a pretty baseless, random claim that you made up “on the fly.”

Wow. AVCA is making a big production out of their first poll of the season today. Have they done it like this in the past? Seems like a lot of slow-drip drama for a pre-season poll.

For the 2018 season a couple of us thought it would be fun to put together a Volleytalk Top 25 weekly ranking Every week you will be posting a new thread?

Seems like a pretty baseless, random claim that you made up “on the fly.” Maybe I'm not watching enough Minnesota matches, but it's always seemed that Hugh isn't very tactical and more conservative in his approach. It's all about minimizing errors and making the other team beat them. The players really don't take big swings out of system, they're not particularly aggressive when serving, etc.

Just glad that there’s at least an effort to create some excitement.
