I'll need to see what Beth can do with her retooled lineup at Utah. Losing Anae, Trueman, and Luafalemana was a huge hit to their O. I suspect she'll have them playing pretty solidly somewhere in the middle of the season if not sooner.

Utah also lost more than just Anae, Trueman, and Luafalemana. They lost Scully who was their next outside hitter behind Trueman and also played as the DS. As well as Glasker who played as a DS if they weren't running a 6-2 and needed backrow help for the opposite. Then Abels is gone and she was the other setter in Utah's 6-2.
The Utes had 6-3 opposite who decommitted last fall but picked up Ka'-ha'aina-Torres who will back-up as setter with Van Kolden.
I'd be generally surprised if Utah ends the season ranked. They have a lot of competition and returning talent ahead of them. But who knows, Beth's teams have shocked the PAC-12 before.

Machado was the main other setter in the 6-2 and she transferred to SDSU. Scully landed at Pepperdine. Those kinds of transfers should be replaceable by the excellent incoming class. But I had forgotten that Trueman also graduated, and Luafalemana. I like the talented recruits, but I still think the production of Anae was something special that most programs would love to get once in a decade, and freshman, as good as they are, can’t replace that. Time will tell if I am wrong. |

Totally agree with Barton. She looked pretty good with CNT this Summer. She could really make Utah better.

For the 2018 season a couple of us thought it would be fun to put together a Volleytalk Top 25 weekly ranking! \ Any idea what the target date is for the 1st weekly poll? |

For the 2018 season a couple of us thought it would be fun to put together a Volleytalk Top 25 weekly ranking! \ Any idea what the target date is for the 1st weekly poll? The current timeline is all voters submit their new rankings Sunday evening 8/26 and they will be tabulated and the VT weekly rankings will be released Monday evening. Although it was pointed out by some of our astute west coast voters that there are a couple matches that end late Sunday evening, Hawaii vs UCLA for example, so the home office may change this so all outcomes will be included to ensure accuracy. We also might start posting the Volleytalk Top 25 weekly ranking moving forward on each Tuesday. What is your recommendation? |

I don't know how long it takes to tally the votes, but I think it would be better for the voters if you gave them untill Monday morning to submit their votes and released the VT Top 25 poll around the same time as the AVCA, for maximum effect.

Just give all the volleytalk pollsters a condo in Hawaii and season tickets to watch the wahini, so they will always know who won that late Sunday match before they vote.
If you give them all the SAME condo in Hawaii, you could even make a reality TV show out of it.

Many football and basketball coachs have their underlings fill out the weekly polls, it probably happens in volleyball too. Many of these assistants fill out their polls before the conclusion of each weeks games. What do they care? |
