Okay, all you old fogeys, what's the name of that former UH player from the mid- to late-1990s who played at UH for one or two years and then transferred to UC Berkeley? Her name is on the tip of my tongue. It sounds something like "Jasmine Brown" but it's not "Jasmine Brown." I think she was African-American. blah blah blah...Jameka Stevens. Yup. That's it! Jameka Stevens.

blah blah blah...Jameka Stevens. Yup. That's it! Jameka Stevens. Jameka came in the same year as Jessica Sudduth, with I think, higher credentials than Sudduth. But it was apparent pretty quickly that Sudduth would be the one to get significant playing time and Stevens left.

Yup. Speaking of Sudduth, she played for Wade at both Magnum and UH. Then went to coach under him at Pacific.

Watched the livestream for Wagoner's club at the USAV 18's GJNC.
In the first match against Forza, she logged 12 Kills, 7 Digs, 3 Blocks (including a block solo), 2 Aces, and an Assist. In the second match against AZ Storm, she logged 11 Kills, 5 Digs, and 2 Blocks. Both matches played to three sets (in the third set, they played to 15). In the first match, Wagoner hit for a pretty low percentage, and she had a decent amount of errors from hitting wide or hitting into the net. Oddly, against tougher competition, she hit for a better percentage, but I still don't think it was necessarily a high percentage. I understand why some people say Wagoner isn't the terminating hitter at the pins, and I sort of saw that throughout both matches. However, I do think other teams scouted her well, and it felt that she was sort of the "go-to" player for her club team on the outside.
I was surprised to see her in a two-man passing rotation for her club, and for the most part, I would say her passing is solid. She did get aced around three times (once in the first match, twice in the second), and she shanked a few balls, but I thought her passing was serviceable, and it is probably better than Castillo/Sibley in that regard. In the third set of the second match against AZ Storm, I don't know if it could have been from mental pressure, but that was when she got aced and shanked a couple balls. Also, during that third set, I think it was the first time she got blocked, and she hit a couple of balls wide in this set. She did have some nice shots with tipping the ball and tooling the block, which was nice to see. Overall, I think she is a nice option to have at OH2, especially since there will be a little less pressure on her with Rasmussen at OH1.

From your description of what you saw of Wagoner, sounds to me like she is a Granato, or even Olevao, type of player. Not putting either of these players down, just saying Wagoner may be a good OH2 player, just like Granato, and Olevao, would have been good OH2 players, instead of being OH1. But in Granato's, and Olevao's, case they did not have a Rasmussen type player to play the OH1 position.

The Pin Duo of Hellvig and Jolie may go down as one of the best to play for us IMO.
They both have what it takes to be a GO TO OH, and will take so much pressure of the remaining hitters. Skyler will lead the middles nicely, with IMO, westerburg taking that other slot. Wagoner will also fit somewhere. Wether its as a DS (which might be hard since Hannah and Jolie are both 6 RO players, and with Okino. But if Sibley doesnt work out, hanna can go to Opp with Wagoner at OH which is also a stong lineup.
I for one NEVER gave up on last years team, unlike half of you, (I still wish you guys did not come back), but this years team is going to be something special. I can just feel it
Opp will be sibley and I think she also has what it takes to be a presence there. This team is gonna be ranked again, and will bring back the big west crown to us. Wagoner

As evident by the opening post of this thread (which was started during the first week of last season), I gave up on Hawaii last year. LOL.
Hawaii will be a very talented team this upcoming season. They will miss Tita for sure but Hawaii will have the talent to be very strong on the pins. I think their defense will still be good but offensively, they will be worlds better. This team will have the talent to attack from all parts of the court.

Riley is the go to player on her HS and club team. At the next level, her role will probably change. She will be the "Colton Cowell" of the Wahine team. She will be counted on to pass, play defense, and occasionally hit a few balls but she will not be the focus of our offense.
I don't think comparing her to Granato is right. Granato was our go to player and get tons of sets. Rasmussen and Hellvig will probably get the bulk of the out of system sets and Wagoner will be there to maybe get a few to keep the defense honest.
Hoping by her JR. year, she will have improved her strength and conditioning and will be able to jump higher, hit harder and play smarter.

If the Wahine had a player like Rasmussen, there is no way Granato would have been the GoTo player. Granato would have ended up as the OH2. So in that sense you could say Granato would have been like Riley Wagoner. Riley is fortunate to have a player like Rasmussen playing for the Wahine, who can take over the OH1 spot. Granato never had such a player, so she could have been moved to the OH2 position.

Wagoner I just do not see Sibley starting at OPP, unless she has improved 200%. She has to beat out to many girls to start there. Namely, Hellvig, Westerberg, and Akana. Hellvig, if Wagoner shows she can handle the OH2 position. Westerberg, if Igiebe shows that she is able to make the transition to be a D1 Middle. Akana, if she just plainly outplays Sibley at OPP.

Other than that, she starts. I think with the right supporting cast, sibley could make for an all conference Opp

I can see Sibley at Opp as a Chasity Nobriga type OPP.

Sibley making All-Conference is like Burns making All-Conference. It's possible. I was rooting for Burns her entire career but never did I expect her to make All-Conference 1st team. It was a very strange thing. Every time she was on the court, she produced.

Well, you need to get a reality check because those newcomers will have to beat Sibley out, not the other way around. She's a senior with a leg up on Division I volleyball, being coached by Robyn, and working with the team. Rasmussen starts at OH, with Hellvig the other likely starter. Sibley will lead the race on the right. I see her starting at least the opening week, and if the freshmen are as good as you are hyping them to be, I think Robyn will ease them in slowly. Williams has one middle spot, the other probably goes to Westerberg. Igiede will also play, given the lack of depth. Hanawahine is obviously the favorite at libero, as evidenced by the scholarship. I think Okino deserves a shot. I think Wagoner will compete with Gong for playing time in the back row, along with her role as a backup OH.
