Arnott was physically very strong despite her slim frame. She started every match in 2004, and the first few contests in 2005. She sat out a few matches due to illness. During this time, Houston kind of just took over. Mason and Hittle, who were both injured earlier, had also come back. By the time Arnott was OK to play, she couldn't get her starting job back. She went from No. 1 OH to No. 3 or 4. She was on the team as a redshirt in 2006. Shoji said something along the lines of her working to get back to full health and a starting job in 2007. But she would announce at the end of the season that she was retiring and would not be using her final year of eligibility. Thanks for the info. You have a vivid memory. I vaguely remember now her announcement of not returning her final year. Also, Arnott was 1st team All-WAC in 2004.

Westerberg's voice is a lot different than I thought it would be. Also, I don't detect a Canadian accent. I demand to know what's going on here!

Not true. She played in Gustin's place. Her numbers were mediocre at best. I remember the match beween Hawaii and Stanford at the Stanley. She could not put the ball to the floor. He blocking was ok. That was an exciting match to watch, with Kim and Ogonna unloading bombs to the floor. Kahumoku, was the difference maker, the silent killer for the Wahine. IMO, the difference maker in this 2003 match up vs Stanford was Nohea Tano. 13k, 0e. She hit .650 & had 10 digs. Everyone in the building knew that Kim & Lily were gonna get their kills, but Nohea stepped up big time in that match. She was always my favorite Wahine volleyball player, hence my original screen name. Speaking of which I recently seen her & her son Koby out at Ala Moana shopping center, they came into the Starbucks that I work at. 😅 She was a difference maker against against Nebraska in the 2002 Regional in Lincoln I believe!

Thanks for the info. You have a vivid memory. I vaguely remember now her announcement of not returning her final year. Also, Arnott was 1st team All-WAC in 2004. As I recall Arnott had an eating disorder and was dropping a lot of weight. At the time Shoji said that they tried to help her as much as they could but in the end he said he couldn't help her and that he wanted her to concentrate on getting better....

I am confident Hanna at some point this season will get it together and blossom. She is right now at a major disadvantage because of her late arrival, never played open gym with the team very much and is adjusting to new techniques, new surroundings, new ways of doing things and the speed of D1 level volleyball.
From her highlights, she have skills and can play the game. She need a confidence boosters and maybe putting down a few kills will break the ice. I hope she gets some time early. We may need her size to match up with the taller teams. UCLA is going to be tall and so will Washington and Baylor.

She could be a starter before conference season begins.

Where has it been stated that Hanna Hellvig will not be the starting Opposite come the first match of the season? Are you just assuming that she will not be? If you are thinking, praying that Kirsten Sibley will be the starting Opposite, then the Wahine are you BIG Trouble.

Rainbow Wahine seniors feel a sense of urgencyBy Cindy Luis JAMM AQUINO / JAQUINO@STARADVERTISER.COM UH’s Kirsten Sibley has battled injuries throughout her career. JAMM AQUINO / JAQUINO@STARADVERTISER.COM Hawaii’s McKenna Ross is one of two seniors this season.
Everything old is new again when starting a season, even if it is one’s final year. The key is keeping the what-ifs and what-could-have-beens from the past where they belong … in the past. For Hawaii seniors McKenna Ross and Kirsten Sibley, part of the old is in being the oldest members of the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team, being two of the four who have been in the program for four seasons. They also are the last to have played under retired coach Dave Shoji. The new is in it being a new team — a very new team — with nine newcomers on the 16-player roster. Besides five freshmen, four transfers are among those competing for starting roles when Hawaii opens on Aug. 30 against No. 21 San Diego. There’s also a part of “new” for the two outside hitters, Ross at 5-foot-10 and Sibley at 6-2. There’s a re-new-al of purpose when knowing how quickly the next four months will go. “It’s gone crazy fast so far,” Ross said. “I remember the start of freshman year like it was yesterday. “My mind-set hasn’t changed. It’s always been about showing what I have and showing my heart. It’s that it’s my last year to do so.” Ross was originally recruited to play defensive specialist, but her explosiveness was part of the reason she was in the front row and behind the 3-meter line (60 matches, four starts). Sibley has battled injuries to get on the court (45 matches, four starts). Both recognized that this gym is the most competitive in their time in Manoa. “As the coaches have told us, we’re all the same team, but we’re also competing within the team for a starting spot,” said Sibley, a graduate of Campolindo High, the same Moraga, Calif., school as teammate Janelle Gong, a redshirt sophomore defensive specialist, and Rainbow Warriors Patrick Gasman and Gage and Joe Worsley. “There’s definitely been an improvement in everyone’s skills,” said Ross, whose father, Jason, played football and baseball for Hawaii, and aunt Nohea Tano volleyball for the Wahine.”I think we have a little more pressure on us now that we have to have a lineup by the end of the week. “We’re already playing so well as a team. In the past, we were still trying to figure things out in the scrimmage (the traditional end of two-a-day practices). This scrimmage, we’ll be able to go hard the whole time. It makes things more competitive, puts more pressure on everyone to get better. That’s a good thing.” There’s always optimism at the start of a season. After all, every team starts at 0-0. But there is realistic optimism that this will be the best season in coach Robyn Ah Mow’s three years. Will people be surprised? The two seniors, in unison, said: “We’re going to be great.” Note Due to construction in the Stan Sheriff Center, the Wahine’s annual Green-White scrimmage will be in Gym I, where there is no seating. Friday’s scrimmage is closed to the public.

Gasman played at Buchanan High School didn't he? No matter what the starting unit looks like against San Diego, it no doubt will go thru a morphing stage before we end up with something that works. This is a brand new team with huge potential that will make rookie mistakes early on.

I thought Gasman is from somewhere in Fresno, CA, which is located in Central California, while Campolindo is East Bay area (east of Berkeley). That's some wild state busing policy!

Pat is from Central CA. Cindy mistakenly added Pat in with the Worsley brothers because they all played on the youth national team together.
Campolindo High does have a lot of D1;talent. I believe UCLA Sabrina Smith is from Campolindo too.
Going get plenty of reunions next weekend. The reunion of the 4 former Oregon Ducks(Rasmussen, Van Sickle, Hanawahine and USD’s Camryn Tastad) and Campolindo’s Janelle Gong, Kirsten Sibley and UCLA Sabrina Smith. Going be fun to them battle.
