No joke.
WSU wins 34-32, 30-25, 18-30, 22-30, 17-15.
Burdine 35 kills, 12 digs not enough. Candelas has 16 killls (.536) with 8 blocks, 6 digs. Venski chips in 15 kills. USC hits .288 as a team.
Todd has 21 kills, 11 blocks for WSU. Rosin has 18 kills, 12 digs, while Kelley has 17 kills. Cougars hit .251 and out-blocks USC 17-12.
Fifth game looks like an offensive display. WSU hits .458 with 14 kills, while USC has 11 kills for .391 in the final game.

One more note - Adams held to just one block in five games.

Pretty amazing! Both teams hit quite well. USC outscored WSU by double-digits, but were outdug and outblocked. Only 300 or so fans. It seems Florian hardly played. Can anyone provide more info to put this upset into perspective?

375 fans to be precise (most of them still home on Thanksgiving break I think). A disappointing number for the last game of the year, but I think the win makes up for that. I think WSU came from behind in every single win. I think the single most important factor was the Cougs reducing their hitting errors and USC having a ton (actually only a six error differential, but Coug confidence was up). Also, WSU spread the ball around. Jen Todd had 21 kills, Kelly Rosin had 18, Kristin Kelly had 17, Jen Barcus had 14. USC only had two players in double digits going into the fifth game (Burdine and Candelas). Intangible factor: Senior night for Alison Billingsley and Stacey Holbrook of WSU. Fans rushed the court after the win and joined in the celebration. Let me know if you have anymore questions! Go Cougs!

Can anyone provide more info to put this upset into perspective? I believe it means Stanford has sole possession of 2nd place in the Pac-10 and will (most likely) get a Top 8 seed. USC will (most likely) not get a Top 8 seed and finishes 3rd. Not sure about any other implications, will leave that up to other posters. BTW, welcome back WSUsuperfan...we missed you!

This trend is certainly worrisome for USC -- winning big on first night only to fall to supposedly easier opponent the next night. I don't know whether this is because of the team/coaches underestimating the opposite teams or simply the inability of the team to show up on the second night. Clearly, the team is having a difficult time in focusing for big back-to-back matches, and if they keep up this trend, they certainly would not go far into the postseason.

One more interesting stat: WSU had 0 solo blocks and 34 assisted. USC had 6 solos and 12 assisted.
If you look at the box score, USC won in terms of kills, serving and digs. The only categories they came up short were hitting errors and total blocks. CRAZY.
But then again, it IS Bohler Gym. And this WAS senior night.

This is one of the most shocking results that I can remember. WSU is just so short of players this year after all that transpired in the offseason; it is amazing to think they could take down the sixth ranked team in the country. I actually did think the thread was a joke. I guess it shows that strange things can happen in Pullman. A lot of teams have gone there in football as well and come out with an unexpected loss. I hope this will be a building block for WSU, and it is great that the seniors will have a great memory from their tough last year at WSU. Congrats to the Cougs and all their fans.

Actually, it's totally irrevelent. First, USC didn't have a boatload of fans on this board claiming that their team should have been #1 and taking offense when other posters expressed alternate opinions. Second, your argument reads like an embezzler at B of A saying "Well, the guy at Citi Bank embezzled $10,000,000 and I only stole $5,000,000 so everyone should just ignore what I did now.
simplycurious[/glow] link=board=general&thread=1101616749&start=13#0 date=1101624638] What!? How come she didn't travel with the team to Pullman!?
Sounds pretty simple to me. There was no way she was playing, so the SC coaching staff gave her the OK to spend Thanksgiving at home with her family. Either that, or she went AWOL.
