Thanks for your input Gwangipal.
The battle between Cal State Northridge and Kansas St ought to be a good match. I think if CSUN doesn't dwell too much on their mistake they'll do just fine. KSU by now knows who our go-to hitter is(Jen Ryan) and I wouldn't be too surprised if they triple block her even if she runs all the way to the right side to hit a step out/slide set. Whatever was ailing them after their five game meltdown loss at UCI(Irvine) which started their downslide I hope it doesn't show up tonight and if it does - well, they're out the door and done for the season. When the going is good for CSUN the seven seniors play well but when there is a stop in their moementum they have a hard time picking it up and then they start to trip over themselves. CSUN didn't do well last year in first round action against LMU at USC and I'm sure this team now knows how to play in NCAA Tournament action.
The one thing that bothers me about CSUN is that they have a large lead and then they settle down and when they do or if they do tonight against KSU, KSU will start chipping away at their lead and then they're in reach to tie or to take the lead in the game. Sometimes CSUN has been in that situation and they lost the game - hopefully it won't happen against the Wildcats.
To me this match will go in two directions...it will go to five very tight games with long rallies(CSUN is better in winning long rallies this year), short leads and maybe a comeback from behind to win a game(CSUN has done that in the past this season) and if CSUN is behind and win a game they usually carry that momentum onto the next game. CSUN can hang and challenge a team no matter how ugly it looks and win in five games.
If CSUN doesn't play their game - they'll lose by a very wide margin in...three and I hope it does not come down to that.
When the top ref blows his/her whistle at 5 PM I'll soon find out what CSUN team is on the court.
Matadors - I asked the local lady in the neighborhood who is into Santeria to light some candles for you for good luck, heck I even lit candles at the local Catholic church and Bhuddhist temple too and this morning I put on my lucky lip balm and listened to my favorite techno/house/tribal mix cd's it might help - ya never know. Play hard ladies and good luck.
Go Matadors!
Kansas State versus CSUN is not about which conference is better. The Big 12 is. And UCI beating Missouri in an "upset" last year doesn't show that the Big West was better then either. It's just two teams out of two conferences.
KSU is the favorite, but what makes this match a strong upset possibily is that the Wildcats are such a different road team this season from their home stands performances. I think their hitting differential home and away in the Big 12 is something like -.146, which is real big. The percentage of games lost away in the Big 12 is just one fewer than they've won.
The early season performances of both teams at Colorado was miserable, and CSUN had the better hitting percentage (while CU hit better against CSUN).
So, do we get the Wildcats who lost two of their three last away matches (and escaped with a 3-2 win at Baylor, which was the only thing close to a win the Bears had in their last five home matches) and were 6-4 over their last 10 matches, OR do we get a devastating team with four Big 12 all stars?
And with CSUN, will we see the team that beat Pacific by a similar score to their Stanford match the night before and beat Long Beach, or will we watch the team that struggled with SMU at home and lost at home to Cal Poly and CSU Fullerton late in the season?
I think KSU could beat CSUN 7 of 10, but K-State does not typically play well on the road and CSUN wins more on the road than they lose (against generally weaker competition than KSU's).
But if KSU goes mental on the road and CSUN plays as they did at Long Beach and Pacific...
