Hooray for the Big 10, for picking setters and liberos. It's nice to see those players get the respect they deserve. I'm often amazed at how few setters or defensive players are recognized on all conference and all american teams. Congrats to all those recognized, well deserved.

It is possible that Kelly Bowman from MN was chosen as much for her front row offense as she was for her setting ability. K-Bow adds a great dimension to the Gopher attack.

It isn't possible, it's the truth. Taatjes sets a better ball than Bowman usually. Bowman's all-around capabilities are certainly what landed her a spot on the All Big Ten team, and rightfully so.

How good is Bowman as an attacker, really? I mean, the Badgers held her under .600 in the match the Gophers lost in Madison.

The only one I might have an issue with is Gemalski on the first team. Of course, they probably needed someone to prop for Michigan, and no one else was worth it. Do they have a policy of not putting freshmen on the all-big ten team (leaving them for the All -Freshman team)? Congrats to Kim M., who IIRC was not even listed as a pre-season honorable mention.

How good is Bowman as an attacker, really? I mean, the Badgers held her under .600 in the match the Gophers lost in Madison. Exactly! If she hadn't been dogging it that night, and hit .700 or so, the Gophers would have won. And been Big10 co-champs. Seriously, I think Botaatjes should have made it as a single entity. Lindsey Taatjes has to be one of the most underappreciated VB players in the country. Not that I don't think KBow deserved 1st team, 'cuz I do. This is Bug's resume for her last 6 years as a starting setter: 1998-2000 Class A State Champs 2002 Big10 title (first year as starter, replacing Olympian Lindsey Berg) 2003 Final 4 2004 Top 4 seed and ?? We're going to miss her. That's for sure.

I totally agree that Lindsey is underappreciated.
I actually think she's worthy of AA consideration for everything she does that impacts how well the Gophers play.
She's a very good setter, but this year she's also been asked to take on front row attacking assignments and been asked to cover left side defense for the rotations the MB serves before being replaced by Paula in the back row. Both of which Lindsey has done extremely well.
On an only slightly related note I've heard that she's on target to graduate this semester, or in 3 1/2 years.
Perhaps there is something about Gopher setters with the name Lindsey. They seem to be underappreciated and graduate early.
I believe the Gophers will indeed miss her both on and off the court next year.

Somebody got the shaft in All Freshmen Team. I did not see all these kids play, but I'm going to use some data (stats) to show my point. Name Kills/Kills game/Hit %/digs/digs game/aces/blocks Hynds 204/2.68/.304/N-A/.91/13/100 Bruz 319/2.98/.278/257/2.4/39/38 Stevens 294/2.83/.244/300/2.88/32/45 Price 385/3.93/.235/195/1.99/20/41 Not included: Meyers 306/2.97/.309/N-A/.67/16/110 Setters: Assts/Asst game/aces/digs/digs game/blocks/kills Simpson 1155/12.98/8/161/1.81/66/73 Griffin 1324/12.98/24/222/2.18/41/64 Now I'm going to rank the hitters between each other in each category Hynds 5/5/2/5/4/5/2 > 28/7=4.00 Bruz 2/2/4/2/2/1/5 > 18/7=2.57 Stevens 4/4/4/1/1/2/3 > 19/7=2.71 Price 1/1/5/3/3/3/4 > 20/7=2.85 Meyers 3/3/1/5/5/4/1 > 22/7=3.14 Now I'm ranking the setters in each category Simpson 2/1/2/2/2/1/1 > 11/7=1.57 Griffin 1/1/1/1/1/2/2 > 9/7= 1.28 I know there are more categories that can be included and some intangibles, but the bottom line Meyers got the short end of the stick Price did a good job hitting but was not better overall than Stevens. Wonder what the coaches used to come up with their voting....hope it is not like HS! Sometimes you wonder how much value a recognition like this is worth. ESTRELLA

if we are going by stats, then why not Penn State's Melissa Walbridge??...She was tied for first in hitting % and led the conference in blocking...not saying that she is an automatic selection to the team but that's a heck of an accomplishment for a freshman.
does anybody who has been around longer know if a freshman has done that before?

Since we are apparently not going by stats why is Kaleena Walters not the defensive player of the year? Paula is great but what Kaleena did for Penn State year (they won the Big Ten) was far more impressive then the theatrics out there in Minnesota!
