I believe the Wolverines vb team play in Cliff Keen Arena? I've never been there...not once. I've been to the IM building many times to play racquetball, but not Cliff Keen. I don't even remember a Cliff Keen Arena when I went to the IM building. I don't even remember the name "Cliff Keen." It's as if it magically appeared even though it says the arena was built in 1956. The funny (and by funny, I mean terrible) thing about Cliff Keen is that it was originally the Matt Mann Pool. Yes, our volleyball team plays in a refurbished natatorium. For a University with the athletic budget of Michigan, it's an absolute embarrassment. Cliff Keen was Michigan's legendary long time wrestling coach (1925-1970). Wrestling, volleyball and gymnastics moved into the arena after the Canham Natatorium opened in 1988. Cliff Keen is not without its charms. For fans, it's nice being so close to the court regardless of where you sit and it makes for an intimidating atmosphere for opponents. But with every B1G team around us recruiting with a sparkly new arena to show off, it is well past time for the University to get a new volleyball facility funded and built.

Here's a vintage shot of our volleyball arena for you Wolfgang : I don't remember there being a swimming pool near the IM building. LOL! Like I said, I used the IM building a lot for racquetball.

I took a look at the Google Street View of the Cliff Keen Arena area and the IM Building looks exactly the way I remember it from the 1980s, but the corner of State St/Hoover (where Weidenbach Hall is located) and further down State St (softball and other athletic complex) are utterly unrecognizable. There must've been lots of changes over the years. Of course, State St is still as dumpy as ever.

Cliff Keen (Matt Mann Pool) was a tacky 1950's add-on to the east end of the gorgeous and classic IM building. Weidenbach is another poorly conceived addition that houses the Michigan ticket office. They should really tear all of that ugly mess down and install a nicer pedestrian plaza as an entrance way to the old track, IM Building and baseball field. But that area south along State Street also contains one of my favorite secret spots on campus. Between Weidenbach Hall and the newer Ross Academic Center, the University saved the original gate entrance to Ferry Field, the football team's home between 1906 and the opening of Michigan Stadium in 1927. The track behind the IM Building is essentially the location of the old football field. And it's also the same track where Jesse Owens famously set 4 World Records in what some consider the " Greatest 45 Minutes Ever In Sports". A few years ago, the University threatened to remove the track and replace it with a parking lot. The community nearly rioted over that proposal. Terrific history and memories around that corner, Wolfgang. I had no idea that you spent time there. We might very well have run across each other on the racquetball courts in the IM Building in those days!

I was also a grad TA and taught 2 sections every semester -- EE and math. Maybe you were one of my students? Sorry for the C+. I gave everybody C+/B-. Anyway, the campus was a lot of fun. UM was EXACTLY how I thought college life should've been like. I lived as a boarder in one of the frat houses because it was cheap and they offered a meal plan (not so good!). I also used CCRB a lot for racquetball and jogged around the campus every other day. Ann Arbor was pretty awesome. But I haven't been back since the 1980s.

I never followed any of the Wolverine teams while I was there. Sorry. The buildings were damn impressive though.

Michigan swept Eastern Michigan in two games of best 2 out of 3. Michigan started off in what I assume to be their starting line up in the fall. OH: Sydney Wetterstrom, Paige Jones MB: Kayla Bair, Kiara Shannon RS: Katarina ... S: Mckenzie Welsh L: Natalie Smith This starting line up looks very good, Syd was dominate throughout the entire match, she doesn't run as quick of an attack from middle back, but her power makes up for it, she has big time power. Paige Jones seemed to struggle offensively the whole night, got stuff a couple times and in the net, her service runs were amazing though. Went on big runs with the top spin. Grace Perrson and Abbey Malinowski saw little to no time on the pin but didn't make much impression. Kayla Bair was VERY dominant, she was handily the most secure middle. Kiara did show huge stride in her offense, her slide attacks were impressive but couldn't get enough hands up. Cori was out, icing her knee the entirety of the night. Katarina was very strong on the right pin, Mark saw what we all saw during the BYU regional and that was Kat is a beast as OPP. She played around 65% of the time split with frosh Lizzie Sadilek, Lizzie was VERY impressive. You could tell she is a west coast girl in her swings, very reminiscent of Lexi Sun's swing. But she was very big and at one point, Mark assigns welsh to only set her if she can help it and Lizzie impressed! I hope Lizzie can see some playing time or redshirt this season so we can have her full strength and playing for 3 straight years. Libero was alright, no jenna lerg but could contend with the liberos of big ten beside PSU and Wisco. Welsh i believe is only setter on the roster and did her job, wasn't too impressive though, but its only a spring match. The DS's on deck will probably be played sparingly but passing has improved for the OHs, although blocking is still a bit of an issue in the sense of not being as terminal. Serve receive was rough against a weak school, so I think that's their biggest concern or the mightiest of the big ten will eat them alive. If anything changes between now and the regular season will be, depending if everyone is healthy. Crocker takes over for Kiara and Bair is given duties as M2, as she's very terminal on the slide and better blocker. If Kat goes down, Sadilek will do great.
I say also, redshirt Robinson, get her good reps behind the scenes and put her in the same class as Mruzik, those two will be dynamo together. Also, I hope they look into getting granted a medical redshirt year or redshirting this season for Lizzie as Kat has the OPP pos down, but Lizzie is an exciting player to have going for full seasons rather than wasted ones.
Feel free to ask any questions beside score bc i have no clue

Set scores vs. Eastern Michigan: Match 1 25-15;25-11 Match 2 25-18;25-18 Radio replay (featuring Jenna Lerg doing color) can be found here. Syd had 11 kills on 17 swings (by my count) in Match 1. Jones, Glavinic and Welsh gave EMU fits on the serve all night. Jones is improving in the back row which is a good sign. Both middles were active offensively, block is still lacking. That could once again be a huge liability for Blue this season. Everyone saw the court tonight. Sadilek was set about 12 times in a row in the last set, lol. Love Cassie Haut from Eastern, terminal hitter when she gets a decent set.

Looks like Michigan will play Dayton on the road on September 7 at 7PM, with potential matches against Northern Illinois and Missouri that Friday and Saturday. Starting to fill out at least a portion of the schedule.
