This next stretch of games on the road is going to be a bear. I'll be happy if we can go 1-2. Agreed. Fortunately, the schedule for the last half of the season looks very favorable (at least on paper).

Shout out to our AD, Josh Whitman, for rarely missing a home volleyball match. And, he stays through the whole match. I am no longer surprised to see him at volleyball matches, although I am surprised when he's at Huff following an early Saturday morning football game like last Saturday vs. Michigan. The football game was at 11am, and I am certain AD Whitman was at Memorial Stadium much earlier than that. He was in the stands at Huff prior to the 7pm start time for the volleyball match. and stayed to the end. Luckily for Whitman, Illinois won 3-0. Volleyball match attendance has been a regular thing for Whitman since he became our AD in 2016. His wife also almost always accompanies him which says something for her since she now has a 3 year old and a fairly new baby at home. I am told that Josh's parents are the older couple that sit right behind him at matches. Whitman attends most home athletic events unless there is a conflict. Often times there are multiple teams playing at the same time. He also travels with the football team so misses home events when football is on the road. His parents attend some of the matches but the couple sitting behind him at volleyball is Dr. and Mrs. Easter, former president of the university.

Coach Tamas's parents have also moved to CU. I wonder if Grandma and Grandpa Tamas were still living in Santa Barbara, California, when they decided to move across the country (I believe ostensibly to help out with their grandkids). I remember listening to a local radio interview earlier this season with Coach Tamas and his wife, Volunteer Asst. Coach Jen Tamas. One of the first things Jen said in the interview was a thank-you to her in-laws for helping out with the Tamas children.

Having never heard of the Prairie Farm Student-Athlete of the week I went to google. It appeared that all of the athletes listed were from SIUE. While Ashlyn is certainly deserving, they do know she goes to UIUC, don’t they?

I'm sure that the grandkids play a big role (though they have other grand kids in CA). Dad is a 'retired' academic, though he still does some consulting work. He can likely do that from IL. as well as from CA. One can sell a house in CA and buy something comparable (they bought on the same block as Chris) and likely live on the difference in price.

Not only does Whitman go to home matches but he went to the opening away tournaments the last two years (not sure about this year). I think he has the right approach for the dept, investing in facilities and raising the bar. Hopefully he will survive having to replace Lovie as we will need his support to hang on to Tamas when Nebraska comes calling after Cook retires.

Thomas and his wife are an asset to where ever the couple select to devote themselves to. Having said that, I am not sure the couple of years Thomas spent in Lincoln is enough to vault him over Dani B., especially if Nebraska is looking for a female coach for a female sport & bring along other female greats who built the empire. In a truly hypothetical dream world, Nebraska would get Dani to HC, Jordan Larson & Kayla Banwarth to AC and Kelly Hunter to Dir of Opps and then have Sarah Pavan as Beach Coach and actually go full boar into beach instead of just half season. Maybe even enable Pavan an AC with Gina Mancuso.

Maybe even enable Pavan an AC with Gina Mancuso. Just a wild guess here, but I'm betting that Illinois fans hope you're right. I don't think that the two years Tamas spent in Lincoln would be enough to vault him over Dani B...but the next two years he spent crushing Louisville twice and making it to the FF and almost beating NE itself in the semis might. No disrespect to the truly great NE players you mentioned, but looking strictly on experience as a head coach, Tamas looks like he's on track to be building an empire wherever he settles. Also a comment about AD Whitman. He just may be the key to keeping Tamas at Illinois. There appears to be a special bond between the two of them. Anyone who has coached knows that's a big deal having someone (in both directions) that you like, who shares your passion for the ultimate goal, and who you can count on to have your back no matter what. Shared sacrifices, shared quest might just be the final determinant here.
