Once again a very sad commentary on the U$C UCLA, volleyball situation when it is the LONG BEACH PRESS-TELEGRAM that covers the teams and not the LOS ANGELES TIMES doing it.....They are fortunate that there is a paper in a near-by city, LONG BEACH, that gives volleyball the coverage that their own papers don't see fit to give!

I have been wondering about that for years. Not only does the Press cover womens volleyball; it sometimes puts articles about it on its front page.

It looks like this article originated in the Daily News, a paper in the San Fernando Valley. It has the same parent company as the Press-Telegram.
Notice how the story mentions the finals being at the Pyramid?

To me it makes sense that the Press Telegram covers LBSU volleyball, men's or women's...look at it this way at least they're getting coverage and it's better than nothing. I do see your point that the major daily paper, Los Angeles Times should cover volleyball for the most well known L.A. Div I school, but they don't and we pretty much know the reason why and even if we do write to the sports editor(I know I do to the Daily News and Ventura County Star - doesn't seem to do much good) to have more sports coverage on volleyball action they won't until more fans/readers demand it. It's just that simple. I did write to the Daily News two months ago why they don't have a report for CSUN and they told me that there isn't enough reports and it's up to the sports information directo to tell them(Daily News) to call/fax CSUN's resulst. They told me by e-mail they hardly get any information from them(CSUN). Seems to me the Daily News and CSUN SID are passing the bucket between themselves. In addition I did bring it to their attention on Monday why there was no mention of CSUN being selected to play in this year's tournament and what was their reason for not even a word about CSUN or the other four L.A. teams that are in the tournament(I can speculate - most of the coverage was on NFL, Lakers/Clippers, prep football and x-country and of course the annual rivalry football game between UCLA and USC). I have yet to get a reply. So, if you want the local papers to have more coverage about your volleyball team just keep on writing to the paper and the sports information director as well.

I'm surprised that the PT did not have an article by their volleyball beat reporter. How weird. I envy Hawai'i and Pacific - at least they have reporters who do a terrific coverage on their men's and women's vball teams. The News Press(Santa Barbara) use to do a good job but now it's down to mediocre.

Just curious, but doesn't the announcer at the volleyball matches (both men's and women's) announce that the Daily News is a proud sponsor of CSUN athletics?
Pretty sad . . .

The Newspaper Group that owns the Long Beach Press-Telegram also owns the South Bay Breeze, the Daily News, and the Pasadena Star News....they commonly run articles in their papers written by reporters or columnists from the other papers. LBSU is fortunate to have the Long Beach Press-Telegram, it is also blessed with an athletic department that puts out press releases and makes calls to keep the team in the news. At UCSB the lack of enthusiasm (or plain lack of care) by some in the athletic department for Volleyball is evident. A poster for the Volleyball team placed around Santa Barbara & Goleta would be a great start.

Sad? It's just reality. My little local newspaper covers high school volleyball in detail. The San Diego paper does not. It's the same thing. UCLA and USC football and basketball are covered by the LA Times. Volleyball, cross country, track, rowing, gymnastics, etc. are not. The LA Times can't cover all these sports.

The Daily News is a proud(?) sponsor of the CSUN sports and I still find it to be a bit queer that the p.a. announcer tells the dozen fans to read the scores/results in the paper and yet the Daily News doesn't even print it(well they will for tomorrow's edition because I saw Jill Painter at Lyon Center tonight). I brought this up to the sports informaton director's attention and he got all miffed that he is not doing a terrible job(most likely didn't appreciate that an actual CSUN fan had the balls to tell him that he's not doing a good job and questioning his job performance too and that it's not his problem that the Daily News is not reporting the results or about a player - it's up to the editor and a Daily News editor e-mailed me that they're not receiving anything from CSUN. Like I said in a previous post - they're just passing the bucket. To me as sports info director you're in a similiar role/job position in public relations and that you woulk do whatever you can to get the most press/media attention for the team, player and coaches. It's just good p.r. for them, the school and the sport too.

Maybe the LB Press Telegram wants to cover USC and UCLA vball news since there have not been much excitement over LBSU's team over the last 3 years. Anyway, LB paper is indeed doing a good job covering local sports news. Some coverage is better than no coverage at all.
