I had a question about Jennifer Joines that I was hoping you might be able to answer for me. Do you know how well recruited Joines was at the time she was in high school? Did she just develop very well under Dunning or was she just one of those "can't miss" recruits coming out of high school? Thanks.

My info may not be accurate but I do remember reading an article about Joines in Volleyball mag. She was known as "noodle arms"(?) and her club team was quite bad that it did not get much notice. The class of Joines, Ortega, Smith and Swails was ranked second by VM behind the Ross, Anderson etc class. Ortega was supposed to be the star of the Pacific recruits, she started at MB in the beginning of the season but did not play well, Joines took it over and make it her own and a new star was borned. Smith transferred after Dunning left, Ortega left too( she was supposed to played for CSU SLO last year but it did not worked out either) and Swails could not played much dued to injuries

My info says that Joines played on a club team at City Beach, althought I'm not sure which particular team. I believe she played with Hayley Anderson there (I though Anderson played for Dave Gambelin at City Beach and St Francis). The following article mentions it: www.volleyballmag.com/1103/joines.htmlOh - after tonight's Cal-Pacific match I saw a tall blonde woman looking through to stands at Haas Pavilion for a lost item. I thought she was Joines, but asked if she was a former player. I then said, "#6 right? You must be Jennifer Joines." I asked if she was recruited by Cal (the answer was yes). I think I saw her with asst coach Lee Maes on a recruiting visit in early '99 at halftime during a men's basketball game.

Jen was known as "noodle" arms. She played initially for a, shall we say, uhh.... mediocre club team. Then she transferred to City Beach, played with Hayley, etc etc.
Jaima Ortega was recruited, I believe, as an outside. She didn't adjust well to college life. Let's leave it at that. She was well touted by VB mag, although I don't know for sure that she was Pacific's primary recruit. Jen started right away, and Jaima was left on the bench from the beginning.
Misty Swails had an outstanding freshman year. Then back injuries plagued the rest of her career at Pacific. She didn't even suit up her senior year.
Mary Lauren Smith was supposed to replace Jennica Smith on the right side. Dern Dunning left and so did MLS. Grrrrr.
Oh yes, Jen was at the match tonite.

A part of that odd NebrJrs 2 UOP pipeline (albeit small).
JamieHamm, MLS (even though she was from Missouri) AshleyGroothuis
MLS eventually transferred to U of Mizzou and did quite well.

Jen played for a small club until her junior year. Her junior & senior years she played with Hayley at City Beach (Jen was young enough to play 16s as a junior, then 18s as a senior). By her junior year at Presentation and City Beach, it was pretty clear she was on her way to being something special, but she was definitely a late bloomer.
She got to know John D. early on (the AD at Presentation, who was also the City Beach club director, coached Elsa Stegemann in high school, and went way back with John), and she really liked John. She committed pretty early, before most other coaches figured out who she was, or how good she would be (I think it was about the middle of her junior season of club). She was a Volleyball Magazine 3rd-team AA as a senior in high school, and was CCS player of the year, so by then she was fairly "can't miss", but not so much when she committed. I think all 4 recruits were actually Fab 50. I thought Ortega might be the best of them when they were coming in, but Joines was well on her way to greatness too.

A friend of mine who watches Bay Area volleyball saw Detmer, Kerri Walsh and Joines at a local mall. He said hello to them and then: "how are the NCAA champions"?

Could a player like Joines have transfered to Stanford to play under Dunning? Has anything like that ever happened before? Is that illegal since the coach at the school she would be transfering from would have a say in giving the okay?

I'm not putting her down (I love the girl to death), but that's the truth of the matter.
