It is pretty interesting that there are no Mid-West or East Coast dudes on this list. You are missing soooooo many quality kids. Any takers?

Its probably because many of us live in SoCal and don't have enough access to those kids. Who is missing? Who will rise in college - outside of the top 10. Here are few others McPhillips is really strong in the middle and a great athlete. He is a bit undersized at the next level. However, I can see him making an good impact. James Hartley Princeton will be strong. However, he is probably in the top 10 or even top 5. Zach Schneider at Long Beach State. Again could argue he is in the top 10. Gavin Julien in the Middle BYU will be strong Justin Howard Ohio State has emerged as one of the best middles in the class Merrick McHenry UCLA on the right our left is a tremendous athlete Nathan Lietzke Stanford - tall athletic setter. All of these players should make a difference.

Overall yes Cali volleyball is Cali volleyball, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t Midwest or east coast talent that wouldn’t be studs on the west coast teams. Plenty of great athletes just as good as west coast kids

Akbar you hit it right on the head. I agree that the big numbers are in California. But like Akbar pointed the numbers are changing. Also, where have the last 5 out of 7 Natl. Champions come from??

While I would agree that there is a greater density of elite volleyball talent in California, particularly Southern California, to suggest that there is no elite level talent outside of that region is just disrespectful (at best). The arrogance sometimes on some of these threads just blows me away.

The arrogance sometimes on some of these threads just blows me away. It’s not the opinion of everyone in CA. I started this thread to help ID those players we don’t know about yet who haven’t landed on a “top player in the class” list. Especially interested in those players outside CA! Keep the names coming. Let’s see who has a good recruiting eye.

Boys volleyball has approximately 61,000 participants nation-wide (24 states). Roughly 34% of all volleyball participants and 35% of all hosting schools are located in California. Therefore, there are approximately 20,790 boys volleyball players in California. I get that in California the culture is more volleyball-friendly and it is many times year-round. But saying Cali kids are just better volleyball players is a gross over-generalization. It would be akin to saying that because China has more doctors, Chinese people are smarter (In fact, a country with 1 billion people is bound to have more doctors than a country with 320 million people).

I'm from Socal, but I definitely do not subscribe to the argument that socal kids are somehow inherently better. it's understandable that b/c there is a greater density of high school programs/clubs/players in the area, socal produces better high school and club teams. this is hardly controversial. But when we are talking about individual players and potential to be elite, this is an entirely different conversation. the guys on our national team are considered some of the best players in the world at their position. this level of elite is produced by a combination of many things, including exposure to volleyball, coaching, and physical attributes.
there's a strong argument that exposure to volleyball and coaching is concentrated in Hawaii and California, but the distribution of size and athleticism isn't concentrated anywhere. Socal club teams can win JO's for the next 50 years, but it doesn't mean our national team will be populated by players from those teams.
