It looked like Rutgers had just 3 players on the bench tonight vs OSU?? The team did something naughty and there will be rolling suspensions for the next couple of matches.

Rutgers Athletics Announces Change To Volleyball Leadership Story LinksPISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers University Director of Athletics announced that the contract of head women's volleyball coach CJ Werneke will not be renewed. Werneke spent 12 seasons as the head coach guiding the program through the transition from the Big East to the American and the Big Ten. "We would like to thank CJ for his time and service at Rutgers and his dedication to our student-athletes, including navigating the program through conference realignment to join the nation's best volleyball conference," said Director of Athletics Pat Hobbs. "After evaluating the program, I felt a change in leadership was appropriate at this time." In addition to competing at the highest level on the court, Werneke's teams established elite academic standards off the court having received four consecutive NCAA Academic Recognitions for ranking in the top 10 percent nationally in multi-year APR scores and six straight seasons with an APR score of 1000. Under Werneke, Rutgers also earned back-to-back AVCA Team Academic Awards and last year boasted five Scarlet Knights earning Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Awards for grade-point averages of 3.7 or higher. Prior to arriving at Rutgers, Werneke won four consecutive MAAC regular season titles at Fairfield, joining the Stags after spending 1999-01 as an assistant coach at Rutgers under Anne Leonard-House. A national search will begin immediately. You would think getting the team's first conference win in four years would've saved his job.

Not to mention the most B1G wins ever for the program, and improving from a below-average Division I team to above average (by both Pablo and RPI). I consider Rutgers the B1G most improved team for 2019, honestly.

i actually feel kind of bad for him. he built up this team to an average d1 team and he is rewarded with getting fired. that’s crazy

So long as Rutgers has its current VB facilities, who the coach is won’t matter. The B1G is the NFL of college volleyball. Rutger’s volleyball is operating in Pop Warner mode. Nebraska plays in front of +8000 fans every single home match and Rutgers plays home matches in front 200-300 fans. IOWA, Ohio State and Northwestern have new facilities. Rutgers plays matches in equivalent to a high school gym . . . in from of 158 fans. How can they compete? But hey, get rid of the coach, that will solve all the problems. . . Ay yi yi. . .

As of last year it was also the lowest paid coach in the B1G.
I think their working on the facilities but given the crazy improvement it seems insane to fire him this year. I wonder if there was other stuff going on from earlier in the season...

Part of the problem is the sport just isn’t as popular in that part of the country so you’re not gonna get the locals that other B1Gs get.

I have always been impressed by the Rutgers players. They have fought the good fight every time I saw them despite being overmatched in most conference games. They seemed to have hit on a good recruiting niche for them with European players, so I wonder what happens to that pipeline now?
