“As long as USA Volleyball doesn’t tell us no, we’re going to keep showing up.”
So... why would USA Volleyball be against it?

Also, what is the draw to snow volleyball? I could see it being kinda fun if you were playing in really powdery fluffy snow, but wouldn’t it all be packed down after the first match? Wouldn’t the chance of injury any rocket as players are slipping around and trying to jump and land on hard packed snow?

I would guess you’ll probably see more broken wrists or injuries as a result of a slip and fall but you’d certainly see less ligament tears than on a court surface.

“As long as USA Volleyball doesn’t tell us no, we’re going to keep showing up.” So... why would USA Volleyball be against it? Last year, USAV sponsored this group of women to attend a snow tournament in Moscow, which they won. It appears this group of women this year were solicited directly by Tour sponsors to play this year w/o USAV sponsorship. I believe Cook was deferring to USAV, recognizing the part they've played in promotion and support. There is some effort to get the sport into the Olympics.

I dunno, landing on a slippery surface sounds like a prime way to tear and ACL

I dunno, landing on a slippery surface sounds like a prime way to tear and ACL It can obviously happen. With any athletic event there’s an opportunity to injure yourself in a variety of ways. And I don’t blame anyone for thinking “slick surface = greater chance for injury”. To put it very simply, the more traction you get on your base of support, the more likely you are to put pressure on lower extremity joints that cause tears and strains. The less traction, the less pressure.

As per a webcast, USA had issues the first tournament (lost bag, forgot the cleats- can't remember) so they purchased soccer cleats once they were in Russia. That is exactly what they are doing. Volleyball is HUGE during olympic years. It makes sense that they are trying to bring volleyball to the winter olympics.

FYI, this is currently being broadcast on NBC's Olympic Channel. USA vs Russia in the women's gold medal final.
