So, I'm not currently a DI athlete nor are any of my kids DI athletes now. (They're in their 20s and early 30s) This transfer portal stuff is new. Here are some questions:
1. Apparently, only certain university administrators (e.g., NCAA compliance officers) have access. Do coaches have access? (I'm assuming they do, otherwise how would they know which players are officially available as transfers unless they're relying on some administrator providing them with a spreadsheet.) Maybe there are layers of access (e.g., read-only, write, read-only some info not all) depending on who you are?
2. Do the student-athletes who are in the portal have access? (I'm assuming they don't. I see no reason why they should have access to the names of all the other student-athletes who are interested in transferring.)
3. Is this portal found in a secure NCAA server and not on the web?
4. Could someone provide a screenshot of what this portal looks like? (Both the front page and a sample inside page of the database itself.)
5. In some other sports, notably football and basketball, various websites dedicated to their sport (e.g., 247sports) try to provide info on the players listed in the transfer portal, essentially mirroring the portal database, specific to their sport. I don't see why VT doesn't do the same. There are always posts along the lines of "Yes, so-and-so is listed in the transfer portal but I will not tell you who else is" or "I know who's in the portal but I don't want to say who until that student-athlete announces it first herself via social media." I hate those posts. Should we provide a volleyball transfer portal thread that essentially mirrors the info in the official transfer portal itself?

We can only assume the NCAA does not want Enormous State University fans to know player X is trying to transfer and then have something go wrong and she stays. Awkward.

And if a thread is setup to do this, it will violate your thought in item #2.

I have a question semi-related to #2, call it #2b: can players put themselves into the portal by themselves, for any reason, without any approval or notification to any official at the current school?
Reason for asking: at the end of the day, the point of the portal was to allow players to "put themselves out there" to potential new schools. Like "hey, I want to play somewhere else, is anyone interested?". So on one hand, it would make sense that you wouldn't want athletes to have to go through a gatekeeper at the school to be able to enter themselves into the database.
But on the other hand, I could see where it might not be right that a school/program could get blindsided ... a player that they were counting on for next season suddenly is in the portal without telling anyone, and giving the coach (or whomever) a chance to "fix" the issues.

I believe that other administrators could have access but I don't see why they would want to. Compliance staff definitely has access. I think that only compliance staff have write access and that they communicate with coaches about particulars of any athletes from their school that appear (will they support a waiver or not, will they support an in-conference transfer where applicable). 2. I don't think that S-As have access. They contact compliance staff at their institution and the staff add them into the portal. 3. It is on the web but requires a login, which the NCAA or someone else must approve. 4. No. 5. Athletics staff members at many institutions have been warned against posting on message boards regarding transfers, particularly the "we are looking for" type of posts. Commenting on the status of potential transfers in has always been forbidden by the NCAA.

People with access have a login 4. 5. Because Hawaii boosters will commit constant NCAA violations trying to recruit kids on the portal.

When a player tells their current school they want to be in the portal, the school has 48 hours to put them in it. I think I read that on another thread here.

4. twitter url="https://twitter.com/brett_mcmurphy/status/1052238030583533568" I know it's not yours, but that pic sure seems like a FERPA violation to me.

Commenting on the status of potential transfers in has always been forbidden by the NCAA. Doesn't surprise me. The NCAA always has and always will put the public appearance of its "amateurism" branding ahead of the welfare of athletes.

I know it's not yours, but that pic sure seems like a FERPA violation to me. On the Twitter reply thread, someone asked McMurphy how he got that picture and his reply was like "the portal is not public, sorry!" I guess if someone commits a FERPA violation to give a journalist protected information, it is not illegal to publish it?

Athletes do not have the ability to (physically) enter their names in the portal. There are a limited number of people at each school designated to have "write" access in the database and these are almost all (or all) in the compliance department of each school. The athlete informs the designated personnel that they want their name entered (and I also assume when they want their name removed) in the database and this must be done within 48 hours. The athlete doesn't have to get approval of anyone at the school (including the coaches) to have their name entered nor do they have to notify anyone.
