TCU (15-12, 7-9) Pablo #53Nonconference: TCU’s 3 nonconference losses came to Florida State, Cincinnati, and Colorado State – all within the Pablo top 40. TCU won the rest of their matches – but none against a team in the Pablo top 100. Conference: TCU lost in 5 sets at home to both Texas and Baylor. They split with Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Texas Tech and Oklahoma. Players Lost: (3 starters) Anna Walsh, Lexi MacLean, Paty Valle, Tori Dilfer Additions: Audrey Nails, McKenzie Nichols, Julia Adams, Afedo Manyang, Ina Ignacio, Madi Cole, Bella Swafford Black Ink: 56.5 All Conference sophomore ‘elan McCall returns. McCall hit .269 with 4.7 kills per set in her freshman season while only playing in 78 of the team’s 102 sets. Her health is critical to this team. This is a dynamite freshman class coming in led by T25 recruits Nails and Adams and T50 recruits Nichols and Manyang. Katie Clark returns after a successful freshman season along with junior Sarah Swanson. Outlook: This team is young and very talented. They are losing two of their most productive players in MB Anna Walsh and setter Tori Dilfer – but there are plenty of options to replace them and improve elsewhere. McCall is a great anchor to start with. The upside for this team is rather high. Idk if this was mentioned elsewhere but Abby Buckingham medically retired earlier this year. Not surprised. She tore ACL's twice (not sure if the same leg) in high school.

Sad to hear about Buckingham. Was really excited about her when she was verbally committed to Texas.

Texas Tech (17-13, 6-10) Pablo #59Nonconference: #37 Rice was the biggest win in an 11-3 nonconference schedule. Losses to Georgia, UCSB, and Long Beach State – LBSU being the worst loss where they lost 13-15 in the 5th set. Conference: Texas Tech started off 4-0 with wins over Baylor, Iowa State, and Kansas State. They then proceeded to lose 5 straight and 10 of their final 12 matches. Players Lost: (2 starters) Katy Keenan, Missy Owens, Kyndal Cowan Additions: Cadi Boyer, Caitlin Dugan, Lauren Dodson, Kylie Trefflich, Audrey Tuttle Black Ink: 10.5 A surprising good season from Tech last year where leading scorer Emily Hill (OH) and sophomore Brooke Kanas return. Also returning will be OH Chandler Atwood, MB Allison White, and L Emerson Solano. Replacing setter Missy Owens will be vital with sophomores Alex Kirby and Audrey Smith being the options. Freshman Boyer could be the MB replacement for Keenan. Outlook: 2018 conference season was wildly inconsistent like most of the Big 12 teams. It becomes difficult to tell who was playing well (or bad) and who was playing teams at the right time. The main issue is going to be setter – Hill and Kanas provide enough offensive stability. The presumption is from what I've seen that Tech has righted the ship, but they are very suspect to me. I don't see them really improving much in league play. Kanas and Hill are legitimate D1 talent, but they are surrounded by average play. Can they carry this team by themselves? Tech depended on attacks from their setter last year, but you can't hang your hat on that type of offense. Their preseason has been traditionally against weak opponents and they caught a couple B12 teams off-guard early. But, their true colors came out losing 10 of their last 12 matches. It's tough to win in the B12 consistently, and I can't see much improvement this year with Tech. Same story - different year.

Tech also added transfer setter Tatum Rohme from ASU. She'll be competitive. Caitlin Dugan is a stud hitter. She will contribute as well. [edit -- corrected an error about Dugan having an injury. As far as I know, she's healthy. I confused her with one of her club teammates.]

Sounds like Hart is transferring to Colorado Iowa State (21-13, 9-7) Pablo #31
Missed the NCAA Tournament, won the NIVC Nonconference – Beat Northern Iowa, but losses against Nebraska, Creighton, Utah, Syracuse, Iowa, and Oregon State. The lack of wins in the nonconference mostly ruined their chances of making the tournament per RPI and put them in a bind right from the start of the conference season. Conference – Iowa State started 1-4. Just never had the consistency all season long. Players lost: (3 starters) Jess Schaben, Grace Lazard, Hali Hillegas, Hannah Bailey Additions: Jaiden Centeno, Annie Hatch, Kenzie Mantz Black Ink: 32.5 Schaben and Lazard where Iowa State’s two best players and Hillegas was the starting libero who is transferring out. This team still has solid talent on the team. Eleanor Holthaus was very good as a freshman last year (2.3 k/s, .264). Josie Herbst (OH) returns for her senior season. Brooke Anderson and Hatch are both T50 recruits that should fill the other OH position. Replacing Lazard may be the biggest issue – Candelaria Herrera started last year and will most likely be one of the MB. Avery Rhodes (JR) and Meegan Hart (SO) are senior aces competing for a starting job. Outlook: This is a transition year with the losses of Schaben and Lazard. Herbst is the only senior on the roster. Piper Mauck returns as the starting setter for her junior season – and as a top 25 recruit needs to lead this team. There is enough talent for this team to make the tournament, but this is a deep conference.

Players most excited to see in BIG12 this coming season. Well since we are not supposed to comment on Texas....lol...I’m so excited to watch TCU- Mccall. Any info on Nichols and how is her setting? I’m hoping Mccall will have a great, injury free season with a great setter!
Kansas- Big Loss With Jada. Any info on where she is going? Nothing on the transfer thread. Looks like Minnesota transfer setter Sara Neilson is headed there. Any info or thoughts on her playing time?
Kansas State- looking forward to watching incoming freshman outside Anna Dixon, she is amazing. Both incoming freshman Dixon and Adams-Kaonohi made the Anaheim USA team. Along with Mutiri my favorite RS.

Wait so Jada Burse is transferring? Big loss for KU Depends on who they get to replace her and in some ways it may not matter if they don't get better at returning serve. I mentioned this before - KU's greatest need is anyone that is capable of playing the front row AND being able to return serve. It was so bad last year that they had to use their setter to return serve. And when their setter that could return serves got hurt, they proceeded to lose 8 of their final 10 matches.

Kansas has 14 girls lined up to play in 2019 right now. The roster is made up of 3 seniors, 2 juniors, 5 sophomores, and 4 freshmen. This team is young once again. All 4 of the freshmen who played last year (Carrier redshirted), played 80+ sets. At the beginning of the 2018 season, Kansas' youth showed as 4 of their first 5 games went to 5 set. But they were replacing 3 of the best players to ever play for KU in Havili, Payne, and Rigdon. Kansas really started to get hot when Ennis took over setting, but she got hurt and Kansas started losing matches.
I think Langs and Hill are set at MB (Van Driel may challenge Hill),however there's some questions everywhere else. Ashley Smith will start at OH, but she has yet to show that she can be a 6 rotation outside. Can Christon come right in and play 6 rotations? Kansas struggled with serve receive because neither of their OHs (Burse and Smith) were very good passers. With the addition of Nielsen, where will she play? Kansas was able to sub back row for their OH because both Ennis and Simpson played 6 rotations. I doubt they will do that this year because Nielsen is not really of a hitter. Also Gabby Simpson was the only RS last year. With the addition of Hickman(6'3) and Carrier(6'5) one of them may be the better option. Lastly, Nelson will probably start at Libero with Angello being the first DS. Monstrom and Suter wil also get time. I think Kansas will be more consistent this upcoming year. If Christon can come in and fill the role of Burse, I think Kansas can maybe sneak into the top 25. In the Big 12, only Texas and Baylor may be more talented. I think Kansas can may challenge TCU for the three spot if everything can come together.
A lot of this upcoming season comes down to the production of Christon or whoever is the second outside. Kansas was one of the first teams left out the tournament. They lost 7 seniors from the 2017 team. Then their starting outside had a season ending injury. Then 5 matches in they changed their setter. There was a game last year where Kansas had three different setters play. With the injuries and all the graduating seniors from the past year, the Kansas starting lineup was a revolving door. Yes, they lose 5 players who played in the first match of last season. However, other than Burse and Simpson the rest of them was not that big of a part of the starting group at the end of the season. If they can replace Burse, who was a very good outside, but sometimes was very error prone and lacked passing, they should get back to the tournament.

Welcome to VT - good to hear from a KU fan (I assume) or addition to B12 volleyball. I agree that the 2nd OH is going to be the biggest issue for KU this year and particularly having a 6 position OH to improve their serve receiving. I don't see Christon filling the bill as a 6 position OH - particularly in her FR season. I can see her as being an acceptable front row player - but even if she works out, there isn't much depth at OH. This along with the loss of Smith after this year and a current pipeline of one OH coming in next year makes for the need potential for an OH transfer this year. Hickman could potentially be a 6 rotation RS this year, but I have doubts on her being strong enough in serve receive. She could also give KU the potential for some offense out of the back row which was missing all of last season. I think setting is wide open between Ennis and Nielson. I suspect both will get their chances and neither is locked in. I am betting it will be a 5-1. Regardless - this will be an improvement over last year. MB should be the strength of this team with Hill, Langs, Van Driel, and Carrier. Any of them could also be an option on the RS. This team also has the potential of being a great blocking team with a lot of size. Improvement from the L/DS's could help mitigate the problems with their 3rd serve returner by covering more ground - but that is a pretty big ask. Overall - I think there is a lot of potential and outstanding depth everywhere other than OH. The absolute #1 key to this team will be the serve receive - or at least the biggest question mark in my mind.

Thanks. I'm pretty new to college volleyball as my first time watching was Kansas' come back verse USC when I was a freshmen in high school. Loved Payne,Havili, Wait and Soucie, but absoultely adored Rigdon. She was just good at so many things. So Kansas is my favorite team, but I just love volleyball in general, especially teams with fast tempos. Minnesota vs. Oregon this past year was heaven lol.
I really took favorite to Ennis last year because before she was put in the lineup, it was a little out of wack, but then when she became the primary setter things really took off. And then when she got hurt Kansas' serve receive and setting kinda faltered. I think she may have the upper hand since she had success last year and she does have a better relationship with the hitters.
The Montero injury really hurt Kansas last year (the last two years actually). She was a very good all around player, reminded of Rigdon. When she got hurt passing really faltered. The lack of passing from Smith and Burse did not help the team at all. I feel like this year will be much smoother just because KU won't have both setters playing 6 rotations which somewhat limited their options when Ennis was front row.
Kansas is once again a very young team. Yes, Smith, Nelson, and Hill are seniors, but a lot of underclassmen will be playing. But they are talented. I agree with the lack of OH depth. I think Smith became somewhat steady last year, but with only two other outsides, who are both freshmen coming in the fall, they do need someone else.
KU has been a pretty good blocking team these pass few years, so don't think that's a problem especially with a potential block of Langs (6'4) in the middle and Carrier(6'6) at RS which is huge.
Is there a type of system Kansas can run where they can use their strengths (the quality of MB and RS) and hide their weakness (the passing of the OHs)? I don't really know of one. But I'm gonna assume that KU will be running a 5-1 with the RS (Hickman) playing six rotations and the two outsides having someone to pass backrow for them. Interesting thought... maybe Nielsen will be the setter and Ennis (who is also listed as an OH) can come in to pass for one of the outsides and be able to hit back row. She was one of the better passers for KU.
So like: Setter: Nielson Libero: Nelson MB: Langs MB: Hill OH: Smith (DS: Angello) RS: Hickman (6 rotations) OH: Chirston (DS who can still hit: Ennis)
Lol that probably doesn't make sense and can't happen, but just throwing things out there. I'm just excited to see the whole thing come together

Big 12 fans, what do you think your team’s lineup will be at the beginning of the season?
For Baylor:
OH: Pressley OH: Milana MB: Fanning MB: McGhee OPP: Johnson DS: Hunt S: Lockin (unless Feuerborn comes in and challenges her) L: Bramschreiber
I’d personally like to see Fanning move back to OPP and Sydney Sacra come in at MB but we’ll see what happens. Nonetheless, Baylor should be a better team this year if they can stay away from injuries.

Not to just single out Baylor - but I wonder why some schools do not do this by now?
