This makes Wisconsin's early season loss at Kansas sting less. The Jayhawks did finish strong. I hope someone in Lawrence noticed; basketball season has started, so maybe not, unfortunately. Ultimately, the tournament is about surviving and advancing, and UW did that tonight. It would help them a lot if Morrison is okay for next weekend, but, on the other hand, Leck is probably the best RS in the country who wasn't in her team's regular lineup before Tomasevic got hurt. Tomasevic didn't hit great overall, but 28 digs and nine blocks, along with 19 kills, is still a pretty nice match, especially with a hand that is probably still not fully healed. I do think the NCAA wins as a result of this. I don't think a neutral match in Seattle would draw too many people at this point. They had a huge crowd against USC, but I don't think volleyball is that big there yet. If McLaughlin continues to win, though, that might change. One quibble with the Huskies, though: will someone please tell Courtney Thompson that volleyball players, no matter how good, don't wear headbands? That is the province of Cliff Robinson and a lot of cocky, but usually not too good, basketball players, men and women.

I thought Katie Olsovsky used to wear one too She's not the only one. USC made that 'style' popular during their first run at a National Title. Since then, it's slowly (or not so slowly) crept it's way down the ranks with VB players. In fact, you see junior players wearing them mostly because USC did. I'm not a big fan of them, just don't like they way they look, but it appears that many more will wear them until the next 'fad' comes along.

Erin Martin wears a headband for the Gophers.
Heck, they passed out #13 headbands to all the fans in attendance at one of the last Gopher conference home matches.

Washington Volleyball Advances To Sweet 16 Huskies Down Kansas in Thrilling 3-2 Second-Round Victory
SEATTLE-- The seventh-seeded Washington volleyball team (26-2) needed all five games to defeat Kansas (19-12) 3-2 to advance to the NCAA Regional Tournament for the second-consecutive season. Game scores were 34-32, 30-26, 25-30, 26-30 and 15-12. The Huskies were led by Brie Hagerty with 22 kills, while Sanja Tomasevic added 19 kills, including Washington's final three in the deciding fifth game. Kansas' Paula Caten led all players with 24 kills.
Courtney Thompson paced the Huskies with 64 assists, while picking up 12 digs. Tomasevic anchored the defensive effort with 28 digs, while Candace Lee added 22 digs. Darla Myhre had 10 blocks for UW and Tomasevic had nine.
"It was a good match, although we didn't meet any of our performance standards," said head coach Jim McLaughlin. "We met the main standard though, we won the thing. At the end of every game, we won the serve-serve-receive battle. In games three and four we were too far behind to make up the difference. We were good at the end of those games, especially game five. We got after it a little bit better, we got it on the wings and the serves, and we took some really good swings at the ball at the end. Winning is a fragile thing. People that understand it understand that it is fragile and you can't take it for granted. I think we learned a lesson from this for sure.
"We finished game one with some good volleyball. For the most part, we controlled game two, but I felt like we were flat going into game three. Then all of the sudden they were digging everything, and they put some pressure on us. They did a nice job. They elevated, but we stayed the same, and then all of the sudden we were in this dogfight. But that happens."
Kansas led throughout game one, building a five-point lead at the 14-19 mark. Washington battled back, putting together a 7-0 run to take the 21-19 lead. Tomasevic had two kills in the rally and Leck added a kill and a block. The scored knotted six more times, through 28-all, before a Tomasevic and Myhre stuff gave the Huskies game-point at 29-28. Kansas scored the next two points on a block and a Caten kill to tally its first game-point at 29-30. The Huskies pulled even at 30-all with a Jayhawk hitting errror. Washington recorded its second game-point with a Leck kill but Kansas answered with a kill by Ashley Michaels to even the score at 31-all. Hagerty responded for Washington with her fourth kill of the game to put UW on top 32-31. Caten posted her fifth kill of the game to knot the score at 32-32 and Leck gave the Huskies their fourth game-point at 33-32 with her sixth kill on the night. The Jayhawks made an attack error out of bounds to give UW the game one victory, 34-32.
Washington out hit Kansas .220 to .148 in game one. Leck and Tomasevic led all players with six kills each. Thompson had five digs for the UW defense.
The Huskies raced out of the gates in game two, building five-point lead at 7-2. The Jayhawks followed with four unanswered points to pull to within one-point a 7-6 and force a Washington timeout. The Huskies edged out to a three-point lead at 13-10, aided by a pair of Darla Myhre kills, but Kansas tied the score at 13-all with a kill and block by Josiana Lima and a UW hitting error. Washington scored the next two points with a Myhre kill and block by Jessica Veris and Hagerty and never gave up the lead. UW took its largest lead at the 20-25 mark and again at 28-23. Hagerty recorded a pair of kills to lift Washington to the 30-26 victory.
UW out hit the Jayhawks .214 to .167 in game two. Hagerty led Washington with six kills, while Myhre chipped in five.
Game three opened even with six ties as late a 10-all. Kansas built a five-point lead at the 12-17 mark, aided by a 7-2 run that included five UW errors. The Jayhawks pulled away, taking an eight-point lead at 19-27 but Washington cut the lead to five-points with a Alesha Deesing block, Ashley Aratani ace and Tomasevic kill to force a Kansas timeout at 22-27. The Jayhawks recorded game-point at 24-29 with a UW blocking error and a kill by Caten. Kansas put the game away with a kill by Jana Correa to give the Jayhawks the 25-30 victory.
Washington hit just .097 in game three with 14 kills and eight errors on 62 attacks. Kansas hit .276 with 21 kills. Caten had seven kills for KU in the set, while Tomasevic and Hagerty each added five for UW.
Game four was evenly matched with eight ties as late as 16-all. Washington then strung four points together, including two Myhre blocks, to take the 20-16 lead and trigger a Jayhawk timeout. Kansas roared back, scoring the next three points to force a Husky timeout at 20-19. KU tied the score at 20-all with a Correa kill and a Kansas block to give the Jayhawks the lead at 20-21. Washington then brought in Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Christal Morrison off the bench for her first appearance since tearing her meniscus in practice on Wednesday. Hagerty and Myhre recorded consecutive kills to edge out to the 22-21 lead but Kansas continued to pressure, taking the 22-24 lead and the Jayhawks never trailed again. Catzen scored three of KU's final points to take the 26-30 victory and force a fifth-game tiebreaker.
Kansas out hit Washington .163 to .128 in game four and held the 19 to 11 advantage in kills. Caten had six kills for KU in the set, while Lima added five. Hagerty had five kills for the Huskies.
Game five was neck-in-neck with neither team leading by more than two points through 7-8. After the team's switched benches, Kansas came out of the break with a block by Andi Rozum and Ashley Michaels to go up 7-9 and trigger a Washington timeout. The Huskies evened the score at 9-all with kills by Hagerty and Leck. UW took the 10-9 lead after a Jayhawk hitting error to result in a KU timeout. Correa came out of the break with a kill to knot the score at 10-all but Hagerty and Tomasevic tallied back-to-back kills to give Washington the 12-10 edge and force another Kansas timeout. The Jayhaeks pulled to within one-point at 13-12 with a Lima kill but Tomasevic gave UW match-point with her 19th kill of the match. Washington sealed the 15-13 victory with a double hit by KU.
UW out hit Kansas .217 to .182 in the set.
Washington joins No. 2 seed Penn State, No. 10 seed St. Mary's and No. 15 seed UCLA next week at the NCAA Regional in Seattle, Dec. 10-11.
Washington will face St. Mary's on Friday, Dec. 10 at the Bank of America Arena, while Penn State squares off with UCLA. Game times will be decided on Monday. Friday's winners will play each other in the quarterfinal on Saturday, Dec. 11 with the winner advancing to the Final Four in Long Beach, Calif., Dec. 16-18.

Damn, I picked Kansas to win this game. Having seen them play I felt they could beat UW. This should not be considered a surprise that they almost did.

Greichaly Cepero wore one during her career which started in 1999 so USC copied from HER It's so 80's..Olivia Newton John, "Let's Get Physical". (Where's my legwarmers?) Though, I doubt that Ms. Thompson cares what we think. Heck, maybe she has a sweaty forehead.
