What “politics” are you guys talking about? Someone gave a fictional example of “politics” via the indoor team with Nikki Taylor, RAMS, and the AD. I don’t see how that’s relevant to beach vb.

At newbeach you seam to have inside information about girls at the lower flights not getting along. You must be one of the coaches to have such knowledge. Haha! I wish! I will say that I have known most of the girls on both the indoor and beach team for the past 3-5 years. I am neither a coach or parent! Based on the fact that you just now joined this forum and that you have only posted about the transfers and how the UH Beach coaches (Hall) should be let go, it sounds to me like you are a disgruntled parent of one of the girls who is transferring and are upset with the coaching staff that your daughter didn't play. You also seem to have some insight into some of the in-fighting on the team. Oh, and you also posted your thoughts on the top 5 next year (and UH not being one of them).

That was me. I used a fictitious example of politics in indoor volleyball to point out that "politics" and coaching biases are different (and exist in both indoor and beach - and really all sports). I was reading a few posts (before reading all the posts) where some posters were talking about "politics". I really have no idea what exactly they were referring to. I think it was volleyrate that first mentioned that "politics don't belong in sport".

So, just to clarify what “politics” means in case you guys are using it incorrectly, “politics” means that the coaches are dictating playing time due to reasons not related to merit, injury, or sport-specific strategy. Reasons like personal connections, money, external pressures from higher level UH officials, some sort of conflict of interest, and the like would come under “politics.” Playing favorites is NOT politics if there is a legitimate reason for the coach wanting to groom a certain someone.

volleyrate I just noticed that you posted several of my posts without comment awhile back (after you joined the forum in March). Then you made a separate comment about how somebody on Volleytalk is a coach and not a fan. Then later, you outright stated that I "must" be one of the coaches. Clearly, you are on a bit of witch-hunt. I assure you that I am NOT a coach. Just because I have some inside knowledge on the team doesn't make me any more the "coach" than you (who is also apparently familiar with some of the team issues). Oh, and clearly you are not fans of the current coaching staff and are just on here to stir things up. If you read much of my many posts, I haven't always agreed with Hall's decisions. I don't necessarily even think he is the best coach out there. However, he's probably a coach within UH's budget, he isn't a "prestigious" coach and like it or not, he has a winning record and probably won't be let go at this time because a few of the girls are transferring out. The indoor team has had quite a few players leave/ transfer out for various reasons as well. I would hope that each case of someone transferring is looked at by UH admin. I don't think this happens to any significance (based on other players that I know that have left various programs). If the transfers are occurring for serious reasons of political interference or abuse at any school (and not merit, strategy, personal reasons etc.), then I would hope that it is addressed more seriously. Unfortunately, sometimes it is just that players are unhappy and it is subjective as to whether or not one player deserves playing time over another.

For a money-strapped sport like beach volleyball, what I think may happen under "politics" is when a rich donor agrees to give a %*$#load of money IF -- and this is the politics part -- the coach played one of the donor's favorites on one of the flights. To use a ludicrous example, let's say the Aunties wanted to give Hall's program $10,000 every year if Hall allowed them to pick one player for one of the flights. This has to be done in the down-low because if it ever got out, people would get in trouble. Also, this would be harmless if the Aunties picked a player Hall was going to play anyway, e.g., Morgan Martin. But usually, scumbag donors wouldn't pick someone who was going to play on merit. They'd pick someone who had no chance for playing time and they figured paying someone off would be the best way.

I feel bad for Misraje. She initially came to UH for indoor during RAMS's inaugural season. But due to injury (it was alleged on VT), she decided to join the beach team instead. Two years later, no progress re. playing time. Now, she's allegedly about to leave.

I totally feel bad for Misraje as well. Her injury before coming to UH was unfortunate. It was never a guarantee that she would get playing time indoors and it was too bad beach didn't pan out for her.
I do think that all the players have to take some responsibility on whether or not they get playing time. They have to rehab injuries and get themselves in the best position to become a starter. That might mean they have to get in shape, have to spend the summer playing competitively etc.
Maglio said in one of her interviews that her goal (indoors) after her freshman year was to either become a starter or to get playing time (I don't remember which she said). She was one of the hardest working players (and not necessarily just in the off-season) but at every single practice to get better, working hard, learning the game, putting time in the weight room etc. She became one of the most successful players from UH because she worked hard, had the physical attributes and was a coachable, team player. She did everything she could to become the player she is when even some of the coaching staff might not have believed in her. I think even Ozee was a player with more potential than beach experience. She too has worked really hard to become a starter.
On one hand people complain about recruiting potential, but Maglio is an example of what recruiting for "potential" can be. Even if we recruit the top-rated players, they don't always pan out. Even current starters have to continually push themselves or new players will take "their" position (like how a Scoles or Kan "took" positions as starters). I remember Schucht also saying that she was scared every year that someone would "take" her position and that she had to push herself to get better.
I hope that the players who leave do find success elsewhere and maybe they are better suited to a team that sees their potential or has a system where they will fit in better.
On another note, does anyone know what "scholarship" Lea Monkhouse received at UCLA? I remember Stein saying something about her getting this specific scholarship (as there wasn't any beach scholarships left).
Are some "other" scholarships a way that schools can recruit and keep talent? Is this something UH does or could do?

It wasn't mean it in a way to single out an individual due to 'favoritism', the meaning of it in the terms of athletics was probably misconstrued by others maybe even myself in the eyes of others,if that's who you guys are attacking lol...

... Are some "other" scholarships a way that schools can recruit and keep talent? Is this something UH does or could do? I contacted a school (not UH) about setting up an academic scholarship for student-athletes and they told me, in no uncertain terms, that if any scholarship is set up for student-athletes, it is scrutinized very carefully to ensure that it doesn't violate NCAA regs. They're suspicious of academic scholarships where one of the qualifications is that they have to be a student-athlete. If it's a pure academic scholarship and a student-athlete gets it on merit, then everything is on the up-and-up. I don't know what Monkhouse got, if anything, but if she got something other than a beach scholarship, it must be academic (e.g., field of study specific, Canadian, general College of Liberal Arts stuff) and it must be something she got legitimately based on academic merit, because if it wasn't, UCLA would get in trouble.

Not a parent, just a volleyball fan like you that hears things the same as everyone else. If your on social media you know about Forbes transferring. I was standing in line at Canes out the door and heard people talking about the girls beach volleyball team. Dreeuws name was mentioned & if it’s true she is solid and will get pick up by a top school.Forbes is the only one who announced on social media. Let’s see if any of the other girls come out with news of a transfer. Time will tell!
