I've seen all of the boys who play 16s and the one 15's, and there's simply no argument from me they they are not all elite, deserving players, and my comment is not about them, at all. One or two can't make it? Totally understandable. 9? It's a bad look, no matter what the reason - that's my only point, here. Especially when they collect money for tryouts! I totally agree with you. It is a bad look. Mack & one of the Oh twins were at tryouts & I believe they did not know selection ahead of time. Still, I wish they were more clear that the teams would be heavily populated with 16s & 17s. All of these tryouts seem futile, even for elite players.

If I recall scva normally takes a mix of athletes. Some Years older and not as young. Normally I'm split 6-6! This year we only took 2 seniors 2 soph 8 juniors. This is our youngest year.
But !! If you have a younger player who can make a run for the program Vs a senior who is a one and done. The vote goes to the runner / younger athlete

Sean McQuiggan is a prospect I’ve been trying to get the coaches of Hawaii to look at: was 6’9 when I saw his first recruiting video, then his 2nd recruiting video get posted in his ig stories and he grew an inch and is Patrick Gasman’s height . Any word on his recruiting trail? Whose looking at him? Whose his interest?

Does anyone know how the holiday camps for select work? The last two years they only had holiday camps for the youth age group.

From what I have been able to discern, the holiday camp is only for the Youth age group, and appears to be the primary "tryout" for the Youth National Training Team. Since we just finished the second year of the two year cycle, this year's camp will be for "Incoming Youth" with birthdays in 2003 and 2004. In the past, invitations have gone out in October. Most of this summer's A1 athletes will get invitations with a few additional adds (perhaps highly rated A2 athletes and/or strong Continental and Regional players).

The Holiday Camp used to also be for Select athletes - interesting that it now only included the Youth age group. It is possible that a player brand new to the pipeline will also get an invitation - the recruiting coaches talk to each other and will talk to whoever the coaches are for this team if they find a newer player who shines during the fall club season.

Do you concur that the invites went out in October? And... while this may be too SCVA specific: but IF the invites go out in October, that means only Qualifiers 1 would be in the books this year (aka the "Day of Mismatches").

FWIW - I sent an email to USAV last year (2018) asking about Holiday camp and was told: "Yes, there will be a holiday program for the Youth age group this year. The program is an invite-only program and those will be sent directly to eligible athletes by the end of October." One of the 18s from our club got his invite on 10/26/18.

Because I always have questions: 1. Was the 18 in HP? 1a. Which level, if so? 2. Do you know how close in time the evaluations were posted vs the invite?

The coaches are evaluating players all year round (tournaments, HPs..) and make determinations about invites based on the body of work. Yes, there are new kids who get invited. You don't have to be in the pipeline or attend HPs. Last Christmas there were at least 6-7 really talented kids who were new and one was chosen for the Youth National Team.
I believe having the Select age group along with Youth made the camp too large and too hard to manage. That was the impression I got from talking with USA folks. I could be wrong.

Interesting - so when is the first HP opportunity for the 2005/2006 group? Is that the spring tryouts or is there a Holiday/winter opportunity to get involved a little earlier?

I am not sure about the regular invites. We were on a recruiting trip sometime around thankgiving when he became aware of the Holiday Camp, and the whole HP thing wasn't even on our radar yet (clueless!!). (and that was the final year he was age eligible to participate so our only experience) He received an email invitaion about a week later. I assume another invitation was turned down or they keep a few slots available for players that may not have been in the system yet.

I want you to be right on this - I've seen a few very talented kids on the lower courts that could stand a good look, but I've only personally observed the coaches looking at A1/A2, maybe A3. (I may well just have those boys on my brain today because it's Tryout Day, and I'm hoping some join my kids team.)
