Chaim and Jeremy? Or Jake and Taylor? The match against Jeremy and Chaim was where most of the blocks came from —9 blocks. J&T would stand for Jake and Taylor. Yes, but Phil didn’t get as much blocks against Jake and Taylor than against Jeremy and Chaim.

Right, I wanted to see if Phil's average would be higher against everyone else. Plus they went to 3 sets, so an extra game. He got 4 blocks in that 3 setter. take that away, and he got 21 blocks in 8 sets, almost 3 per set.

yeah, last year New York paid out $20,000. Nice increase. Second place paid out $22,000 this year. Thats a fantastic change. Anyone still wondering why Brooke and Brandie played? The payout has no impact whatsoever in determining whether a few of these players enter the tournament.

I was able to catch the phenomenal game btw Gibb/Crabb vs Dalhauser/Lucena! I was very surprised that the majority of the fans were cheering for Gibb/Crabb. Also, I don't think Bourne/Troy will be much better than Bourne/Trevor. It seems like what the USA team lacks is strong blockers. Most international teams have blockers much taller than Bourne, Trevor Crabb and Field! Think about it. They're the same height as Christian Sorum who is the defender on the #1 Norwegian team!

Sure, these players are out there chasing a dream and playing because they love it. But overtime that increase in payout will help legitimize being a "pro" volleyball player. It's a step in the right direction, and to brush that aside seems silly.

Any money matters in this sport, these guys can't be fulltime without living with fifteen roommates.

You totally missed my point, guys. Of course the money is a huge deal to most of these players, and a big motivator for them to play. I was simply responding to Guest2's comment how about if anyone was still wondering why Brooke and Brandie played in New York City, thus suggesting that the money was the main factor. My only point is that a few of these players come from very wealthy families, so the payout is not a motivating factor in whether or where they play. That is all I was saying.

I have no idea what wealthy families want or don't want, as I am not a member of that class. I'm only saying that not every single player on the AVP has to make money playing volleyball - simple fact. Guest2 seemed to imply that one of the reasons that Brooke and Brandie decided to play New York City was because of the larger payout, and I am suggesting that this may not factor into the calculus at all for certain players. In fact, I think it is pretty cool when young people from wealthy families go out and make their mark and succeed in whatever their chosen endeavor might be, because if it were me, I would likely just go veg on a beach somewhere and sponge off of my family!!!

It may not for some but those are few and far between. Having a payout better than a 4 star, at a tournament in your home country, with a field that isnt as difficult (although it certainly seemed to be for Brooke/Brandie)? These are pro athletes, many with families, many who are aging and should be thinking about their next careers (Brooke is not that old, but she isn't young either). More than likely this would have been the biggest payday of the year for any player not on the Ateam had they won and probably still will be for Sponcil/Claes and the Ateam (unless there are bigger payout AVPs) This big a payday is a big step forward for the AVP, maybe as impactful as the new schedule

Agreed - it's a big step forward, and the Gold Series higher purses are awesome. I only took issue with the assertion that both Brandie and Brooke played NYC because of the chance to make more $$$ - one of them may have, but for the other, money is likely not a consideration.
