I wish we had a libero who could both dig and pass.... Lake and Hentz are promising, as is White. Unfortunately it looks like we will have to settle for Courtney in 2020, and I hope she improves. I don’t believe Lake and especially Hentz have enough time left before 2020

Thanks for the responses. My next question: Do you think KK will ask Lake and Heinz to come train in January? Ask? Yes. I think it's much more likely that Lake will be more able/willing to either graduate early or put off her last semester of school. Although has Hentz EVER been in the USA gym? Senior or junior teams? Hentz was on the YNT in 2015, played as a DS (most likely cuz her serve receive was not as solid). She’s always been a dynamic digger, but receive she has vastly improved since her time as an OH in HS/Club

Following this week’s Olympic qualifiers, Lake will return to Provo and start preparing for BYU’s 2019 campaign. After college, she will study her options regarding her volleyball future in the professional ranks. She’s anxious to put her accounting degree to work (she begins graduate studies this fall) and hopes to start a family one day. So she has finished her undergrad. Maybe she can find a place to play pro starting in January.

So, Megan Courtney plays OH with her pro team next season. Who is getting better libero training? Her playing OH in Europe for 8 months, or Hentz and Lake playing libero in the NCAA for 4 months? Is it conceivable Hentz or Lake could join Team USA in January and make a run for Tokyo? I’m just not impressed with Courtney as a libero. I still think KR is #1 libero. Anxious to see Larson and Hill play-hopefully tomorrow. The reality is that serve receive is 10x more important than defense to Karch & Co. That's just the way high level volleyball is played. Courtney DOES get every bit of serve receive training while playing as an OH in her pro season. I think this is essentially correct ... passing much more important than digging at Pro and International level. For Hentz to add value she would have to be nearly on par as a passer vs Courtney. IMO, digging and especially picking up tips she would run circles around Courtney. Digging is probably less important for the USA than teams with smaller lineups like (say) Japan who cannot block as effectively.

Also, editing my post about her being in grad school. BYU evidently has a “early in” option for accounting. If you’re accepted to the Masters program in accounting, you can start taking courses your senior year. That’s what she’s doing. I know at least 4 people who graduated from BYU in accounting but DIDNT get into the Masters program. #shemustbereallysmart

Courtney was one of the least effective OH this past season in Italy. She had one game 0/12 in attack. If she can't score, I'm not sure she will be able to keep her starting spot. She will have decent competition on the bench unlikely last season when she had none.
She will play with Valiseva, which means everyone will be serving on Vasileva and not on Courtney. And they won't have Egonu...so Courtney will have to help them offensively.

Passing doesn't seem to be the strength for Courtney or Hentz, but I have no idea which is better at it. Probably Courtney at this point, given her experience with the international/professional serving and ball. I could see Hentz matching her passing given some time and reps. But, time is definitely running out. Would have been nice to see Hentz getting some work with the national team this summer
