Interesting that the All Tournament team as listed on the UCSB site has somebody from every participating team except USC. Anybody know why?
All Tournament Team: Rich Nelson-UCLA, Chris Tamas-Pacific, Curt Toppel-Stanford, David Lee-Long Beach, Aaron Mansfield-UCSB, Ty Tramblie-CSUN, and MVP Jimmy Pelzel-UC Irvine.
BTW, UCI came into the tournament seeded 7.

No offense to any Cardinal fans, but the Stanford website really was a bit careless with reporting...
They listed the scores for the Cardinal as 33-31, 25-30, 30-27, 30-24. Shouldn't it be the other way around?
And it lists our record as 2-1... Shouldn't it be 4-1?
Not a big deal, but it did bug me a bit...
Looks like Beau is our setter! Huntington in the house baby...
GO BEACH!!!

Congratulations to UCI and John Speraw! I guess being the former assistant coach at UCLA helped a lot with the "scouting". John knows the Bruins inside out. But, that was a great upset. It's promising that UCI is finally living up to its full potential with a real coach.
I hope the Bruins come back strong next week for the rematch. I can't wait for the injured players to come back too. I wasn't very surprised when UCI won since even Al Scates was saying that they should not have been seeded #1 since they were not in full strength because of the numerous injuries. Hopefully, everyone else will remain healthy during the season. The most important thing is to peak at the right time during the playoffs and the NCAA tournament. Al Scates is on a mission to get his 19th NCAA championship!

Great job Coach Speraw!! Job well done. Irvine, a team with little potential in the past, looks like a team that is learning how it feels to win. Yes, the season is early and alot can happen, but what a way to start. Best of luck next weekend against Al it should prove to be another exciting battle

I'd written this year off as a rebuilding one for UCI, but I'd say there a definite playoff team now.
I hesitate to take too much from this tournament-UCSB generally wins or gets 2nd in it, and then proceeds to suck ass the rest of the season-but it's still impressive.
Amazing what good coaching can do for a team.

A lot of needless talk about who's gonna win what if you ask me. UCI did a great job in this tournament, but IT IS EARLY, and a great deal can and WILL happend between now and the MPSF Tournament! Some teams will peak early and some of the younger teams will get a whole lot better, barring injury to key personnel! Way too much chest pounding right now if you ask me!

OO7, they can enjoy the moment. Regardless of the timing, with a new coach, and accomplishing a championship win such as that they deserve to celebrate. You don't think they know the obvious that you point out? It's early, but today is today. I'm not a UCI fan, but I can feel good for them and the success they're enjoying for now under their new coach. No one is over zealous.

LBSU setting: Hildebrand set for the first two matches - vs. CSUN and USC; Peters set for the match against Stanford. I think these two will continue to battle for the position for a while.

BeachMom, both Tyler and Beau are GREAT SETTERS, probably the best twosome in the country! Not sure if one will eventually "beat out" the other, but whatever happens will inure to the benefit of the TEAM and the PROGRAM at Long Beach State. You really do need at least two guys who can set, in case of injury, etc. so Long Beach is sitting pretty in this area. Compound it by the fact that the team is dominated by freshmen and sophomores, with no seniors at all on the roster, and the future is extremely bright for our men!!!!!!! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BEACH

Amen to that! It is great that we have so much depth at every position, really.
I like them all and I know it is hard to sit on the bench. I want them all to play! They are such a great group of guys off the court too!! ;D

I just want to congratulate UCSB and Preston for finally making the Elephant Bar Invitational a real tourney. He has had basically the Gauchos and a whole bunch of club teams the last couple of years, and the tourney was pretty much a joke. But it was pretty sweet to get all these teams from the MPSF in there.
ANd, is it me or are a lot of the teams mediocre? Everyone talks about parity in the MPSF, but it seems to me that ALL the teams are getting weaker, or at least gravitating to the same point. Every team has decent talent, but other than LB it seems none of the teams have any fire. They are just out there going through the motions, it kinda sucks.
AND lastly, its good to see UCI is getting better. With the location and the fact that its a UC school, they should have had a respectable program long ago. Way to go Speraw.
