Well I wouldn't call it the biggest upset of the tournament. PSU is very overrated and Washington should have gotten the #2 seed instead. With that being said... congrats to UCLA. They win Game 4 30-28.

They win Game 4 30-28. I do agree with you, Washington should have been #2 or better yet, #1. But at the beginning of the year UCLA was ranked #3. Maybe that was closer than everyone gave them credit--Pac 10 has 2, maybe four in the final 8. 1/2 of the final 8 would be the Pac 10. If UCLA had been at the Minneapolis regional, it might have been a Pac 10 final four. The committee did not give the Pac 10 the respect they deserved, and that goes for the Washington ranking.

Who cares about respect, the Pac-10 is kicking reer amd taking names.

One interesting note: Andy took Brynn Murphy and Becky Green out in game 4 for Colby and Heather Cullen. This strategy seemed to work, as Penn State didn't seem to adjust to these changes.

Interesting quote from Russ Rose on Penn State website www.gopsusports.com/pressreleases/pressrelease.cfm?anncid=7169Looks like Penn State didn't play their best tonight. I really feel for them. A loss it a lot easier to take if you know you played your best, but just lost to a better team. This doesn't seem to be the case in this match. Anyone who saw this match have any insights they can share?

im not a coach or have allot of insight into the details of a match, however ucla had allot of more energy in the match than penn state. I kept thinking they were jet laged. They had a very "smooth" offence but ucla was blocking them well.
although I was rooting for ucla so the huskies would not have to face them, I liked them as a team. Im not much of a ucla fan. The girls not playing seem to disrespect the other team with some of their cheers and pointing.
All said I felt bad for penn state. They seem to be playing in slow motion. Their setter was awsome. Their hitters were having allot of problems with recieve of serve. The setter had to try to set from all over the court.
In the end they just looked stunded at being beat.
strange match

I've been waiting for awhile to say this. Where's the guy who was squawking at the beginning of the season that UCLA was the most overrated team in all of volleyball?
UCLA played tonight like the team is capable of playing. They are finally healthy, although senior Heather Cullen still did not start. She did come in to play a critical role and no doubt will see playing time tomorrow as well. And, they have finally been able to go with the same lineup for a little while.
There were a number of people who were not that surprised that UCLA won tonight - the people who are very familiar with the team.

Frankly, as I've stated in other threads I don't think the NCAA did Penn State (or Minnesota) any real favors by giving them relatively weak 1st / 2nd round matchups. It does nothing to prepare them for the much tougher matchups in the regionals. I thought Minnesota have to face the winner of UNI / UCSB in the 2nd round last year actually helped them when facing Pepperdine and Washington in the regional matches. Its too bad that UCLA and Washington had to be doubled up in Seattle, however, Ohio State and Minnesota are in the same situatoin in Minneapolis. With 6-7 teams for each conference in the tournament there's no way to not have teams from either conference doubled up in some regions. The Pac 10 would probably have gotten a 7th team into the tournament as well if one of the other 4 had managed an overall winning record.

It's no fun unless you name names, Charlie. He he. I would, but senility is already setting in and, to be honest, I don't remember who it was. What can I say?

Its too bad that UCLA and Washington had to be doubled up in Seattle, however, Ohio State and Minnesota are in the same situatoin in Minneapolis. It's down to a few teams now, so these matchups are inevitable. If you want to win the NCAA Championship, you have to be ready to beat anyone you face.
