My point exactly. Hawai’i is a balanced team as is Kamehameha. You take out one exceptional player and that messes with the chemistry and play. Until the last couple of matches, they’ve been having a difficult time dispatching lesser competition, like Irvine. I totally agree that without Oglivie, Iolani would have been highly overmatched, but they still took the more balanced team to 5 with a (wo)man team, suffering a reverse sweep. IMO, without Akana or Kahahawai, Iolani would’ve swept or win in 4. We’ll never know. Nope! And a couple posters are trying to explain this. Oglivie WAS the team. No one is comparable - it's not a 1:1 comparison -- Oglivie has a greater value, pulls more weight. From an offensive standpoint only: Take Elena Oglivie out vs. Kamehameha pins (Devin, Akana, Robins) --> Kamehameha wins (probably easily) Take Elena out vs. also take out one of the Kamehameha pins --> Kamehameha still wins. Put Elena in vs. Kamehameha without one of the three pins --> Iolani probably wins. Elena WAS Iolani. No real sense comparing University of Hawaii and Kamehameha. It's not the same. Oglive's absence has a greater impact on her team to any of the Kamehameha pins on their team. Sure, it takes a team effort, but we are just assuming everything else is equal, which is seemed it was. I still think Iolani could have pulled it out had the coach rested her in the fourth when the fifth set was impending. Also, Iolani's setter should have purely just gone to her in the front row to start off the fifth. Elena Oglive was huge for Iolani. Moving forward, it will probably be Kamehameha and Punahou in years to come. Kamehameha has such a pool of talent to choose from that come from all over the island. Punahou can pretty much scholarship anyone they want. So, also, before anyone also says ILH is so dominant ... just remember they have the ability to pull the best players out of their communities by offering them scholarships. There is recruiting even in the high school ranks! Who could turn down a tuition like $21,000/year? It may be that the ILH can recruit anyone, but it's not that easy. Each school has its own entrance policy and the students must qualify. As for Kamehameha, they have to pass the series of tests and of Hawaiian blood and now you could get in without being Hawaiian but there has to be no other candidate with Hawaiian blood that can qualify first. It used to be you must have a quarter of proven Hawaiian blood when I was there. The tuition was one thousand dollars for non-border students and the princess's foundation paid for the rest, which was much much more. Iolani and Punahou can offer full-ride scholies if there is a need. OIA schools also recruit, they just need district exemption, like living with a relative. And I know of first-hand instances. So most schools can find a way to do it. Not to mention transfers from out of state/country. I think the resources available make a difference, like coaching talent and administration support.

You’re definitely right about the ILH and their coaching staffs. The big 3 have some of the largest and elite people on staff. Resources are also great for ILH schools in terms of facilities, so there really are a lot of factors. The big 4 of OIA D1 probably will remain that way primarily due to their coaches as well as the athletes being more ready when they come in - Moanalua,Kahuku, Mililani and Kapolei.

Which to me sounds similar to the college D1 landscape. With the allowance for football tv money to seep into all sports, those schools receive so much more money than the mid-majors or minor teams. I’m not impressed with the teams that can recruit the AA and pay its students more stipend winning a championship. I’m impressed with those schools without those advantages that keep fighting just to get a seat at the table.

Can someone explain how Iolani didn't make the State Tournament? Did Le Jardin take the third ILH spot because they need to send one from Quad 2? Why was the Kam-Iolani matchup on October 8th the game that decided the final spot? We are The Kamehameha Schools, or Kamehameha School - Kapalama campus. Kam school does not exist. I'll keep calling it Kam thanks. Using a nickname doesn't diminish my bloodline.

It was "Kam" in the 1970s when I grew up in Honolulu. I don't see anything wrong with it. Nothing wrong with shortened versions: "Carolina" for University of North Carolina "Pitt" for University of Pittsburgh "Mid-Pac" for Mid Pacific Institute "UDub" for University of Washington "Cal" for UC Berkeley

It doesn’t diminish your bloodline, but as a Hawaiian you should know the significance of names. Especially those of our past Mōʻī. Names carry meaning and if you feel the need to cut them short and diminish their meaning for the sake of convenience then I guess that’s your choice.

I would have to respectfully disagree that the match was played at a high level. Elena Oglivie played at a high level. Without her that match wouldn't even have been close. Agreed. Iolani does not take a set off without her. If Kamehameha lost Devon and Iolani Elena, Kamehameha still wins. Elena was better as a freshman but Devin is having the better sophomore year . Devin is 4 inches taller with much higher contact point but Elena was the better backrow player. interested to see what Devin does her final two seasons. 2022 is a strong class in Hawaii but RAM as of now will not have a scholarship available unless they get a junior transfer next season or she saves one.I would save one for Devin. There have not been many players from Hawaii with her length and potential. Those that do usually become NCAA All Americans (Nikki, Lily) Getting Kahahawai and Miller(ds), Matias(s) as walks on would be a nice 2022 class and help the beach team as well.

Oh if you’re talking specifically about that match I see where you’re coming from. Definitely would have been difficult to make that comeback without a key player. And speaking of ILH and OIA. If I was Coach Rob, I would offer some kind of scholie even if it's through the foundation to... Nika Danielson, Lei Akana, Kahahawai, Maui Robins and De Sa. These are the type of players that play with HEART. No attitude on the court, just balls to the wall. And yes I know most have committed, but I would seriously make a sincere pitch for them to de-commit. I've heard of Akana to USC, but where are the others committed to?
