Vanguard University comes out victorious in their program debut agains St. Katherine taking three straight sets. 25-13, 25-10, 25-16. It will be interesting to see if this squad can ride this wave heading into a challenging week ahead with two games against D3 Powerhouse Springfield, a home game against Concordia-Irvine, and their first conference match next Friday at Hope International. Watched the livestream, and they said Karch was there to watch, and that Sean Rooney and Tama Miyashiro are helping coach? Not a bad start at all. Karch was there yes. He walked in a bit late and it seemed like the line judge neared him was a bit distracted:) Rooney is helping Rostratter, they coached together at Pepp. Vanguard looked like they were in another league in that game

Oak Invitational at Menlo this weekend. This will give us a chance to see a few GSAC teams go at it pre-conference (Menlo, Hope International, UC Merced). Siena Heights and Life are also in the field. It will be very interesting to see Menlo against some higher quality teams. They're 4-0, but 3 wins total over weak sisters Saint Katherine and Simpson U. A nice win over D3 UC Santa Cruz, as well, but that's not a good indicator how they'll look against NAIA competition. Merced and Hope should both be pretty strong this year and Siena Hts. has been a quality team, too. Nice to see the mixing of teams from other regions. With more NAIA teams on the West Coast, we're seeing more and more teams from other regions going west instead of the other way around. I expect Menlo to fare very well this weekend. Ibrahimovic is special. AA as a freshman last year and may be even better this year. Chase Direito is an absolute beast in the middle. Collin Jordan has moved into the other OH position, pushing Akash Dhothar to the bench. And it looks like freshman Lucas Larson will be the primary setter this year, filling the spot left open by Trey Lake's departure.

Vanguard University continues their inaugural season with a thrilling 5 set victory over D3 powerhouse Springfield. 26-24, 19-25, 26-24, 24-26, 15-13.
The match was extremely fun to watch and the atmosphere in “The Pit” was electrifying. The offensive show was fronted by outside hitter Kyle Anema leading the team in kills with 22, Bryce Thomson contributed an outstanding 50 setting assists. The rest of the squad combined for 27 kills. The defensive effort was amazing as well with Colby Cook leading in digs with 12 and freshman middle blocker Cody Watts putting up a wall with 5 blocks. The team together rounded up 48 digs and 8 blocks against a powerful offense brought on by Springfield.
Up next: Concordia Irvine (3-2 on the year) Any predictions on this next matchup?

Menlo a perfect 4 and 0 for the tournament, only losing a couple sets. Life and Hope each split their 4 matches, with Merced and Siena Hts each going 1-3. Nice reverse sweep 5 set comeback win by Life over Siena Hts early on Saturday. Life was actually down by at least 5 points near the end of both sets 3 and 4, but came back in each and then controlled the 5th set for the win. Menlo didn't disappoint. Looking forward to their matches with BenU-Mesa and Vanguard. Unfortunately, Menlo doesn't have any matches scheduled east of Arizona the rest of the year. I would like to see them against Grand View, MoBap, or Aquinas, but we would have to wait until the National Championship tournament for that to happen, if they make it that far.

Wow, tough crowd! Menlo goes 8-0, albeit with no wins over ranked teams, but loses a spot. St. Xavier wins a 5-setter over Aquinas and those two flip-flop positions around Menlo. And why couldn't Campbellsville get all the way to No. 1 after defeating both MoBap and Grand View, who somehow stays at No. 1? Campbellsville even gets the most first place votes, but can't overcome them. I know the season is just getting started and the coaches are struggling to differentiate the pretenders from the contenders, but some of this just strikes me as odd. It appears some coaches are too stuck on their preseason rankings.

It appears some coaches are too stuck on their preseason rankings. The sheer fact that they received more 1st place votes actually suggests the consensus of the coaches agree with you. They also hold Grand View in high esteem so the number of 2nd place votes they received actually gave them 1st.

It appears some coaches are too stuck on their preseason rankings. I have been saying for years the rankings are %*$#... but I disagree that campbellsville should be #1 or even #2... they got put too high in my opinion. The rest of their schedule is a cake walk other than MAYBE AQUINAS.... I say maybe because I think their sheen has worn off from year 1 and they won’t even be a tournament team this year unless they upset Lourdes in the tournament. Which I doubt will happen. So if campbellsville goes to #1 they will coast all season there which is crap... they had 2 good wins in the first weekend of competition. Good for them. But that isn’t deserving of a #1 ranking

I’ve always found it odd that the NCCAA National Championships are so early in the season. Would anticipate Ottawa and Campbellsville in the finals.

Menlo just beat CSUN in 4. They are impressive The NAIA will probably find some excuse to drop them in the rankings again. No love for the west coast.

Menlo just beat CSUN in 4. They are impressive The NAIA will probably find some excuse to drop them in the rankings again. No love for the west coast. If they don’t play any of the ranked NAIA teams they won’t get any love. They will need to win conference most likely. But that will likely happen as BenU seems down. There has been plenty of Midwest NAIA teams that have beaten D1/2 teams in and out of season. It happens. No question that the west coast gets the shaft but honestly in the past several years the west coast teams overall have not been good other than BenU Mesa
