Yeah, but have you ever been to S.D.? at least 40 times a year. Sioux Falls has plenty of city things to do, but I rather like Lewis & Clark Lake for activities, their frisbee golf course is killer. I love me some disc golf.

The most important thing that everyone’s overlooking is that Juhnke’s brother is fine as hell. Pics or it didn't happen.

There are enough seeded teams near Vermilion that I would expect there will be teams flying in to fill out these subregionals: Creighton Nebraska Minnesota I think that Madison is outside the 400 mile preferred travel zone from Vermillion. 432 miles from USD to UW-Madison, according to the official table (although there is a "Madison, South Dakota" about 100 miles north of Vermillion, which is home to "Dakota State University" (which is not to be confused with "South Dakota State University" in Brookings) and while I'm at it, the distances to the other potential host teams that you mentioned: Creighton: 135 miles from USD to Creighton Nebraska: 190 miles from USD to UN-Lincoln Minnesota: 300 miles from USD to the University of Minnesota

If you are ever in the area, go to the one @ the lake, about 2miles upstream from the dam on the South Dakota side, inside the park itself. The course has some challenging par 4's, a couple par 5's & par 3's, and crosses multiple different heights winding through the bluffs, through the cottonwoods & pines, and under the watchful gazes of a half a dozen or more eagles squawking their reviews. The scenery of the lake & bluffs backdrop is stunning, but the trees keep the onshore breeze to a minimum so you're not fighting that the whole course.

Was Juhnke just overlooked or she just felt really connected to USD? Goodness...she's a player. Sorry for the late response. Your registration here is quite the process! Anyway, we are thrilled with our season so far, and feel especially fortunate to have recruited a player like Juhnke (pronounced Jun-kee)! Here is an article from a local paper that sheds some light on her decision to go to USD: (link)from the article: I'm not much of an XnOs guy with volleyball, but I do look at stats. I think what really stands out about Juhnke is her power and versatility. I believe that's what's known as a "6-rotation" type player? Her front-row attacks are powerful, but her back row attacks seem to have even more effect (momentum?). Also she is #2 on the team in digs/set (behind the reigning DPOY) , and #4 in blocks/set (behind 3 of the best MB in conference). Just an outstanding freshman player with a high ceiling and good work ethic. Her future is bright.

So, people have been flocking to Dubrovnik, Croatia because Game of Thrones was filmed there. Ditto Chernobyl in Russia because of the miniseries of the same name, but no one flocks to South Dakota despite Deadwood? Personally, I think that Dances with Wolves is probably a more apt comparison to Fargo. Both won multiple academy awards. DWW is a bit older (1990), so the tourism effects have worn off a bit, but there definitely was a boost for a few years in what was already a tourism hot spot (Mt. Rushmore, Black Hills, Deadwood, Badlands). Western South Dakota has some inherent limitations on population (isolation, few industries, jobs, etc.), so the effects were probably muted somewhat, but that's just fine for the folks living out there in God's country.

NU is scared of playing SDU. There is that whole revenge factor...Sammie against Lexi/Madi As well as the contrast to that... Jazz causing those South Dakota people to root for both teams as well as Sammie and Jazz playing across court from one another again and the reminiscing that will inspire. I think you might be thinking of Anezka Szabo, the Huskers' other lefty, rather than Jazz? Szabo is from Sioux Falls, just like Sami.

I've been to the park many times, but wasn't aware of the disc course. And along the same lines, I've been told that the golf courses along the Missouri in that area are just as beautiful. There is Dakota Dunes west of Sioux City, The Bluffs in Vermillion, SD, Lakeview in Crofton, NE and a nice 9-hole in Springfield, SD. Probably even more along the Niobrara just west of Springfield. I'm not a golfer, but I do know the area around the river is very scenic and naturalistic along that stretch.

Agreed! Almost got engaged here but decided on somewhere else. Without looking it up, I wonder how many people know what city USD is in in South Dakota. Vermillion. It's almost in Iowa and Nebraska. I think this is the key to understanding why women's volleyball and women's basketball have been successful at USD in Vermillion. Besides the fact that we have had some excellent coaches for those teams, we are in a great geographic position to recruit Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota. Occasionally Colorado and Wisconsin. As I'm sure many of you on this board are aware, there is a great deal of Volleyball and WBB talent available to recruit from this region. Especially from the MSP, Omaha/CB and Des Moines metros. Hopefully we can continue to be one of the great mid-major programs you see in the Nebraska-adjacent region (like Creighton, Omaha, Colorado State, Denver, Kansas/KSU, UMKC, UNI, etc.) Of course, we have some home-grown talent in the Dakotas, too. Often overlooked, under-recruited or kids that would just rather play close to home. I think there is much more emphasis on, and coaching expertise in WBB here than VB, but don't underestimate the power of having a prominent D1 program locally affecting youth interest in the sport. I think that's part of the VB culture in Nebraska. JMO

Besides Sami Slaughter, who Husker fans will be familiar with, we currently have three starters from Nebraska. Four if you include Sergeant Bluffs, IA
Madison Jurgens, starting setter - Odell, NE Elizabeth Loschen, starting OH - Omaha, NE (Marian HS) Maddie Wiedenfeld, starting MB - Omaha, NE (Marian HS) Madison Harms, starting MB - Sergeant Bluffs, IA
so not too surprising there was a big crowd at the USD/Omaha match last Friday.

One more thing: I guess I'd agree with those saying that Minnesota, Creighton or Nebraska are the most likely, or even the only regionals we would end up at. We were told that last year as well when we had the program-first tournament bid. It's kind-of a double-edged sword. Those are extremely difficult programs to get an upset win over in this sport, obviously.
On the plus side, we were able to get a good number of fans to travel to Creighton last year. There are also a lot of USD alumni living in Omaha and Minneapolis to draw from, as well as players' families and friends. That's probably a factor for crowd size in all of the regional matches, putting aside the savings for the NCAA.
I hope our RPI puts us in the running for an at-large. Denver or Omaha could certainly have a chance at an upset in the Summit League tourney. Those programs seem to be peaking right now (along with USD). If the VB NCAA is anything like the WBB NCAA, we would be right on the bubble as a mid-major in the 35-40 range.
