I really don't see universities cutting athletics due to dropping enrollment. Many universities (even some at the D1 level) use athletics to help drive enrollment. SC State has about 300 athletes. Dropping athletics would mean shutting down the university. If they don't cut athletics, they have cut something else. If they cut academics, then they can't pretend to be in the university business. I don't know, lack of academics seems to work okay for the SEC....

I think they'll just close the schools. If you look at Notre Dame de Namur, yeah they're cutting athletics, but they also "do not plan to enroll any new students this summer or fall and is building out transfer options for current students unable to finish their degrees by the end of spring 2021." That's closing the university. Wheeling Jesuit has been very open about their struggles, but they too haven't shut down athletics. Dropping to D3 could be a path that makes more sense though.

I don't know, lack of academics seems to work okay for the SEC.... Steve Spurrier's joke lives on... On a fire at an Auburn library that destroyed 20 books: "The real tragedy was that 15 hadn't been colored yet." On the other hand UNC had an entire department perpetuate a fraud for about 30 years and people still want to bang on the SEC because they are public schools and the ACC has a lot of private schools.

The best thing when Texas Tech and Missouri left the Big 12 was it raised the average ACT score of both conferences. Vbnerd: I couldn't figure out how to work a Spurrier joke in...not even one about Free Shoes.

Let's play match game. SEC versus ACC.
Here are some top academic schools in the ACC.
Duke. Great reputation as an academic institution. Duke Medical school is world renown. Can be spoken in the same breath as Stanford, Harvard, and other Ivies.
Notre Dame and UNC. Not on the same level as a Duke, but well regarded, especially for students of the Catholic faith.
Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. Top tier one research institutions for engineering and sciences. Very well respected amongst engineers and STEM professionals.
UVA. The university created by Thomas Jefferson. Very unique in its undergraduate educational structure. Incredibly selective.
NC State, very well regarded school when it comes to engineering. I don't know abut anyone else.
The rest of the ACC I can not speak for.
So match up the SEC schools with their ACC counter part.

Are they? Rumor is they are under 900 students on campus and may not have athletics because they can’t afford it anymore. Again 100% rumor I really don't see universities cutting athletics due to dropping enrollment. Many universities (even some at the D1 level) use athletics to help drive enrollment. SC State has about 300 athletes. Dropping athletics would mean shutting down the university. We know what happened with the African American Studies department for a 10-15 year period but athletes at UNC will tell you that it started long before that, and it wasn't just African American Studies. Much like Emory, who lied about their incoming students GPA and SAT scores to ratings publications, UNC's academic reputation has not been earned. UF and Vanderbilt are obviously great schools. The SEC money hasn't JUST helped their athletic departments and I'm sure even Steve Spurrier would admit that Auburn's students have gotten much better at coloring!

They did cheat, but how far does that drop them in your eyes as far the parts of the university that was not affected by the cheating? Does that drop them to the level of University of Phoenix? So, does Vanderbilt qualify in the same level as Duke? I would put them slightly above Notre Dame. Florida is OK. I would put them slightly above Virginia/Virginia Tech combined. Keep going.

That article is from 2015 As Was noted in my post. My point was that they’ve done that very thing before so it’s not unheard of. Thank you for reading.

A+M/Tech--it's like participation trophies for being behind Texas.
