Demographic change is real. It's my understanding that California is being diminished as a recruiting hotbed in almost every sport. Almost 10 million people have left California since 2010, mostly but not completely replaced by millions of people moving in. However, the people leaving are families with kids, and the people coming are single adults. Those families are the current and future recruits. They're not in California anymore. LOL No. Talk to people that cover recruiting in other sports.

This roster has me humming tunes from The Music Man. I can’t even help it.

Poor Abby Vander Wal, glad Taylor made it on the team thought. Heavy Nebraska bias lol Meh, I don't see "bias" towards those Nebraska players. If anything, if there is bias it's for Texas. I can't imagine anyone who actually watches volleyball would tell you that Taylor Harvey is among the best U21 middles right now.

She might not be as physical but her vertical and quickness isn’t far away

I promise you this is significantly less important to the staff than blocking and hitting. By a lot

Well, if middles were ever substantively judged by how good of a passer they are, your opinion of Harvey compared to Jackson and Favor is good to know. It wouldn't surprise me that Harvey passes better than Jackson or Favor, considering Harvey has played a lot of OH in her prep days. I'll make sure to take note of that for the handful of receptions these middles will see.

Harvey was on the U21 roster last year so it’s not a stretch at all for her to be picked this year. Also I have watched volleyball before and she’s absolutely in the same category as the other middles hence why she made the team. You can definitely argue that you think Andrew should’ve made it instead, for example, but they are comparable.

But there are those on this forum that somehow give these teams a ton of weight about who the "best" players are. "(insert player) made the USAV youth/junior traveling team, they must be the best" is a sentiment that gets peddled around volleytalk a lot. I would surely agree that Harvey is among the top middle prospects in the 2025 class, but it's absolutely ridiculous to say that she's the best U21 middle right now. She isn't even the best u21 middle for Texas' current pipeline, let alone the country. There are all sorts of reasons of why certain players make these rosters while others don't (or even get invited in the first place)....being the best isn't always the reason.

Winning NORCECAs is a given no matter who we send at this point thanks to the junior sports industrial complex. Investing in players with high upside makes sense.
