Texas is notoriously weak passing - she will most likely get to start for a National contender (if there is a tourney). Good for her!

Guess we are not going to be getting a transfer DS.

She didn't go to UT to play volleyball. Elliott made the approach. It's zero reflection on Illinois. Anyone upset by this is just looking to be upset. She's a great kid, did everything she could for Illinois and now has another opportunity to continue to play the game. Rooting for her. In some ways it is karma for snagging Bruna out from under Texas. She spent her initial recruiting time in Austin and for whatever reason Elliott was slow to pull the trigger on offering her.

I hadn't noticed that Gregus and Holzman appear to be practicing some serve receive and back row defense in these photos. It'd be cool if six rotations are in play for these two. Looking forward to seeing these gals play, whenever that ends up happening. Hope the rest of you Illini faithful are doing well and staying safe.

Hey, maybe if they play in the spring they'll allow some spectators in Huff Hall!? That would be rad- and some incentive for C-U to redouble our efforts to mask up and social distance. We can dare to dream!

If this was a normal season, I think that Illinois has a less than ideal roster heading into the season. Reminds me a bit of the 2012 team that was weak in serve receive and back row play and did not qualify for the NCAA tournament. This year’s roster is also short on experience and heavily skewed toward freshman and sophomores.
Not a normal season though. The last thing I would want this year during a pandemic would be to have a talented, experienced team with the potential to make a run at a Final Four. Too much of a chance for disappointment including total loss of the season.
Maybe the roster we have for this year is ideal as possible given the circumstances. A lot of young players with something to prove and room for improvement. If there is a spring season , that might offer a good chance for improvement with minimal losses heading into next year. A lot of young players can improve by just getting stronger. One of the things I was curious about this year was if Riley Hinton would show up with any sign of having deltoid muscles. She seemed to have potential but appeared overmatched physically for the Big Ten as a freshman.
I feel bad for the seniors but they have a Final Four to reflect upon in the years to come. Hopefully they have used their academic time at Illinois to have a career to look forward to. Remember the old Bruce Springsteen song, "Glory Days". They will have a verse of their own for their athletic accomplishments as they sit around drinking beers in years future. Hopefully more than old volleyball exploits to talk about though.
I have read the comments about Morgan O’Brien. The goal for a young person heading off to college is to find some direction in life and to get a degree to help propel them forward. And based on what I have read, that is what she did. When I was an undergrad, the conventional wisdom was that if someone wanted to get a graduate degree it was a good idea to go elsewhere for grad school. Especially if you could get into a good grad school. And Texas is a good school. To me it looks to be a story of a young person that keeps putting one foot in front of the other and making progress. When a pandemic hits she put herself in a position to keep moving forward. To me, this looks to be a success story for Morgan O’Brien and Illinois volleyball. I do not see anything negative. What would have been a better or more logical path to follow?

What happened to Bruna this year? Wasn’t she supposed to be a starter this year, or did she get beat out?

What happened to Bruna this year? Wasn’t she supposed to be a starter this year, or did she get beat out? I don't think there was a widespread expectation that Bruna was going to start this year. Jacqueline Quade and Beth Prince were the incumbents on the left pin and Megan Cooney on the right, all starters returning from a Final Four team. Bruna's season was very much impacted by injuries, both hers and those of her teammates. She was unavailable the first two games of the season against Tennessee and finally drew into the lineup in the fourth game, against Colorado. Beth Prince got injured, I think in that Colorado game and was out for a while. Bruna played in eight consecutive matches, then got injured and wasn't available for the next eight matches. She was back available from the home game against Michigan but didn't see the court for the rest of the season. By the time Bruna got healthy again, Mica Allison had established herself as a viable opposite and Cooney was continuing to develop as the second OH. Prince got healthy enough to draw into the lineup at times toward the tail-end of the season and was higher up on the depth chart than Bruna. With Quade and Prince graduating and only Cooney and Allison returning as the other pins who saw the court last year, there's opportunity this season for Bruna to compete for playing time with our freshman pins and Emily Hollowell. Her experience playing six rotations over in Europe could give her a leg up slotting into that vacancy left by Quade's departure. We're all looking forward to seeing how it all shakes out, if and when the season happens!
