Interesting to see Rose use a middle follow offense in 2019. I thought it presented some issues for Blossom. Any thoughts on whether he'll stick with it in 2020? There are some more options on the OH this year which I believe will open up what was done last year. Squad gets a little taller this year to help upfront as well as a little more fire power to help JP. Passing will be key this year and any year. There has to be some significant improvement there from last year. Hopefully a bigger block will help with their upgraded size. “Without an offensive line you can’t run or pass the ball - Lombardi”

When passing 2, your passers line up wide and move in as the ball is served. That, combined with the middle follow, made the edges of the court really crowded in certain rotations and forced Blossom to try and break in much more than if they were running a conventional system. Opponents definitely picked up on the vulnerabilities, as referenced by the passing stats when sorted by rotation. The passing stats for Penn State were actually very interesting in terms of what they wanted to do, I thought.

Most system choices bring with them strengths and weaknesses both specific to the system and relative to the personnel. PSU 2019 choices were mostly about maximizing Parker's attacking role and adding flexibility in the use of the middles. These decisions are made fresh every year just like at any serious program. How this choice impacted Blossom (and anything else) was evaluated in comparison with other options, just as at any serious program.

Agree, although the MF is typically a sign that your middles are more comfortable running 1/A/gap than a slide (which I think PSU only ran from Ro-5 this year - although I could be wrong on that), so I'd argue it was about reducing 'flexibility' of the middles and playing to their strengths while also maximising Parker hitting the D. The interesting thing, to me, was that they started the season passing 3 and had to switch to passing 2 the majority of the year when Parker struggled (I think the Pitt match was a game changer). The combination of passing 2 and the middle follow definitely impacted Blossom, and overall PSU's passing grade was way down from 2018 but, like you said, Rose clearly felt it was the best option they had. With the personnel changes, I'm not sure that he'll make the same choices in 2020.

If Penn State finds the passing, they will be very good & could win the Big10 I feel like.

Granted on paper, 4th in the B1G looks right for them. Hoping team chemistry and having an answer for the loss of KW will allow them to exceed expectations.
