Hopefully the SEC will not cancel the fall without providing their athletes with a plan for the spring! Sure, that spring plan could also be cancelled or altered but to flat out cancel the fall seasons without even a shred of evidence that a spring alternative has even been worked on is BUSH LEAGUE! The SEC values their athletes, coaches and staffs too much to just leave them in total limbo. This has not only been a PR nightmare for the pac/bg10 but imho it’s totally unprofessional! What the hell have they been doing while waiting around to cancel their fall sports? Why not wait another week and get your sh-t together and announce a spring game plan (yes it can be altered)? Just leaving everyone to speculate about the possibility of maybe, kinda, sorta playing in the spring is a big fail. The PAC/BG10 conferences (AD’s, Pres, & conf office) have had 4 solid months to have this plan in place. I’ll give the Univ Presidents a pass as they have other very important pandemic responsibilities but the conference offices and AD’s owed their athletes/staffs better. SEC/ACC/Big12 might end up following the same path but hopefully they are doing their due diligence and spring planning so they don’t just blindside their athletes and staffs! I've checked in with players and coaches in the Big 12 and I haven't spoken to a single person who wants to play in the fall. They either want to play in the spring (with everyone else) for a championship, or just take the waiver and wait til 2021. I get that fans aren't in favor of that option, but asking players to burn a year of eligibility for a shortened (and risky) conference-only competition - solely because administrators don't like the "optics" of playing football on its own, isn't in the interests of the players or the program.

Agree. Most in the conferences still standing feel that way too. But why not have a plan...why leave everything to speculation. Announce that here is our plan to play spring, the schedule, etc. I know they can’t guarantee that the NCAA will have a tourney but they can at least have a gameplan that is subject to change. Right now they have nothing ... according to wisc AD they have less than nothing as far as the spring is concerned. Unacceptable

Unacceptable There's no plan because, at this moment, there's no point in making one. They'd only be going off the data they have now and that data is indicating that the risk level is significant enough for most of D1 to cancel. You'd just be making a plan for the sake of "having a plan". Coaches that I've spoken to want (in no particular order) clarification on eligibility (that proposal just needs to be affirmed on 8/21), NCAA fall practice limitations, scholarship issues and institutional guidance on what they can do in fall - from a health perspective. That's basically the message I'm hearing, both from those who've already had their fall competition cancelled and those who still haven't. I've not heard from a single coach who has said "We want to play in the fall, just because!". If volleyball coaches were given the option to go to spring now, I think you'd see every SEC coach take it.

You can have a plan and you can have all those questions answered before you announce “fall is done” and you leave everyone guessing just like you are. I’ve talked to coaches, players and administrators as well and while they echo your statements regarding a reduced fall schedule they also echo mine that the Big10 totally failed in their urgency to try and muscle the other major football conferences. By doing so they created a huge information void. That has led their athletes, fans, & parents scratching their heads! I’m not disagreeing with you on anything other than the Big10’s preparation. Barry Alvarez has said they have done nothing regarding playing football (more or less VB) in the spring. The SEC would not do that! I’ve heard that directly out of their mouths and I for one, appreciate that versus the “will get back to you” plan! Organizations all over the world have made pandemic plans based off the current science, info and numbers. These plans many times stretch into the future, like spring! You can have a plan ready to go for the spring based off of the best current science, info and numbers. It’s done by professional organizations all over the world.

But most of the answers to the questions I posted come from the NCAA, not the SEC. I'm not here to argue about the B10. Even the SEC medical advisory board has said that they aren't evaluating the situation like the B10 did. Comments from a member of that panel today acknowledged that they aren't saying "it's safe to play in the fall" - they're simply not concluding (yet) that it is UNSAFE to play in the fall, as other conferences have. They're not answering that question affirmatively, they're just not answering it yet. That aside, however, my point is simply this; the consensus among volleyball coaches in those conferences still playing is "let us move to spring" because they don't like the proposed spring plan. They're not saying (as you did) 'we need to see a detailed plan in order to move to spring'. Simply 'move to spring'. If that ultimately means no season, c'est la vie. But there is no enthusiasm for a shortened, fall, conference only season during this pandemic, regardless of what happens in spring or beyond.

Did any of those conversation with Big 12/SEC/ACC coaches occur after the D1 Council proposed that it won’t count as a season of competition if you play 14 or fewer matches? I totally understand having no desire to play a shortened season with no championship and losing eligibility. But if you can play matches “for free”, do they still want to sit out? This would certainly also include assurance that if a spring championship is scheduled, they wouldn’t be frozen out.

The current fall schedules don't start for 5 weeks. Almost no chance anyone plays a single match this fall, but every coach still with a fall schedule is going to practice full time as if they are. They are getting extra practice and conditioning and I don't see how the NCAA could possibly penalize them prior to scheduling a spring championship and issuing fall practice rules. It looks like a win-win for the six remaining conferences right now.

This would certainly also include assurance that if a spring championship is scheduled, they wouldn’t be frozen out. They aren't "for free" though. You're still playing matches when other schools will be practicing and getting better. Whether it's 8 hours in fall or winter, you'll still get less practice time than those who aren't playing. You're still doing it in the middle of a pandemic, under restrictions and protocols which could see you playing with your best players if they test positive. And say you use up 10 of your 14 games in the fall, then spring gets cancelled 8 games in (and you've been playing OOC), your players all just lost a year of eligibility without getting to compete for a championship (which gets cancelled) while every other conference gets a redshirt... And for what? What's the advantage of playing in fall? Winning a shortened conference championship? This isn't my opinion. I haven't heard a single coach say "Yes, we're ready and willing to play".

That’s not the point! I and most agree that fall sports looks unlikely. The point is that the big10 rushes the decision with no spring plan or any plan, just so that they could upstage and try and bully the other P5 conferences. It didn’t work. And my second point was that if and when the SEC does cancel fall sports that they do it professionally with a plan for their athletes, coaches and staff.
I mean 2 big10 ADs have come out saying that they aren’t even sure there was a vote. What a sh-Tshow!

If the ADs don't know what happened, they could presumably pick up a phone and ask. If presidents start saying that they don't know if a vote took place, that's a bigger issue.

So we have any idea when we may see schedules? Or when technically allowed to play? I'm not sure it's ever been updated since the original delay through the end of Aug.

It seems that the SEC has yet to announce any potential changes to its scheduling with some schedules still listed on schools websites. ACC, AAC, and Sun Belt all have divisions with back-to-back matches it seems. Big 12 I think is still playing a full round robin but with back to back matches at one location.

Maybe they'll play the season in phases...
