LOL. Except for getting it wrong, you are in the ballpark. I was looking at the artist's signature and taking that a different direction...to UF. Interesting ... but not my intent at all. The clue is the animal.

Question for SEC fans, or anyone else dropping by - Who's the best setter in the conference? I ask this cause Madden54 started up a thread titled - Lilley or Hilley. Now Madden54 did not hide the fact that part of the equation was the humorous rhyming of the names. Humor is fun by me, but if one of these players were just mediocre the comparison would fall flat. The thread started to get to a point where I felt people were comparing the two as if they were the best in the country. It got me thinking that while Lilley is one the best... Is she the best in the SEC? As overall package I would probably give her the nod, but if we were just talking straight up setting duties I would give the nod to Missouri's Fuentes, and not because I'm being a homer.
Anyone got an opinion, Fuentes or Lilley? Maybe Donovan or Monserez? Or maybe someone else who is doing great with much much less talent around her? I feel like Lilley gets the notoriety and attention, it's warranted, but are others not getting the credit they deserve... Namely Fuentes for me. It's the off-season, so I guess I'm craving some competition.

In my view, Lilley is the best by a good bit. I'm not sure there is any significant weakness in her game, and her setting is fantastic. She may suffer a bit by the relatively straightforward offense that KY runs, in that she misses opportunities for "flash," but she spreads the ball around with accuracy and tempo from all over the court, and she is a + defender and solid blocker.
I like Fuentes as a deliverer of the ball, though I don't think she's as smooth as Lilley. Also (and I know you are focusing just on setting), Fuentes is not all that great on defense and is a bit of a liability on the block.
Donovan is good, but not anything amazing, imo. Monserez is adequate but not in the same category, imo. (I think average setting is one of the things holding Florida back from truly elite status lately, tbh.)
I like Rose at LSU, but she is tiny (with huge hops) and a freshman. I'll be interested to see what she can develop into. Conner at TAMU is much improved, but I still don't think she's all that great at delivering sets. Her ability to attack the second ball is what makes her so tough to play against.

This is why you ask the experts like, vbshrink.
I wouldn't argue with Lilley being better all-around, so she would be the obvious and most valuable choice for most people. Head and shoulders better than everybody in the conference... Fuentes is shorter and not the blocker that Lilley is, for sure. My argument for Fuentes is that she is still putting up fantastic numbers, better than Lilley, in spite of being on a team that is terrible defensively (last in the SEC). She is hard-pressed a lot of the time to deliver a decent set cause she's constantly chasing balls. I can't but help but wonder just how better can she be if she had the passing that Lilley gets. I personally think it's really telling when a setter is backed by that bad of a defense and still manages to be #5 in the nation for assists-per-set and the team is #4 in kill efficiency.
You also allude to the "straightforward offense" of UK and I think this is an area where Fuentes has a little separation. I think she's able to switch gears constantly and set up quite a variety of offensive weapons with their own individual tempos and styles. From the tiny jumping firecracker Meneh, to the slide of Omazic, to the lumbering takeoff of DeBerg, she manages all of that really well. The only times that I personally see where she doesn't deliver smoothly is when she's running down a shanked pass, which is more often than not. It's a testament to her that she doesn't draw more double contact calls.

I am not just going to sit by and let you call me an expert! ;-) Just a dude with opinions.
You make some good points about Fuentes, though. Good post.

I think Fuentes is great at delivering balls but I’m I’ve watched almost every Missouri game and her defense and her block are very poor. I also wish she would attack on two more. She has great hands though. I do think Lilley is the better player though

Her attacking numbers would be much better had the passing itself been better. I keep hammering away at the defense but I think we've seen a talented offensive team only run at 75-80% peak efficiency most of the time over the past two seasons.

From my expert source in the field it’s Lilley and then everybody else.

Pray for Florida fans. Just saw on Richkern that Sophie Fischer is now taking her talents to UK. If UK doesn't have the #1 2020 class in the country then it will be the #2 class. Fischer should push them past Minnesota.

Rest of the SEC, minus Florida, need to step up their recruiting game.
